Did the topic ever come up on the trip how many MG3 heads they have?  Thinking most OEM's likely use a 50* head to cover/bend +/- 2*.  Meaning the 50* would cover 48-52* with different stamping.

The PW is 46 this year as opposed to 48 in the MG2 and it is a distinctively different head, but still flows in the gw perfectly.

The thought process behind this years line up was that with iron sets becoming as strong lofted as they are the 48* didn't see a great deal of use.  With that said they dropped the 48* and felt that could cover that gap with a stronger 46 if needed.  They were taking loft off the 48* in most builds and it was decreasing bounce and changing offset.  The heads for this year are 46*, 50*, 52*, 54*, 56*, 58*, 60*.

Not me. In fact I plan on donating my new Hogan Eq II TX grind wedges to someone in need sometime in the next few weeks.

Twofold for me. The bounce that Greg fit me into is much better suited to my delivery both on longer shots and around the green. I always thought that I needed more bounce and that just isn't the case due to my delivery.

We got to hang with Wade and talk shop with one of the best builders around, get some awesome pics and see a couple things we couldn’t take pictures of or talk about.  Not trying to be that guy. But that’s exactly what they told us about a few things.

LOL. No sweat, man. That's how they played it with us as well. Lots of shop talk, and plenty of "no pictures" ops.

Talking with Wade seems like it would be a trip. I love watching those Tour Truck Tuesday videos.

A while back in the thread I promised that I'd get more verbose about what I was playing in the past (and why) and how this experience may alter that. This is going to be long so I apologize in advance for that but there really is no other way to convey the information. Prior to leaving for the trip I posed the following question to the members of the group;

When purchasing wedges, what features do you look for and why? Do certain aspects vary depending on the specific wedge?

My reason for asking this was 2-fold. I was genuinely curious about the answers and how they'd compare with my personal experiences but primarily I was interested in how our approaches may have been incorrect and/or would change moving forward. My initial response was long enough so I won't post it verbatim but, mainly for your reference, here it is. I'll bold the important parts. 😉

Prior to going on this fitting I was playing with a few different configurations, mainly because I didn't feel that I needed a 60' wedge in my bag. My setup was as follows; 48/52/56/60 and I'd been experimenting with a 48/53/58 configuration over the past couple of years which is what I went into the fitting with in my bag. I mention this because the first question that Greg asked me was, "What is your highest lofted wedge and why?" I responded with a simple, "58 degrees. Why? I guess because there aren't really any shots where I feel like I need more loft, I can always open the blade."  At that point he asked me how I go about getting more effective loft on my 58' and how I approach shots where a 64' wedge would be advantageous. After some demonstrations with my current wedge Greg was satisfied and it turned out that TrackMan verified my belief, I really don't need more than 58' as my highest lofted wedge.

Greg fits from your highest loft wedge "down" so we started with my 58 and moved from the aforementioned speciality shots to some "stock" shots to various pins. My initial tendency became obviously apparent pretty quick when I totally flubbed one of my first shots. It was embarrassing but I'm still glad that Greg got to see it. I explained to Greg that he got to see the miss that I'm most fearful of, the one that quite literally forces me to practice with my wedges as much as I do. If I'm just a little fat or my hands get a little more ahead of the head than I intend, the sole grabs and I essentially lay the sod over the ball and flub one 15 yards. I told Greg that what I'd love to get out of the fitting is to end up with a wedge that will get into the turf and pop right out without effort, something that won't grab and flip and, most importantly, something that will give me a little margin for error. I explained to Greg that is why I always gravitate toward higher bounce wedges, they're supposed to be forgiving when you don't enter the turf exactly as you intend.

Having seen enough Greg had me put down my Hogan Eq II and handed me an MG3. This one was better but after a few shots Greg wasn't happy so he exchanged it with another club. Like a good "student" I did not look at the sole of either club, I did not want any preconceived notions going in. One shot in with the second wedge and Greg just smirked, "That's the one." I looked back, "You think?" and hit a few more shots. Then I tried to throw a few "faults" at it. I tossed it into the dirt early, tried to catch one a hair thin, hands leading, casting, etc. Regardless of what I did the sole glided right through and took everything I thew at it. Despite the rain, spin numbers were acceptable as well and TrackMan confirmed my typical shallow angle of attack. I finally flipped the wedge over and to my amazement read, "58 LB-08". Say what?!?!?! It was raining pretty good at this point so unlike the others I didn't spend any time at the practice green or in the bunkers. I asked Greg how important that would be and he said that time was more about personal validation than fitting, at least in my case. He'd seen all the shots that he'd needed to see to be extremely confident that the LB was my wedge of choice without a doubt. The first wedge that I'd tried was the SB and there was an obvious difference between how the 2 went through the turf.

