Is this Scotty fake?

Hi all,

 

New member so apologies if I’ve broken any of the rules re introductions etc. 

 

This scotty Cameron is for sale with a load of other older but relatively high end clubs in a local auction house. Just wanted to get some opinions on if it was real or a knock off as I don’t know much about scotties and next to nothing about older ones. Obvious concern is over the paint/ enamel lifting.

looks legit from what I can tell, paint loss is typical with older models, this one looks like it was very well used

 

the shape of the heel looks a little odd, maybe there was a ding that was polished out?

Yeah it’s certainly pretty beaten up. Was basing my bid on the value of the other clubs but thought it might be fun to have a go at restoring this.

the good news is the face looks really clean, so you probably don't need to re-mill.  but the heel looks pretty ground down on top, from the angle of the pic it looks pretty close to that third dot.  that aspect would be hard to fix.  otherwise a light blast/polish should clean it up pretty nicely.

100% real but well abused! WTF has happened with that grip, looks like a mechanic went straight from the workshop to the course 😄 

 

EDIT: The more I look at it, I am almost certain that has been polished to within an inch of it's life - the engravings are very shallow and the shaping is off.

Well I won the scotty in the auction and have contacted a guy in the UK for a refurb and been told it’s a fake. Luckily the other clubs in the lot means I’m not going to be out of pocket. 

found the online serial number checker and it’s not showing. Could have done with knowing this earlier.

My gut feeling is that this is a older-than-current-database putter

 

I honestly don't think anyone back in days would put so much effort into faking a Scotty; I also don't think anyone would have gamed a "fake" putter so extensively... Just my 0.02

it's fake. the milling is comparable to the fake ones. the rounded edges on the neck and bottom are the same on the fake ones. the grip is strange.

Milling is the most legit part of the putter! it's been polished so much it's lost its shape but the milling looks good, still.

I say Fake. The wording on the sole is way off in size, shape and depth. Milling off as well. Face stamping is easiest tell. Look at the C(ameron) on the fake and the C on the real one posted.

Seems to be dividing opinion. 
 

I’ve tried to get some better pics if the face engraving, heel and serial number. 
 

The heel has certainly been ground down by someone at some point. The edge is certainly sharper than the others, you can feel it.

The CAMERON on the face look skinny...fake.

 

The rest looks real to me. It does look like someone has softened e ery single edge in that putter though.

I used to own the same 2011 Newport two from new and I know that this model was one of the most faked as it was easy to copy. Some tell tales are the skinny Cameron logo on the face, the notch on the top line next to the neck looks far too shallow compared to the pictures on the Scotty website and the font on the sole doesn’t look right to me. I think it’s a good replica.

Putter is most definitely real, just been sanded and polished to remove dings. All the telltale signs of fake here are due to removing metal by someone, aftermarket. Looks like someone took a buffing wheel to it in spots.

The cherry bomb holes on the face are cut erratic looking to me as well. Jagged looking. One would think SC could do better.

I'm certainly no expert but would think that if the patterns etched on the face of the putter were done by a CNC machine the spacing/patterns would be identical on all of the same model putters, they definitely aren't when comparing the two photos.

When I see those two zoomed in photos on @boggyman post, it looks fake now. The lettering is wrong, the bombs aren’t neat and the milling isn’t as good up close. I’m now certain that’s a fake.

I’m with you. When you blow up the pics they look off to me. I’m no expert by far but it just doesn’t look right.

It's real, the face has been remilled and like everything else on this putter not done very well. There's an easy way to tell that it is real but I don't want to say what it is so the fakers start doing it right.

Incorrect. While it is a "Real" putter, it is an Absolute Fake  Scotty Cameron.

it's real, but someone really messed it up trying to remill the face, shape the edges among others attempts. Either way it's not worth anything from a monetary standpoint.

Nothing is jumping out at me that would make me say it's fake. I think you're good to go.

Looks solid to me.  Might be a fun project to try to restore on your own if you can get a great deal, or even send into the Scotty custom shop for refinishing.
