Wedge Shaft Dilemma

I was fitted into KBS $ Taper 120 stiff in my Mizuno irons about a year ago. I play 4-GW in the 921 Forged and love them.

I bought the T20 wedges (54/58) on the whim earlier in the year that had KBS Hi Rev 2.0 125g stiff shafts to try and keep with the KBS family for similar feel.

While the rest of my game is improving over the past 2 years (3.9 handicap), my wedges have gone very poor. I’m struggling with a ballooning flight on full shots with wedges that come up short and fight it very hard to get a feel when gripping down on wedge shots around the green and pitching (very light feeling).

Any recommendations?

Learn to control loft through impact. I would never say that the shaft has no effect on flight, but if you are balooning there's no shaft to take that much launch/spin off.

My experience with those same Hi Rev wedge shafts wasn't good.  They were short and ballooned on me as well.  I stay away from shafts designed for wedges.  IMO they are designed for people that need help spinning the ball.  I would consider $Taper 120 stiff in your wedges.

I currently play MMT 125s in most irons, and have them in Gap and LW, and they work well.  Only I am considering going to lighter weight composite in 5-PW and when that's decided I will address Gap and LW shafts.

The Hi Rev 2.0 has a really soft tip and is designed to launch and spin high.  If you like your iron shafts, I'd give those a shot in the wedges or just go with the tried and true Dynamic Gold.

I had a similar reaction with the Genius wedge shaft in SCOR wedges. They were made by KBS for SCOR and I suspect they were comparable to the hi-rev. No idea what would happen from one swing to the next, no control over partial shot distance.

Within KBS maybe try the 610. Could even do C-Tapers if you need to cut a lot of spin. Personally I wound up in LZ wedge shafts and I really like them in my sand and lob wedge. I play my set shaft in PW (TT Elevate Tour S) and tried the X flex 8-iron set shaft in my GW. I could just as easily carry those shafts through my sand and lob and may do that next time.

Regardless, my experience was similar to some of the above statements where the spin-producing soft tip shafts just don’t work at all for me.

My irons also have KBS $-Taper 120 stiff shafts in them.

Been playing recently with some Cobra Snakebite Wedges with KBS Hi-Rev 2.0 Stiff shafts in them.

I agree with the OP’s assessment.  Full shots are higher and spinnier than my previous Corey Paul wedges with KBS Tour V wedge stiff shafts.  I have probably seen the ball spin back more on the green as well instead of my previous one hop and stop. If I try to hit a shot a little harder than usual when between yardages the spin really jumps up and the trajectory balloons with resulting loss of distance.

Around the green for chipping and pitching I also see the ball check up more.

I definitely prefer the Tour V wedge shafts.

Lower flight, and added spin (also on partials) can be achieved by using "the #8 iron spinner trick", and in your case that means $ Taper X flex 130 grams #8 iron shafts as wedge shafts. More info here:

It seems to me like the KBS Hi Rev 2.0 is really just the 8 iron out of the Tour S based on comparing the weights, tip length, and step pattern vs. a couple wedges built with KBS Tour S.

I may be totally wrong.

I really think this is true. I have wedges in my garage with KBS Tour X 8 Iron shafts and the step pattern is identical to the Hi Rev X in a different wedge. I don't think KBS would ever say that's the case but I didn't see a difference to my eye.

This is the gospel. End the thread.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.
