Ping i59 review

HoganHO

Recommended Posts

Had a iron testing session at the weekend and told the fitter I had never hit a ping iron in my life but wanted to hit i59 to see what the fuss was about. I was blown away when I hit them -

1 - I was surprised how well I struck them based on a lot of reviews (9.8 index 72mph clubhead 7i)

2 - For me they went as long as 'modern loft' irons which was nice from a 34degree 7 iron

3 - They feel totally different to anything I have ever hit - used to hitting forged mizunos. Its like a totally different sound and feel.

The price is far too much for me sadly but if you have the funds they are amazing

If anyone is interested I did receive mine last week was only about a 10 day turnaround from ping on a new set.

They spin a bit more for me as well but not seeing much distance loss so far, flying a little higher. Like the feel and these are working much better than my I blade experiment and my limited run with the t100s.

You mentioned having JPX Tours in the bag previously, right @soap1984? How do the i59s compare in terms of forgiveness?

I have JPX 921 SEL in the bag right now but have hit the i59s and loved them. Just curious how they’ve gone for you.

Saw a set of i59 5-W with my exact specs (green dot +3/4”) and recoil f3 regular - and got lucky with a low bid on eBay (less than $700shipped).

I slapped them around for 27 holes Friday/Saturday struggling with distance control. Hit 13 greens Sunday playing white tees (6400yds) that were up. They make you work.  But I’m happy with the purchase.

Multiple threads on this one going….

these are really consistent irons…. Turn them over, hit them straight…. A little fade…. They hit their distance.

the spinsistency concept from ping is legit and I believe the reason these things are praised for such consistency.

they are misunderstood irons and are not going to be a fit for those trying to drop down from players distance irons or super forgiving irons … they are really for blade or compact CB players looking for the ultimate control with just that added touch of forgiveness that has not really been available in single block forged heads…

Youtube videos and players asking about how they compare to p790 …. They don’t…. Not even on the same continent of golf clubs… even the P770 is a poor comparison…. If you are playing the P7MC or MB successfully… then you should consider these…

if you are looking for forgiveness from hitting it all over the face…. Go i230…. Need distance help…. I525….

ping screwed the marketing on these awesome irons by making such a comparison to the i210 MOI….it led to expectations that were misaligned for the target golfer of this iron.

my point is, if you hit this iron with the right expectations… you will be impressed for what they are….

…. but ….. those i230 do seem to be crushing it for so many players…. So a ho’ gotta ho’…..

Long time iBlade user and I have been eying the i59"s for this upcoming season. Looking to go retro lofts too as I can't stand the strong loft trend. Love the idea of having a 36 deg 7 and 48 deg PW again.  Definitely going pre-owned though as these are steep. I'll just send them to Ping for adjustments.

It is such a tough call between the i230 and i59. So far the i230 is living up to what I expected in ease of hitting long irons, and the entire set is consistent. But man, the i59 is a sweet iron if you want a little more compact look. I was hitting the 8 iron on Sunday and just landing one after another in a small circle. They’re impressive.

I'm 18hc and currently playing Nike VR Pro Combo, I don't seem to get along with chunkier clubs.

I hit these a few times in a store and have been thinking about them. Any opinions on these vs a zx5/zx7 combo?

Do you think they are too much club for a mid/high hc?

You are going to have weaker lofts, smaller blade size and a much thinner some than the zx5, but slightly thinner than the zX7.

the i59 may work better for more shallow angle of attack with slightly lower bounces, especially relative to other ping irons.

the v sole in the Srixion really benefits steeper players, -4* or more.

if you are coming from zx5, the i59 mY be a bit much…. The i230 maybe a smoother transition. Especially pier spec.

you will notice a bit a distance drop off from the zx5/7 to the i59. Just different lofted clubs… you could power spec them though.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm actually playing the Nike VR Pro combo which have pretty small heads. I hit them pretty well, just inconsistent with my swing at times.

I've been looking at the i59's and zx5'zx7 combo, but have only been able to hit them in store.

I have a set of Nike VR pro combo as well…. Love them. They are so fun to play. Such a testament to the fact that newer isn’t always better.

Bead blasted and custom edge grind…

You may get along better with the i59 if you are use to the narrow sole and thinner top line. The head size won’t be an issue, except the long irons don’t have the same pop at the Nike.

You can consider the i525 on the 4&5… I have it in the 4. It’s bent 1 weak while the i59 is bent a little strong to blend the set.

Yeah, I keep trying to leave the Nike, but I always end up going back to them. They feel great and the smaller head seems to help my with better contact.

I ordered a used set of the Srixon before your original reply. I'm still eying some sets of i59's and a i230 set.

I just got of the course with the i230 for the first time.

they are the most consistent irons across the face I have ever hit.

