Below the Course Rating Thread

Hello All!

 

Thought I'd start this thread because there are always guys and gals on the forum wanting to "get to scratch" or "get below scratch," or "get my game to competition level."

 

Well that all starts with being able to (at least semi) regularly being able to shoot under the course rating at the courses you play, regardless of length, so I figured it would be fun to track what it looks like for various people on the forum when they shoot below the course rating (as opposed to "under par.") in terms of GIR, Fairways, Putts, etc. Perhaps a standard format without too much detail as the standard post and then we can expand if we want. Here's the format I propose:

• Recap: (how man pars, birdies, bogeys, etc.)
• Birdie/Eagle Putt Distances:
• Fairways:

• Putts: (ball must be on the putting green - if ball is on the fringe, that is an "up and down" opportunity)
• 3-Putts:
• Up and Down: (inside ~30 yards? I like this better than the PGA Tour's "Scrambling" stat for various reasons)
• Sand Saves:
• Penalty Shots: (water is 1. OB is 2, obviously)

• Tees: White (practice round for Team Play, which we play from the white tees)
• Yards: 6,250
• Rating: 70.2
• Slope: 126
• Score: 69
• Recap: 4 birdies and 1 bogey
• Birdie/Eagle Putt Distances: 6, 4, 35, 15
• Fairways: 10/13
• GIR: 12
• Putts: 26
• 3-Putts: 0
• Up and Down:  3/5
• Sand Saves: 1/1
• Penalty Shots: 0

 

We could, of course, add additional stuff, but I don't want it to be too cumbersome. Should be pretty easy to go back over a round and get that stuff up here. It will be interesting to see the kinds of rounds up here and just how much they vary from player to player. For those of you who don't know me, I'm a very, very short hitting scratch/below scratch player, so my stat lines will probably look a lot different than some of the longer hitters out there.

There’s a ton of 136-142 rated courses in upstate sc.  he’s correct.   There are no flat greens , flat fairways or otherwise flat anything.  Lol. 
 

my home course is 72.2/136   And the state mid am was on green valley which is 74.2/142.  Both are short courses ( under 6800 tipped ).

I cant remember too many details except the darn 4 putt on 15 for a double,(par 3 GIR'd clown hole pin location)

7 birdies 2 bogies 1 double.

 

Birdied last two holes coming in off the 4 putt on 15

 

 

To expand on the 4 putt which is all i really remember of the round....

 

30+ first putt from the front middle of the green uphill to a ridge and the hole as  1.5ft below the ridge and greens were fast. Leave it 5ft short because of i carried the ridge with speed, its off the green. 2nd putt trickles over the ridge and is 3ft past the hole. Miss the third and tap in the 4th.

The ironic part of this round was that all my bogeys came on par 5s, which is ridiculous

• 3-Putts: 0
• Up and Down: 2/4 on par saves, 2/6 total-see "Sand Saves" below 
• Sand Saves: 0/2 but par both times (par 5 in 2, 320 yard hole off tee shot)
• Penalty Shots: 0

 

ROUND 2:

• Slope: 134
• Score: 70
• Recap: 16 pars, 2 bogeys
• Birdie/Eagle Putt Distances: 2 putt birdie (20 feet) and a 1 putt birdie (10 feet).

• 3-Putts: 1 (after driving a green to 60 feet) 
• Up and Down: 3/3 on par saves, 3/4 total see "Sand Saves" below

This one was my last decent round in the last week of December at my home course.  Really not playing well, but scraped a score together.  Played white tees with my hubby.  The men's rating/slope is: 69.9/123.

 

• Yards: 6134
• Rating: 76.7 (women's)
• Slope: 136 (women's)
• Score: 75
• Recap: 2 birds, 13 pars, 2 bogeys, 1 triple
• Birdie/Eagle Putt Distances: Fairly close, but can't remember distances
• Fairways: 7/14
• Greens: 7/18
• Putts: 26
• 3 Putts: 0
• Up and Down: 7/8 par saves, 1/1 bogey save, 0/1 double bogey save
• Sand Saves: 0/0
• Penalty Shots: Ball in a culvert drain about 50 square feet in area (lucky me)

After analyzing a lot of data from thousands of rounds, Lucius Riccio, a professor at Columbia Univ., proposed a formula for predicting the score of any round:

 

Score = 58 + putts - (4/3) x GIR  +/- 2

 

Using the data in the previous posts gives the following results:

 

@Obee :

Actual Score: 69  Pred. Score: 58 + 26 - 16 = 68

 

@MelloYello :

Actual Score: 70  Pred. Score: 58 + 29 - 16 = 71

 

@dvq9654 :

Actual Score: 70  Pred. Score: 58 + 30 - 17.3 = 70.7

 

@b.mattay :

Actual Score: 70  Pred. Score: 58 + 33 - 18.7 = 72.3

Actual Score: 70  Pred. Score: 58 + 33 - 20 = 71

 

@ThinkingPlus :

Actual Score: 75  Pred. Score: 58 + 26 - 9.3 = 74.7

 

This suggests that GIR is the most important indicator of score; that, in turn, suggests that FairwaysInReg/Par5Second are also very important.
