Cleveland Halo Xl irons... thoughts?

I’m amazed how they perform in tests. Spin numbers are so consistent. Watching Crossfield talk about these and seeing some other reviews too. I know some old school Champions tour players made serious cash playing similar stuff. These irons also seem to divide opinions too. It’s almost like they’re the modern day VAS . Interested to hear others thoughts about these....

Nothing new really, tier 2 OEMs (Cobra, Wilson, Cleveland) have been offering hybrid irons for many years now.

These have to be a really good option for a lot of slower swing speed players.  Even for moderate swing players I could see a combo set up in them to a 7 or 8.

Went to GG today to check out the XL Halo irons and the hybrids really piqued my interest. They feel good, have some off set. They carried a 3+ (length of a fairway in a hybrid), 4 and 5. I may need to re-think the configuration of this new set. The 7 wood look good too. I think this one will catch people's attention - if given a chance.

I have Launcher HB irons, they're just as long as any iron I've ever had but far more forgiving. My Halo hybrids replaced my fairway woods and same thing, just as long but much easier to hit and far more accurate. My only regret is that they didn't have these years ago.

I would love to try these with a bit heavier graphite shaft. Have always been a fan of rails on hybrids, and currently hybrids in general. I get a lot of spin on my 6H and 7H, imagine that these clubs would perform similarly for a lot less money than a hybrid.

The VAS were good clubs, but the funky look and purple color that worked for Rossignol on skis didn't make it with the far more conservative golfing demographic. That was concurrent with when Salomon took over Taylor Made, which would have faded into obscurity if Salomon had painted the TM drivers the same bright orange as their skis of that era. White was radical enough, and by the time they went to that they'd already established the brand.

It's interesting how this time, the Cleveland Hybrid irons are getting a lot of attention. They are not much different than the HB turbo irons. Going to demo day on Thursday, will report back.

I think the newer sole design is going to help out a lot of people.

I picked up the HB Turbos the end of last season so I don't foresee myself trading up just quite yet, especially because I've very happy with them.  I don't get out to play and practice as much as I did a few years back and these have really allowed me to shoot some fairly consistent scores in the low-mid 80s.  If I am having an off ball striking day with my old GI clubs I would be struggling to break 90.  I love that I can just step up and swing these without much thought and it's always going to give me a more than playable result.  I think the "It's only a SGI club for high handicaps or seniors" commentary is misleading.  Surely that is Cleveland's target audience for this hybrid iron set but I think anyone that doesn't consistently break 80 shouldn't just write them off without demoing.

I’m not gonna lie, all the reviews on these are seriously making me rethink my whole golf philosophy. I’m going in for a full bag fitting soon and was going to look at something like T100/200s or P770/790s for irons.

Now that I’ve seen the launch/spin/carry/etc numbers on these in some of the YT reviews as well as the T300s, I’m asking myself why not make the game as easy/fun as possible.

Mark said something really profound in his review. He said something along the lines of, “Almost all good amateurs can flight an iron shot lower when needed but very few can add launch when needed.” It made me think that if the launch numbers are marginally higher than optimal for me in a fitting, then why not go with them. When I get out on the course, the pressure of the round compounded with the odd lies will necessitate the extra launch generated by SGI irons.

My game is odd. On the good years when I can practice, my driver is scratch/+ in SG, and my short game and putting is in the same category. No matter what though, my approach game is always garbage and the main thing that holds me back. I’m excited to try these out and see what happens.

I get that. These are really appealing for the 4/5 iron spots and that ought to be true for better players too.

My philosophy is that I don’t want any club in my bag that intimidates me. I want tools I’m excited to use for specific jobs.

I am headed towards a purchase here. I'm not sure how many halo hybrids to add here. The halo hybrids go to a 6 hybrid. Maybe, just 3 or 3 & 4 hybrid and the rest xl halo hybrid irons?

I’m thinking I’ll go 4-SW in the stiff  graphite, all HALO XLs.

Right now I'm in the same boat. Swing is finally getting back in a groove after a long injury layoff. Driver is usually straight and typically hit 10+ fairways a round. Around the green I've been good historically, been working hard on the green and that is now pretty well-behaved. But GIR is typically low single digits. That makes it hard to break 80. I've migrated to more hybrids as I hit them well, and I hit my wedges well. I really just need something between 7H and GW that I can trust.

Myself and another player in my Sunday league game the HB Turbos and we are both single digit players. None of the higher handicaps play them and it’s a shame. I will definitely be picking up the 4-PW in steel when it comes out. I also play the previous generation 2 halo hybrid and love the rails. I don’t even carry any fairway woods. Too large of a dispersion pattern. That’s the secret sauce to these hybrid irons. If you miss, it’s a reasonable miss and you can still make par.

Yeah, I’ve really changed my philosophy lately. At this point I’d play pink fuzzy clubs if it made me better at the game. I know that’s not very “wrx” like of me. If I can stand over something at 190-230ish and have confidence in my own swing to do what I need but also have the confidence that my club will cover my flaws really puts me in a different headspace.

100%. My putter is the LAB broomstick for the same reason. Why make golf harder than it needs to be when you can make it a bit easier?

Hey i won't hate on them! For a higher hadicaper these clubs would be awesome! Mine as well make golf easier on yourself rather than fighting it.

You don't have to be a higher handicap player to appreciate being more accurate and having greater shot consistency. Once upon a time metal woods, oversize drivers and graphite shafts were relegated to being for high handicappers only. There's a not so fine line between being a traditionalist and being a Luddite.

Let us know how they are if you pick them up. Always played steel because I like them a bit heavier. Tempted though to try the stiff graphite shafts.

They are really light though - iirc 62g in stiff. That’s about 30g lighter than my current graphite iron shafts, not sure I could time that. But life is an experiment…

I started my Launcher HBs at 5 iron, mainly because I could never hit a 4 iron well. The Halo 4 iron is much closer to a hybrid than iron, it even has bulge and roll, so much so that I wouldn't be a bit concerned about it. That said, my Launcher HB hybrids blew away the Taylor Made M6 rescues I had before them, so I don't think you could go wrong either way.
