This story took place in October of 2006 in Las Vegas.

 

Being that I have worked in the Hospitality Industry most of my life I have had the luxury of heading out to play golf Monday mornings while pretty much the rest of the world goes back to work. My work week ends Saturday night, so for decades I had Sundays and Mondays off.

One particular Monday I did not have my usual game. I wanted to play so I thought I would just go out as a single and get paired up. I went to the Stallion Mountain Golf Club east of the strip off of Boulder Hwy (It was the old Sunrise CC opened by Tour player Jim Colbert and was the location of Chip Beck's 59 during the 1991 LVI Tour stop). I walked into the pro shop and told the individual at the desk I was a single. The man said that the course was wide open and there were no other golfers but me wanting to play for a couple of hours. I said oh well looks like I am playing solo. I headed to the range for my warm up small bucket. I was at the range about 15 minutes when the starter walked over to me and said a single was just paying his greens fees and would I mind if he joined me. I said I would welcome that and continued to hit balls. Five minutes later I see a gentleman walking towards the range. This is the image that I saw. A extremely well dressed golfer with a nice Callaway Staff Bag over his shoulder. He was wearing high end golf clothes( think sold in CC Pro shop's type apparel) , top of the line Foot Joy Classics and a TOUR Callaway cap. Now inside these fine golf clothes was a man who I immediately thought was one of the ZZ Top band members, see his beard came down to the middle of his stomach. We shook hands and introduced ourselves. We loaded up the cart and headed to the first tee. It has been my way to let any golfer/s that I am randomly paired up with set the tone regarding how much interaction we have with one another while playing. For almost the entire front nine Steve and I may have had 4 sentences each between one another and they were all golf related. Maybe a wind direction question or a what iron you were hitting on a par 3 tee box, but that was the extent of it. Steve was a good player. I would say a solid mid single digit handicap. Remember now this was a very good golfer dressed in fine attire and hitting players clubs that were housed in a pristine Callaway Staff Bag (no name embroidered). Somewhere during the 11th hole he turned to me and asked if I liked music and if there was a type of music I liked best. I answered that I was a kid who was raised in the Motor City during the Motown years and loved that music, but I was a rock and roller at heart for sure. He asked if I had a favorite band or two? I said I liked so many but my favorite was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. He said he liked Tom Petty too. That was is it for any interaction between us for most of the back nine. We talked a bit when Steve asked me about a couple of holes lay out (as he told me on the first tee this was his first time on the track), but that was all in the way of interaction between us. We get to the 18th tee box, the two of us had played well up to that point and there was a very mellow enjoyable tone to the round. On the the tee box he asked me what I was dong that upcoming Saturday Night. I told him I worked on the strip and Saturday Night was the busiest night of the week for me. He asked if I could get the night off if I wanted to. I replied that if it was something important I could indeed get someone to cover for me yes. He replied good because...... I'm Steve W********* and I am Mike Campbell's guitar tech and have been with the Heartbreakers for over 20 years. I asked so you are not Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top? He laughed and said no he was not Billy Gibbons. He said I would like to put you on the VIP list for backstage access Saturday Night. Tom Petty was headlining the 2006 Vegoose outdoor music festival. Gentlemen I went and saw how the show comes together and functions like a well oiled machine during the performance. It was quite a new perspective for me regarding a live Petty show. I danced away as I always did to many songs at a Petty concert. I was on the side of the stage with other people who had the same pass that I did. This was the 8th time I had seen Tom Petty live. Did I meet the band or my favorite musician? No, but It was a very special night regardless. It was a night that was provided to me because two strangers got paired up together for a round of this great game and they enjoyed each others company quite a bit.

Gentlemen last week I sent Steve a message containing my condolences and thanking him again for that wonderful backstage experience. He replied that I was most welcome for the VIP pass he provided me over 10 years ago. He thanked me for my well wishes and added that it was tough (Toms passing) and was out of the blue.

 

With Tom's death last week I thought I might share this story involving my favorite game and my favorite Rock and Roller and how they came together one week in Vegas.

 

Rest in peace Tom Petty.

What is is it? What is that “zen state” that we hear of? How do you find it?

 

Ive never really tried to meditate. I can say, for myself, probably one on the most desirable states of mind is that feeling of “contentment accompanied by mild optimism”. Not overly feeling happy or euphoric, as that passes quickly. Just a peaceful contentment is excellent. 
 

Anyway, as I say, I’ve never really meditated, just read a little about it. Trying to “feel nothing but your breathing” and “totally clearing your mind” I can’t really do. Or if I do it just means I’m “zoning out” lol

 

But I did read something about a certain way to approach meditation that more sense to me and I’ve tried it a few times. 
 

