23 degree driving iron as 4 iron.

Then a 19 degree hybrid and a 16 degree fairway.

Gives me versatility from various lies

Exactly. Find myself with a lot of shots in this yardage and having ability to fly the ball low with roll out versus high and park it really give me good opportunities to lower score.

Iron. But I put a Recoil in it to give it some dynamics of a driving iron.

I was using 24* and 27* Titleist 915H hybrids in my 4 and 5 iron spots, but I wasn't getting what I wanted out of them as far as control.  The MP 30 4 and 5 irons with S300 felt just a bit too heavy, and they aren't very forgiving either.  So I got on ironfinder.com and ordered brand new TaylorMade 200 Steel 4 and 5 irons with stock stiff shafts (steel) and they have been awesome.  I had to go old school to keep the lofts where I needed them, as it's getting pretty hard to find a 23 or 24 degree iron that actually has a 4 stamped on it instead of a 5.  I also had a full set of the 200's back in the day and I remembered how good they were, so I knew the long irons would go very well with my MP 30 6-PW.  I'm a very happy boy with this configuration.  The irons are much less prone to hooking than the hybrids, and the flight is just as high.  It's a win-win.  My next club up from the 4 iron is an Epic Flash 7 wood.

I play my set (Apex Pro 16's) 4-iron which is at 24 deg and subsequently weaker than what is now the norm for a 4 iron, so technically mine is more like todays 5 iron. So, in the 4 iron slot (that is what I'm assuming is what is being asked here) , I have a Srixon zu85 3 at 20 deg. I have Recoil F4 110's in my irons, and the Srixon has a Recoil F4 95 which works for me.

All about gapping and versatility for me. A lot of current new hybrids I would need one stamped with a 5 to replace my 4 year old rinky dink. I cut mine down a bit so its closer to a 4i length, 23d loft (its an Epic from 2018 so I can loft it down to 22 if needed). Its handy for putting against heavy fringe or long bump/run shots as well.

Happens to be the longest tenured club in the bag as well. 🙂

I went through a bit of trial and error a couple years ago. Tried my set 4i (785) vs a more forgiving 585 4i and finally a u85 driving iron.

Ultimately I landed on the driving iron but using the same steel shaft as the rest of the set. This gave me the best combo of extra forgiveness while still feeling like an iron and not some tee only club.

I'm using a set 4 iron, but I combo into a more forgiving model after the 6.  It is 22.5* and a stock shot carries 195-200, landing fairly soft.  It also gets used as my primary club out of the trees, I have not had a lot of success with hybrids and this shot.

To gap with the 4 iron I have a 20* hybrid built to play like the matching 3 Iron and a 16.5* 4 wood after that.

The truth is, the 4H is just more reliable, plus really useful out of the rough. The one spot in the bag where I let reason prevail.

I go Driver, 3W, 2h, 20 degree DI and then 5 iron.

It's been great for me to have a wood, hybrid and driving iron in the bag to utilize for different shots. My 5 iron is 23.5 degrees loft though.

I recently got fit into some P790s and it made me adjust as the 4i became too close to my current hybrid.

I picked up a Callaway UW 17* as I don't plan on carrying a 3w in the bag this year.

I play D, 3w,5w, 3utility, 5-PW.  The utility is the 712U in a 3 iron loft with project x 6.5, rest of irons are x100s.  It is the perfect chickenstick for me.  I have carried the 712mb 4 iron, but I don't find myself playing courses where the par 3s fit that yardage.  I could put it in the bag, but it wouldn't see much more use than the 5 wood that is also a space filler.

If anything can go right, it might!

All of the above.

I'm a big fan of the new trend of using a game improvement iron in the 4i spot that also doubles as a tee box driving iron. This is usually in the ~21 degree range.

I also switch between 19-20 degree hybrids and fairways with longer shafts that even though are only 1-2 deg loft different still provide ~20yds more distance or so and/or different trajectory if needed.

I decided I am going to start my year without a 4 iron. I have bent my 5 iron 1 degree strong so that it is at 25*. I am going to have a 21* Apex UW, a 18* ZX utility, a 17* Apex UW, and a driver. I want to have more options at the top of the bag and use the driver and utility iron as my tee clubs and the UWs as my approach clubs into par 5s and such. I didn't want to lose any of my wedges and rarely have many 4 iron shots into greens. We will see how it goes.

I have all three and I vary it based on the following:

  • The course I'm playing; sometimes, I play a course where the driving iron comes in really handy on three holes. It's a short and tight course.
  • If it's not a course I know I want to bag the driving iron, I try to go to the range before I tee it. I'll hit two, sometimes three shots, with the 4 iron and I can tell how precise my swing is that day.  If it doesn't feel good, then I welcome the hybrid to the bag and bench the iron in the trunk. I like the iron best because it takes up less space.

Off the tee, I hit the driving iron the best of the three. For the fairway, I hit the iron or hybrid better than the driving iron.

After years of being stubborn about using hybrids, I've finally come around.  I still have the strength, but lack the flexibility day in and day out for the 2-3-4 irons.

I am currently using a older Cobra Baffler TWS 20 degree (stock stiff) that I broke out of the closet and I'm hitting lights out with it. I'm working it pretty well from 205-215 from the FW and about 225 average off the tee.

I may go on Ebay and look for the 23 degree TWS.

I had this issue. I hit my PXG gen 3 4 iron pretty well, but it was the club that I had the least confidence with in my bag, because one out of 4 shots would not go as I would like and it was tough to stick a green from a distance with it even though a well struck shot had pretty good height.

had another PXG fitting in November and tried the XP, which was pretty consistent with my P 4 iron. Then tried a 7 wood, but this was not giving me a better result.

Hybrids were not on my radar as I tend to miss them with a hook, but was convinced  To the Gen 4 X and XF Hybrid and hit it better than the 4 iron consistently, but ball flight was still not ideal with the X head. Tried the XF hybrid and this one was the best of the bunch by far, but the sound was not the best with the weight setting that was optimal.  However, given how great the results were I ended up ordering the XF despite the sound. I hit a ton of shots with these two hybrids and to my surprise did not miss one to the left. Really excited for this coming season to play with my new hybrid. Old 4 iron with go onto the bag that I keep down south as it is still a great club.

I have a big gap at the top. I go straight from 9* driver to 20* hybrid. and then my 4i is 23*. It is pretty intimidating to hit off the ground. It's either 150yd duff or a perfectly mashed 225 laser. I wouldn't mind finding a UDI but finding them in lefty and actually trying it to make sure it hits windows/distances is next to impossible where I live.

I go driver (7.25-8*), 3W (15.5*), 3hy (19.75*) and lastly 4i (24* P7MB).  The only issue I am having now is I hit 3hy basically the same distance as 3W but with a lot more consistency.  I am thinking about ditching 3W and swapping back in my old P750 3i which is 21* I believe.