Heel, toe, straight….. the front back dispersion is wild. Thin strokes only cost you a handful of yards…..

buuutttt…. The i59 were very consistent as well. To early to tell which are the gamers…… but these are two amazing irons.

it will not come down to one being better than the other …. They are just different irons for different players.

Just flat out impressed though.

Went looking for a 4i to replace my HMB and align to MP20 MB. Never really liked the thick sole and bulky body. I've had Apex MB, ZX7 & 620 CB.

The i59 were among the first demos and really thought it'd be like the S55 I had.  The sole and offset was all wrong for me even though I was middling them.  Nothing felt flush, but thay may be the lack of a forged head.

Took my Nike Pro 3i out and thought this was so much better until I was handed the P7MC and had a grouping better than my 7i.

Wow, you have all the irons I want! Haha

Did you notice any difference the thicker sole of the i230 vs i59?

I had some Pxg gen 3P's, really didn't like them when on the course. I only mention because I hear some being compared to Pings.

the course today was pretty wet. It was not raining when I was out there, but had been over the last day.

i was catching things a little thin at first because I am use to lower bounces and narrower soles, tried to avoid digging.

These soles are not really that wide, but they are the widest soles I have ever played since I had my Cobra RadSpeed irons.

once I got comfortable, got really great ball flight and the i230 didn’t catch the soft turf at all. This was expected though. These irons should excel in these conditions. They really retained a ton of spin in the wet grass.

i hit a 185yd 5 iron into a level green And it pulled back 4ft. Not ideal, but in firmer conditions, this should have been a hop and stop approach shot.

I need to see how they do on firmer ground and if I end up being too thin … this was the problem I had with the ZX7….. thin all day.

really impressed though with the i230 and i59.

Agree with you on the PXG Gen3 P heads. Beautiful clubs. Powerful. I had the same set. On the course I did not like the turf interaction. Found the soles grabby and not versatile. Could not warm up to them and moved them. They’re big too, felt a little unwieldy. But I also tried the T head and didn’t like the sole on those either.

I do not think the Ping soles are similar. The Ping designs are a better match for what I’m looking for and/or need. The lineup is hard to beat across the board IMO, lots of great options to blend a set, and things I noticed are the consistency in distance and the turf interaction is superior. The i230, i59, Blueprint — I was impressed with how they get through the ground. The i59 and BP are nice as they have thin soles but also some bounce.

Seems like a lot of people still like their Nike Pro's!

Curious to know how the I59's compare to Iblades... seems like the technology is fairly similar.

The i59 launches and spins a little lower and offers a little more forgiveness.  Subjectively, it doesn't feel as solid as the iBlade.  The performance differences are pretty subtle in general but an extremely consistent ball striker will see a difference.  The i59 is pretty unique in that it offers a good amount of forgiveness relative to it's short blade length.

I am hanging onto both sets….both are really great and work for me.

it was 37 here in the northeast today…. The i230 were delivering as well as you could ask… been throwing my winter set of MP225 Into the mix as well….

Will need to wait for some warmer. Spring weather though….. I really do feel like the i230 is one of the most complete irons though… feel, control, consistency, looks at address….

it’s going to be a fun spring.

Been playing the i59's for a few months, coming from a guy who played the iblades for 4+ years with some stints with the blueprints. Subjectively I think the i59's are a bit firmer feeling vs the iblades because of the CTP elimination in the i59. I stated this in another thread but I feel like the iblade was very comparable to the ap2/t100 and the i59 is more along the lines of the 716 cb with the technology of the aluminum and weights in the heel/toe. I prefer the sole interaction of the i59 vs the iblades. I know they haven't gotten alot of love from the tour pros or general public but I don't see them leaving my bag for awhile. Additionally I think ping pros have been slow to transfer clubs, cink is back to the i210's after the stint with the i230's with many of them still playing s55's and iblades.

I have two rounds under my belt with i59's and I have to say that I am pretty impressed so far. Landed a set from a fellow WRXer in excellent condition. First time playing Modus 120x shafts. I really lucked out with this purchase as the set-up (blue dots with standard lofts) seems to be a perfect fit. Feel on a well struck shot is really nice. Not as nice as a traditonal forging, but I never expected them to with a 17-4 face. Spinsistency is a real thing. I never really doubted it as Ping doesn't miss the mark that often.  Forgiveness is excellent. I played iBlades off and on for a long time and based on my limited experience, I do believe the i59's are an upgrade.

i59 is designed to be a higher spinning iBlade and in my experience, spins a TON.  I love spin but these were exceptionally high.  And I'm not a high spin player.  In robot testing the i59 spin 400rpm more than the iBlade.

The i59 spins a lot, typical of all of Pings players irons.  When I hit them at Ping, they said the 59 was designed to launch a little lower and spin a little less but retain spin better out of the rough and in wet conditions.  I can't speak to the performance out of the rough but I experienced lower launch and spin with the s59.  With that being said, the differences were pretty minor.
