Using Only One Specialty Wedge

I play a 56* wedge only for about 5 years now but only because i walk and i need the bag to be lighter.  I do miss the 52* & 58* degree combo i used prior. 52* was money for 105 yards, now i play wedge with an abbreviated swing.

Used 58 almost exclusively in early 00's.

Now I use a 55 primarily around the green, the 59 if shortsided or in the green side rough and from bunker. Use the 50 wedge from 20 yards off the green if I have a benign route to the hole to get it on the green and roll it to cup.

I'm a bump-and-run guy all the time around the greens.  Sometimes off the tee, even!  (Although usually not on purpose.)

But if a higher shot is absolutely required, then any 56º wedge with 10º of bounce and a standard middle-of-the-road sole profile. I believe that is the perfect wedge for 99% of humanity.  My current one is a Callaway Jaws.

This one:

Only thing that gets me out of the bunkers here. The 56o/12 just doesn't. I have a 58o/9 full face RTX on the way that may replace the 60o, will see

I'm not hitting my 56 that far, but similar concept to my game.  I use my 52 and PW around the green more than anything else.  My 56 is for the sand or a full shot from 75 yards and in.  I currently have a Callaway PM Grind 56/10.  I'd like to have a Mizuno 56.  My 52 is a Mizzy S18 and I hit it more consistently than the Callaway.  Must be a match between the grind and my swing angle.

That's crazy because I am a huge fan of my 58-60.  I played 60 for so long I have had a bit of a struggle getting into a 58 but its works.

I left for a 2 wedge set up years ago to add a long club in the bag, 7w / 3i / hybrid depending on the course.

But most of my shots unless just pitching into to the greet is with my 60. Anything under 100-80y as well.  Unless I need to keep it low and stop I may grab the 52.

I was a Vokey fan for years but my best wedges for the last few years where  Clevelands.  Even though they are not custom ground have loved them and cannot play much else.

I was a HUGE Scratch wedge fan for years and then Trusty Rusty as well.

- Something that continues to go long off the tee in the fairway
- Something that is a fairway finder when needed and long
- Something that high, consistent and helps with par 5’s
-  Something to help with long par3’s and short par 4’s

-  Something metal, lots of them and go the gaps I need
- Something metal, 2x of them and helps me 120y and in
- Putters - limited rotation because I cannot afford misses

Golf is what you make of it.  Play grateful and accepting. We are all lucky to have it.

Rather than expecting lets all try and appreciate instead.

I play mostly a minimalist set-up (sorta, 10 clubs). I go with a set pw and gw, basically 10 and 11 irons, then a 56° sw. Every once in a while I wish I had a lob wedge but not nearly often enough to carry one.

The answer is 52.  Why?  It’s the middle of my 3 and I can simulate the other lofts by adjusting.

when I set up my wedges. I looked at what the best wedge players were doing.  They mostly played 48/54/60 special wedges with 6* gaps.  If you can hit partial shots and the best can, then 6 is very playable.  If not go with full shots and 4* gaps.  I adopted this for a long time and wedges are really all that I am good at.  I now have stronger lofts in my set and I have been at 46/52/58 the last few years.  Back to topic…

I base everything off the middle wedge at 52 and then adjust -more or less traj and release.

I would say my TM HiToe 56.10.  It has enough bounce for full shots, but not too much or too little to be versatile around the greens.  I use it ~75% of the time compared to my 60* from 95 and in.  I typically do not hit it full, but can get about 115yds if needed.  I have contemplated taking my 60 out and using a 2i or 3i in the top of my bag.  That is a project for next spring.

I'm in the single specialty wedge boat, too. I have Ping I210's 4 down to U (50°) and jump to an Edison Forged 57°, and use that for 100% of my shots inside of 115, provided neutral conditions. I ended up putting the LAGP TPZone05 putter shaft in it, and it's so good, I passed my PAT with it. Don't sleep on the TPZone in wedges.

So much of this is where your set pw loft is! At 47* for me, I reckon the 54* pmgrind19 would be the single wedge of choice. That said, I am considering dropping a 50* gw and the 54* for a 52* that I am happy to hit full to 1/2 swings with. The 58* lob will stay. I have an old 50* to play with bending, but it doesn't really have enough bounce for an all purpose wedge. ~sigh~, back to golfmart I go...

Can’t do it. I have to have 3 wedges but if I had to choose

most versatile is 55 degree callaway hi toe with 10 bounce   with toe relief

prefer PW for most bump and runs

Prefer LW for most lobs

I can try B+R and the Lobs with the 55 bump and runs falls short and the lobbing is not as accurate when I open the face with 55 especially short sided tight pins

I play 712mbs.  I could probably drop my gap wedge and lob wedge and get by with my 56*ATV wedge.  I use my PM Grind spatula for most touch shots, so I can relate to enjoying the eye 2 sole.

Spatula is a good descriptive for the PM Grind (the 19 model in my case).  I also use a 58* as my SW-jack-of-all-trades.  With my stronger lofted iron sets, I'll include a 52* or 53*, but with my 51* or 52* PW sets, it's just the spatula.

I will also sometimes use a Wlison Staff PMP 58*, which is also lovely, but not quite up to the pancake flipping ability of a PM Grind.

2021 Vokey 56 Degree F Grind 14 Bounce.  Great out of the bunkers and I can pop it 75 yards and get some nice spin off the fairways.  Even clipping around the greens out of bermuda is not to bad with it.  Great club.
