How many different swings do you have?

Recommended Posts

Post-COVID, I started binge watching Netflix and YouTube a lot, and while on YouTube the algorithm led me to YouTube channels / contents involving the topic of golf (wonder why...). Before I know it, I'm drawn to 5-6 different YouTubers teaching me their tips, swing techniques, etc. First I was fascinated by this (yeah~~ free golf lesson!) and tried to pick up what works for me and I'd head to the driving range trying these out.

BUT, few months pass by, and I've come to realize that watching these YouTubers has really messed me up on swing. I've been gaming this sport for ~15 years now, and it used to be arriving at the clubhouse 20-30 min. prior to my tee time, hit the John, spend 5-10 min. hitting maybe 15-20 balls and off to the #1 tee box.

Nowadays, I head to the course an hour early, not so much to warm up but to hit a bucket or two of range balls mainly to figure out which swing style works for me for each club that day. Seriously, I can think of at least 4-5 different swings styles for each club.

Is anyone else dealing with similar issues since COVID (or in general)?

I have a separate swing for my woods, irons, and partial wedges.  To be honest they all look alike, but the intent with them is different.  It is actually kind of funny if you video yourself trying to make different moves, you'll see how similar it will look to your normal swing.

In the bag

Driver: Taylormade Sim2 Max 9*

4w: Callaway Mavrik Sub Zero

Hybrid:  Apex 19 3h 20*

Hybrid:  Apex 19 4h 23*

Irons: Callaway Apex CF 19 5i-AW

W1: Vokey SM7 54* S

W2: Vokey SM8 60* L

Putter: Swag Handsome Too

I have:

-two driver swings (straight that sometimes draws and a fade)

-two iron swings (high spin baby fade or a draw that goes 15 yards longer to cut into the wind)

-one pitch swing (it's ugly)

-one chip swing (it's even uglier)

Most of my swings involve more grip and alignment than actually swinging differently unless I'm intentionally trying to slice it around a tree or something.

One swing with different feelings for woods and irons which I think translates to different points where the swing bottoms out.
But, I’ve gone through what you’,re gone through in pursuit of a “better” swing. It doesn’t work and it will lead you down a rabbit hole.
You end swinging to positions instead of swinging the club and playing the hole.
I think everyone had a unique, motion which is natural to them and when you try to add in tips, which might work for someone else but not you, things go awry.
The trick is to find the “right” tips which work for your swing.

If you’re suffering, maybe try not playing or swinging for a couple of weeks and then revert back to your old style of pre round prep?

Well, (obviously) different swings as I progress through the bag. Swing wedges differently than irons, irons differently than FWs, FWs differently than the driver. I am pretty good at working the ball, but a lot of that is done with grip and stance.

In general though, I do slightly flatten my swing with irons and wedges depending on where I'm playing. Take a shallower divot on Florida or Texas bermuda than on NY or Michigan bentgrass.

It depends how you define swing. I have knockdowns and punch shots etc but these are just variations of my swing.

On full swings i make the same move pretty much everytime, looking for a small draw with almost every club.

I was there once.  I came dangerously close to succumbing to "now I'm totally confused and frustrated" syndrome which (if not checked) could have degenerated into "I hate this game, why do I play it" disorder.

Remedy?  I went to the Jim Venetos swing to flush my system of the dozens of classical swing thoughts in my head, and then worked like heck on my short game and putting.  The problem is the JVGA swing actually is working pretty good for me, and I haven't gone back to the classical swing.  Looks funny, but I'm enjoying the game again.  And no endless pounding of golf balls at the range.  Go figure.

I think I probably in essence have about two very different "ways of swinging" right now. I put that in quotes because in reality, there's just one actual, fundamental swing I'm stuck with but I think I have two ways of going about it.

Some days what works is just to concentrate on relaxing, getting my hands high on the backswing and releasing the club through impact to a full follow-through. That's one of my "ways of swinging" and it's the one I like the best. When it works.

But there are days when just relaxing and letting my arms swing freely leads to these weak blocks and fades and short bloopers with my irons and wedges. So on those days I switch my "way of swinging" to deliberately trying to square the clubface at impact. I try to feel connected with my arms sync'd up to my body. It becomes a very body-driven type of swing rather than the arms just windmilling.

I suspect if I video'd my swing on both days they'd look very, very similar. It's really more about a feeling than changing the fundamental shape of my swing. But the body-driven thing makes me hit it straighter and lower while the free-arm-swing thing makes me hit it higher with a little fade or draw to it.

But no more than that for me. Two ways of swinging is probably already one too many. I don't want to add any more, thank you very much!
