4 hybrid- I like it because I can hit anywhere from 195-215

sounds crazy but just eliminates tension around 4 iron and over-swinging

Similar to you, I go D, 3W (tuned to 4W), 4H, 5H, 6I. I've tried 4i and 5i, but I hit the hybrids more consistently. Yet the 6i is probably the best club in my bag in terms of consistency.

I've watched many people hit 3i-5i, and it feels like many of them would be better off with hybrids.

Update on my testing:

I currently have in the bag a 7W then go to a 5H but with a 4H shaft length. I’ve been losing my Ping G425 consistently to the right so I’ve been exploring options. I’ve gotten to a point where I have 0 confidence with it.

I recently purchased: Titleist U505 4 iron, Callaway X Forged UT 4 iron, and on a whim, a 2021 Cobra King Tec 4H turned up to 22°. The cobra hybrid was a steal at $80 new on the Bay.

I really have enjoyed the u505. Great ball flight and easy to launch. The Cobra hybrid has been great as well. Dead straight and consistent flight. I hit the hybrid roughly about 10-15 yards further (carry) than the U505.

Think I’m going to rule out the X forged UT pretty quickly. I’m just not very consistent with it. It’ll be a battle between the hybrid and the U505.

Iron History: Macgregor blades -> Tour Model 3 -> 20 year hiatus -> Callaway Rogue (ugh) -> PtxPro -> P790 -> MP4 -> MP32 -> 623CB -> ZX5 mkII -> Cobra Tours

4H: Cobra King Tec

This is a place in the bag where bonded hosels have always caused a bit of agony for me. I'm also getting older - so looking so set up my "50's playa bag" and replacing irons with hybrids.

The problem is...

Hybrids and FWs all tend to cluster in the 19* - 23* range. With odd number gaps - 19* - 21* - 23* - 25* etc. These don't really fit my gaps

I happen to need/want even number lofts - an 18*, and a 22*.

Thank Vishnu for Titleist. I do appreciate the adjustable hosels. Also pretty cheap on the used market.

Currently playing a 913h at 18*, a 916h1 at 22*, and a 916h1 at 25*.

Really helping me to cover the gaps between 3w and my longest iron (6i).

Sometimes it's a 21* set iron, sometimes it's a 22* utility iron, at other times it's a hybrid.  The most consistent club is the 22* utility, even a miss with it goes relatively straight.  It really shines off the tee.

I recently added a C722 23* Hybrid.  It's fantastic!  Easy to hit high and straight or so easy to put a draw on to it.  Another fantastic club from Tour Edge that nobody knows about, lol.  I picked it up during their Black Friday sale for $60 new in the wrap!  It might be the best value I've ever had in golf equipment.

I've had a 4 hybrid in the bag for 4+ years and it is just money. As a 5 handicap the decision drew some jokes from mates, but even they comment on what a great club it is.

Pros:

  • Much more consistent gapping from your 5-iron
  • In general, you hit more good shots
  • The result of mis-strikes are waaaay better than with a 4 iron
  • Roll and bulge on the face
  • The descent angle is such an asset coming in from 200+ yards

Cons:

  • Hitting it into a headwind.

Yep, most of these with me too.

Only posting that, for me, the 4-Hybrid I have really doesn't supplant the 4-iron.  Heck, it goes further than my 3-iron.  But a whole lot higher.

The whole area after 3W to 4-iron is a bit of a mess right now.  2 slots and conceivably 4 clubs (2H, 5W, 3-iron, 4-hybrid) to fill them.  And this without swapping the x100 in the 3-iron for a spare, "I really need to get a shaft puller, idiot," CK Orange Hyb shaft I have.  Nice problem to have though.

7w, UW at 21* or even a DI could go in there. I presume you don't want to squeeze in a 5 hybrid, otherwise that is also a logical choice
