Does anyone know how Titleist get Cam Smith's wedges to look like this? They look a little different to the standard raw look, almost a bit darker and more gunmetal? They look more like a black head that has had the finish stripped, anyone else seeing that?

Cam Smith.jpeg

Theses appear to be the jet black version with the black finish stripped back a bit. You can tell from the all black paint fill. Soak the jet black heads In white vinegar for 30 minutes. Then scrub with a kitchen dish scrubber. It will give you this dull down gun metal finish.

So would this be the best way to get a matte look (other than raw)?

Thinking maybe I’ll get black and play them for a bit and when the faces get too worn do this to them. Any reason that wouldn’t work?

Cheers, so I ended up doing this to my black OG Milled Grind wedges. Soaked them in white vinegar for a couple of days then used 600 and 1200 grit sandpaper, they look like the Vokey on the post just above this. I love the way they look now and not much effort, I'm about 2 months and a few rounds in and they look exactly the same still. I would actually say I prefer the look over a standard raw wedge!

Does anyone have any updates on delivery times for preorders? Specifically left handed heads? Currently at 8 weeks

I’m currently at 9 weeks. Was quoted 6-8 when I ordered in Feb. My fitter called Titleist last week to inquire. They said the left handed raw heads were in but the holdup on my order are the kbs shafts. Told they would be in mid May. So much misinformation out there. No one can give an absolute date or make any promises. Just trying to stay patient and beat up my SM8’s some more. They have a little life left in them.

Thanks for the update. I ordered tour chrome with Tour Issue S400s. Maybe I'll have my club reach out for an update. I have new irons coming in and will be stuck with a bit of a gapping issue with my current wedges. No big deal short term but if it goes on too much longer I'll have to find a solution

Did you pull the heads before doing this?

I want to try this and if I can do it without pulling the heads all the better. Just not sure what a day or two in vinegar will do to the epoxy!

My RH raw SM9s shipped on Friday, and are set to arrive early via fedex tomorrow (4/20). Ordered on 2/20. Exactly 8 weeks. I chose to keep everything stock, including the shafts.

Nope, I did put sellotape around the ferrules though, just to be safe with a barrier of sorts but I filled the bucket with just enough vinegar so that it wasnt on the ferrules, well barely anyways. I would just do that, to be safe and not needing to pull the heads. So put the clubs in your bucket or tub 1st, then pour in the vinegar till its just the right level and make sure the clubs are secure and dont slip out of position.

After 1 night the clubs looked orange, they were glowing in the vinegar. I took them out and wiped off some of the finish with a normal sponge, then put them back in. After a full day they were nearly there but not quite - so left them another night and a bit. By that point they were ready, so I washed them and then went to work with the 600 grit, then finished with the 1200 grit to get that smooth finish. Bear in mind I have never used sandpaper in my life 🙂 but they turned out great! I would let them soak for at least a day or 2 with decent vinegar, then get to work on them. You may lose a bit of the paintfill - a couple of letters came off in the vinegar but most of it stayed on. I can't believe it didnt try this earlier, they look so good!

Got a hold of Titleist - anticipated build date is June 10, plus 5-7 business days for delivery. Ordered 02/23 and original quote was 4-10 weeks - this will put it to roughly 16.

Currently have 50/54/58 in SM6 (50.08F, 54.08M, 58.08M), and looking at SM9s to go with some new T100S (PW 44).

I'm leaning towards 48/52/58 as I rarely use my 54 on full shots, so think the 52 can bleed that gap.  The other point is the SM9 54 options seem limited?  I would like an M grind like my SM6 54.08 M, but all I can see that would suit me is a 54.14 F grind, which seems a lot of bounce.  Am I missing something?

Based on that, looking at 48.10F, 52.08F and 58.08M.  Any thoughts on the setup, and lack of 54 bounce and grind options?

Don't be scared of bounce, bounce is your friend!

That being said, if you want a little less I'm a big fan of the S grind (which has bounce of 10) for a 54 degree wedge. For me at least I never feel comfortable really opening/closing the face with anything other than my 58 degree so the only manipulation I do with a 54 is just how much I move my hands forward and back to show a little more or less loft to the ball that way depending on what kind of shot I'm trying to hit with it around the green. Sort of the ideal use case for the S grind then IMO.

I believe that the 54 M was one of, if not the worst selling grind/loft combos so it was removed and made available as a WedgeWorks option. Like @KParks said the S grind is a great choice. Although not as much as the M grind, it still allows for a decent deal of face manipulation .

@KParks @Yoshifan151 - good call on the S grind.  Messed around with that a little today and it is a great profile.  Think I'll settle on 48F, 54S and 60M.  I know 6 degrees is a lot, but until they let me carry 15 clubs thats it.  Also, I like the simplicity and work my current 54 and 58 in all scenarios.

Some thoughts on shaft.  I play my irons (T100S, AMT Tour White) + 1/2 inch.  For whatever reason, the stock length of the 48F Vokey is 0.25" longer than the T100S GW (which I have ordered).  I will add 0.25" to the Vokey wedges to maintain the setup I prefer.  In doing so, I can order the AMT Tour White S300, or stick to DG S200 shafts.  My understanding is flex is the same, but weight is a couple grams lighter and helps with spin.

I know most will say it makes no difference and I wouldn't be able to tell, but welcome thoughts.  I know its way into the details and I don't have Tigers feeling in my hands (handicap 4), but worth a brief moment for feedback.

It won't be that bad since it's way easier to do half or 3/4 shots with wedges to fill gaps compared to the top end of the bag. Glad you're a fan of the S grind suggestion!

Also just noticed that there are no more raw T-grinds available? I wonder if now that they're coming to retail if it will just be part of the normal SM9 Raw dropdown menu?
