My wife still hates country. I have to hide my listening to it by wearing my headphones. Kind of like sneaking cigs back in the day.🤣

Have her listen to J. J. to see if she still hates country music.

Or this Hank Williams Sr. classic.

And for the record, JJ is a golfer.

I tried to find a Nathaniel Rateliff but then I got busy.  Going to see them this weekend.  Pretty excited, I think they’re great.

100% agree with you.  Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats would be on my radar for seeing live.  Have to believe they'll put on stellar show.  Allow me to be of assistance.

I appreciate just about any genre of music.  Exploring into the unfamiliar has always been an impetus to discovery.  It either catches my ear or it doesn't.  It's well crafted, or it's not.  Innovative or disposable.  I enjoy most, several I categorically despise.  My dime, my spin.

I'd post some techno that I enjoy on occasion.  Belleville 3.  Originators.  Look it up.  But have a feeling that would cause apoplexy in the lounge.  Not "real" music.

I'll leave it to the rest of y'all to over analyze what I'm listening to at any given moment.

Here you go Touch.  This may be the post you are thinking of.  Make sure to listen to, at least, the first minute. It gets better and more relevant the deeper you go. Old, socially conscious, hippies like chisag might even enjoy it.

First an apology to aen as I thought he sent me a song to listen to. Sorry Mr. Drummer.

I see now it was you DMM. Thanks for clarifying that it was you. I listened to it and besides the nice horn playing in the tune I have to say I don't care for it.

I’m just the opposite. My tastes are incredibly limited in range and time. Probably 95% of the music on my phone comes from a five year window, late 70’s to early 80’s. The little bit else is a little bit of country from maybe the early ish 90’s and a couple of newer songs that the Mrs thought I might like and she was correct. She listens to virtually everything. But I’m that way in just about everything, food, literature, entertainment. I’ll reread, rewatch, relisten the same stuff over and over again…….and  again and so on.

I’m an incredibly boring person. If I find something I like I just stay with it. Not one to adventure outside of own little box. Although I did use to change golf equipment on a regular basis.

The wide range of taste and knowledge in here in is impressive. I find most of the time I have no idea what most people are even talking about.

Let me explain my position and then we can move on from this discussion. It will not bother me one bit if I am the only one in our group that thoroughly dislikes Rap and Hip Hop.

When you grew up as I did listening to and loving the wonderful music that was made by the groups on my list you experienced musicians and singers that had real talent, and the music they made was cherished by much of the listening public. Rap and Hip Hop is a far cry from the music these bands contributed, and don't get me started on the difference in the lyrics of the songs or the appearance of the performers. I am grateful that there was a bunch of awesome R & B music to listen to in my early years, and I will continue to enjoy the real music from back in the day as I enter into my old man years. 🕺

Rap and Hip Hop have not been good for society in general either.

https://impactofrapmusiconyouths.weebly.com/negative-impacts.html

GLORIFYING VIOLENCE
'Gangsta rap' is a hip-hop sub genre that focuses primarily on the negative aspects of inner city life. The lyrics often glorify criminal activity and degrade women. This genre of hip-hop has been a source of tremendous controversy and is often cited as the cause of the increase in violence within communities.

SEXUALISATION
A topic that has heated up recently is the sexualisation of women not only in the lyrics of rap music, but more importantly the visual representation of women in music videos. The popularity of music videos has reinforced the overt sexuality found in hip-hop music. Women in these videos are often scantily clothed and use their bodies to get material things. Young women are surrounded by these negative images, and many have adapted their lifestyles to fit them.

DRUG USE
The promotion of drug use is consistently found through rap verses and often glorified. Rappers fail to show the negatives and the consequences of using and doing them. You’ll hear in multiple rap songs how they hustled in the corner to gain streetcred and eventually become wealthy and live “large” as they would say. Young and poor youths from the ghetto are the most impressionable. If he can do it, why can’t I. The music videos only exhibit the women cars and houses, who wouldn’t want that.  2008 article on sciencedaily.com found that drug references in rap songs had increased sixfold since 1979

 EGOTISTICAL
There are a number of rappers that are quite egotistical and many rap songs can be basically be boiled down to "I'm the best, toughest, and hardest. Don't agree with me, I'll prove it"?
The scary thing is that this mentality seems to be contagious and when combined with the glorification of violence, we have people murdering other people for inconsequential slights. We've gone from "words will never hurt me" to "stick and stones may break my bones, but words will cause me to get a bunch of friends, drive by your house, pepper it will bullets, kill you, maim your girlfriend, kill the little girl playing out front, and get myself imprisoned
throughout the formative years of my adult life so I have destroyed whatever opportunity my life may have held. "

I'm old too, and agree with your take.

I have a good friend who is a doctor down in South Carolina. Dr. W is a lifelong golfer and Clemson grad. He also is a big supporter of Clemson Football and doesn't miss many home games. I asked him last week if he ever met Lucas Glover. Doc told me this story.

It was a couple of months after Glover had won his US Open in 2009 at Bethpage Black.

There was a booster party at the stadium prior to the start of the game. Doc was at the party with his two young kids when he saw Glover across the room. He went up to him and asked if he was as nervous playing as doc was watching Lucas come down the stretch of finishing holes on Sunday at Bethpage?  Mr. Glover said he was a little nervous yes, but that was nothing compared to how nervous he was going to be while leading the charge down the hill in front of 80,000 fans in an hour. Lucas Glover was being honored at the game.

It's funny, as it pertains to new music.  I just have songs, no albums, from current musicians.  It really is a sad state of affairs I can hear Chaise Longue by Wet Leg on the radio and download it, or Milky Chance, or Nathaniel Rateliff and Night Sweats, or Maneskin, or Billy Strings, Lizzo, or Billie Eilish, etc.

The catalog of music doesn't exist anymore, and frankly, the money isn't there anymore.  I am watching Sound City and production is now run through a computer program, it isn't a band in a room.  Interesting insights into what this means for the music industry.  I am a big fan of music and I will tell you what it means for me.  I not only go to as many concerts as possible because I want people to be able to afford to make music which appeals to me, but I also buy the merchandise because it is another revenue stream for them.

The idea of a world without music or the arts is pretty freaking bleak, and NEA helps to keep some art forms alive even if I don't necessarily ascribe to some of the aesthetics.  But someone does, you might not like Velvet Underground, Big Star, or the NY Dolls, but you sure like some band that pulled some of their creativity from those early alternative rock n roll bands.

This dives deep into the old music, but if this doesn't sooth you, I don't know what would.