Before packing up and being satisfied with a low bounce wedge Greg and I talked over the sole quite a bit. I told him how I liked to use the bounce and shared my concerns about moving to something so drastically different, he had me try a few specific shots and he was right, with the camber, relief and overall shape in the sole there wasn't a shot that I was having any issues with. Not on the flat range anyway. Moving from a long history of high bounce options, I'm very confident that longer rough isn't going to be an issue either. For me, "grabby" is bad and a lower bounce option is certainly going to be less "grabby."

The discussion then moved on to how we want to move through the wedges and into the rest of bag. Why did I show up with 48/53/58 and what did I want to move forward with? This was a messy answer because my 48' PW was really based on my old 48/52/56/60 configuration. I explained that I essentially gap my irons based on my full swing distance with my 52 and, at the moment, I had a larger than ideal gap in the 48/53/58 configuration and haven't resolved how, exactly, to remedy the situation. Greg's suggestion was simple and, I think, somewhat biased since he's pretty proud of his new 46' offering. He suggested that I go 46/50/54/58. What a minute, I've played my PW at 48-50' for as long as I can remember! "How is this any different?" Greg asked while holding up a 50' MG3. Good point, it'll close my gap and give me more versatility at the bottom of my bag. As I explained to Greg, I really don't use anything with less than 52' of loft around the greens since the soles on those clubs are generally nowhere near as versatile as I'd like, especially in my P730s (if there was one thing I could change about these irons, I'd add a little leading edge relief and some camber). This configuration w/the MG3s gives me significantly more options w/the lower lofted clubs.

As the pictures in the above posts reflect, I ended up taking Greg's suggestion and ordered 46/50/54/58 which should close up the gaps at the bottom of my bag quite nicely. As a result I'll drop the set PW that I typically carry and bend the P730s to give me the correct yardage gaps based on the MG3s. This should put the P730s pretty close to their stock configuration. If anything they'll be a little strong which, interestingly enough, will remove a touch of bounce. This could end up being a win-win. I expect my baby blades to end up right back to their stock lofts (my long irons always end up a touch strong since consistent 4' gaps always work better for me). I'll get them "close enough" to finish out the season and spend my off season getting everything dialed in on TrackMan.

What surprised me the most about this fitting is that I ended up better suited to low bounce wedges. Turns out my delivery is better suited to lower bounce clubs across the board. Maybe that's why I don't have issues hitting baby blade 1 and 2 irons that have negative bounce? I ended up with the satin wedges too. I totally expected to order the black ones since, in most cases, black clubs have a softer feel. In the case of the MG3 however, both finishes have that raw face but the hardness of the metal is actually softer on the satin clubs due to the heat treatment process that is used to give these clubs their black color. I hit them both side by side and sure enough, the satin ones do have a slightly softer feel, interesting. Another thing that was obvious on TrackMan is that I do benefit from some type of face treatment. Due to my shallow delivery, I don't generate a ton of spin so anything that enhances that is beneficial. Perhaps I have to rethink playing the TP5x instead of the TP5? Then again, as Greg observed I do use trajectory more than spin to control the ball into the green.

For the most part I was right in what I look for when I buy wedges. Sole relief and camber are absolutely something that I benefit from and take advantage of. I use the bounce of the club in various different ways on various shots too so having a grind that facilitates that really makes things easier for me. Progressive swing weights are beneficial to me as well. Where I was most incorrect however, and what has had undoubtably the most negative impact on my wedge game, is bounce. I always went with as much bounce as I could get as long as there was heel/toe relief. This turned out to be the exact opposite of what I really needed and I have feeling that will become very apparent the more I work with these. I also learned a TON from the time that I was able to spend with Greg. I have a lot more confidence that I'll make better choices when it comes time to replace the MG3s due to wear as a result. Which, as an amateur with very limited access to fitters of this caliber, just might be the greatest benefit of this experience.

I finally have these wedges in hand and hope that the MN weather holds off for me to put in some serious time with them before being forced back indoors. At the moment "life" has forced me away from the course (my youngest is back in the hospital at the moment) so I haven't spent any time with them yet. I'll be sure to post a full (lengthy, of course) review once I have a an opportunity to really put them through their paces.

Great write up buddy! Sorry to hear that your kid is back in the hospital.  I can’t wait to hear about these on the course.

Yep. Had always though an M or C type grind was best in my lob wedge but after hitting the SB there was a significant difference in turf interaction to the good with the Sb. Honestly had I not hit them back to back on grass I’d have never known but the SB enter and exited the turf much cleaner and quicker. I could almost feel my 58M SM8 dragging through the turf.

Interesting.   I have been looking for a TM fitter (not box store) as I want to find out what grind is best outside.  I have always chosen the one with heel and leading edge relief but often use the 60° out of the sand as well and so I’m conflicted on the missing bounce.  Good luck with yours.

I was in same boat always played M or C grinds on my lob but after reading through this forum decided to go SB as leading edge does sit lower and the 60/SB has been great. I ordered the 50 and 54. 50 is supposedly 8-10 week lead time tho…
