Rory Playing Without a Hat??

Obviously I don't care what Rory plays with, I'm just surprised he was cool playing without a hat.  I'd almost feel naked on the course without one.  I'm sure I'd be fine, I just keep one in my car at all times just in case.  I know a lot of great golfers are very particular about their routines.  My question is does anyone play without a hat, and would it be weird to play without one if you do.

I read that it is due to him having a tiny head. He always needs to have custome fit hats apparently. Not sure why someone couldn't do that on time for the event, or why he couldn't use a previous one.

 

I actually feel weird playing with a hat. I don't feel like my face or my head suits it. On the other hand, playing in very hot weather and sweating a lot isn't a good look either. Maybe just need to find the right style.

I assumed it was because Rory didn't want to wear the Irish colors. The hat size thing is not believable to me.  Since he's from N. Ireland not sure how he was playing for S. Ireland but he doesn't like to have to choose between North and South and I don't blame him. A lot of sensitivities there better left unprovoked.

There are not "North and South" Irish Olympic teams, there is only Ireland. Rory also had the option of playing for UK since he is from Northern Ireland; that was the only choice he had to make.

I've played without one before. Usually it's when I sneak in 9 holes after work and forget to grab a hat from the house before I leave that morning. 

 

I don't necessarily feel "naked" without one, but I definitely prefer to have one on. I've never been able to play in sunglasses so I need a hat to keep the sun out of my eyes.

He's played without a hat in Ryder Cup before.  I would guess he's probably not a big hat guy personally and only wears them for sponsorship/endorsement purposes.  Given that there are no implications for that come Ryder Cup/Olympics he opts to not wear one.  The only two names I am aware of that currently don't wear hats at professional tour stops would be Robert Rock (European Tour) and Ollie Schneiderjans (Korn Ferry/PGA).

I play without one occasionally.  I would prefer to not wear one actually but as I keep [what is left of] my hair very short (no guard on the wahl trimmer) I need one to keep my head from burning.  I have gone to a wide brim hat to stop the need for sunscreen on my head and face.  I hate that stuff with a passion.  But my dad is heading to the dermatologist every 6 months or so having spots cut off of him so that alternative is not fun either.

 

If I played somewhere where the UV index wasn't near tropical and had a head full of hair a la Robert Rock, I wouldn't wear a hat.

Pretty much never played with one unless it was raining, then started wearing them in my 30s off and on and just about 100% the last 15 years.  I'll play without one rarely, actually prefer it, but it's stupid to play without one according to my dermatologist and I try not to be stupid and also follow the advice of my health professionals.

I don't buy the "small head" comment.  The Olympics should have been able to find something to fit properly.  If not just have Nike make him a couple with no logo.  I noticed a couple times on Sunday he was squinting looking into the sun - particularly during the playoff.  Not good.

Maybe they didn't have time to make him a custom sized hat because he took so long to decide whether to play for Ireland or UK (or to play at all).

I wear a hat but I regularly take it on and off. I’d have no problem playing without one full time. I walk and play 2-3 days a week. I try to avoid the golfers hat tan.