This is an iPhone “pano” pic that spans the 120* or so of my full field of vision. If you zoom, you see that little garbage picker truck and right behind it, I made a small red hash you can see. That marks a spot about 300 yards away where the bike/running loop is. You really can’t see in the photo but I can just make out tiny bikes 🚴 and joggers as they appear between the trees.

 

Now, to meditate, I start by observing them. Then, I gradually pull pack my sense of vision to see all the people in my 120*. People playing with dogs, just waking, sitting/laying out reading. I try to see them all including the bikers I started with.

 

Then, I continue to see them but also I start to include all the “nature” in my vision. Trees, grass, birds, animals, and finally even any insects. The sky. 
 

Then I try to include sound. Again starting with the wind, then voices, then just any airplanes or traffic etc

 

Finally I try to include “feel” the wind, the sun. 
 

The idea is instead of “clearing your mind by closing your eyes”, you actually try to take in every possible thing in your senses to attain an interesting state of relaxation.

 

Sorry for the novel 🤣. I just wanted to “write” it down; )

Yea man.  I must say.  I forget sometimes how blessed I am as far as surroundings.  I’m not a person who does well when crowded.  It’s not that I don’t like people.  It’s just that I don’t like people en masse … 

 

so yes.  I probably do this daily and don’t realize it.  But I do it plenty and do realize it.  Usually while hitting balls out back. Or on my putting green.  But lately I’ve made it a habit to walk the 1/8 mile or so down to the bee hives.  Sometimes I’ll watch them a while. Sometimes just a walk by while picking up golf balls I’ve hit down that way with driver.  But you’d be surprised how easy you can wash away the day watching these bees.  
 

 

 

 

so yep. Never an eye closer. I’m always seeing the whole field.  It’s the best meditation there is. It’s so much of a habit my wife calls  it my “ super power “.  You’ll be a pro if I don’t see you coming.

I was kinda looking forward to it as all the recent reviews on GolfNow were pretty positive and I kinda just play Paiute anymore. Which, ya know, is fine. They're challenging tracks always in stellar condition, everyone there knows me now and they give such a great pricing break to locals. Love all three courses, even if Sun Mountain always seems to kick my azz. (And I don't know why! By the numbers, The Wolf should be tougher!) 

 

On the other hand - when I booked it, I only saw Flamingo as the address and just assumed it was WEST Flamingo. Tons of great courses all up around that southwestern corner of the 215. Then I looked the other night and was like "Aw man, it's DOWN THERE? Yuck." 

 

That whole mid-east part of the valley? Yeahhhhhh ... don't care for going there. 😂

The Mrs and I took our show on the road today.  We headed over to Manito CC in Spokane, WA.  Played a quick 18, the Trader Joe’s, the Rack, and then stopped at the Olive Garden on the way home.  We have none of those in MT.

 

Manito is a par 71, 6500 yards, 70.5/132.  The host of the ‘44 PGA Championship.

 

Lost my first drive, double, then a bogey, then I bogeyed 8 to make the turn at 4 over.  Finished one under on the back after birdies on 12, 13 and a bogey on 15.  A pretty good 74.  The Mrs shot a pretty good 112 as well.

My dad kept a couple of beehives back in the day! He got me my own little suit and I'd go help him get the honeycombs out. This is why I have a love for real honey to this day; not the typical junk you find at grocery stores that doesn't even taste like honey.

Oh I don’t hate them.  I just said that to be silly.  I actually love the current coach.  Really good man.  I do prefer ECU , I’m just partial because of family in Greenville Nc and i came to love that little town .  I could absolutely live there and play Brook Valley CC every day of the rest of my life.  One of the most restful places I’ve ever been. I don’t know why.  Just is.

The other day my daughter came to me and asked me what a virgin was.

So I was really proud of myself because I didn't lie to her and I didn't make her wait to ask her mother.

I just laid everything out there for her.

We talked about penises, vaginas, erections, sex, you name it we covered it.

It wasn't until after the power point presentation that I thought to ask her, "So where did you hear the word virgin anyway ?"

And she said, "Well , on TV."

She said, "Yeah. They said , A new virgin of Play Station is coming out soon."

Good ol' Chappy. Haven't been in many years and heard it's changed a lot. But so has Hillsborough St. Drove through it last in I wanna say 2018? Didn't even recognize anything - all my old spots were gone. 'Cept my old dorm ... University Towers. Still there!

Yep. Once you taste pure. You can’t eat the store junk.  Ours comes off our sunflowers.  Which makes a really thin, and light colored honey.  With a really clean taste.

The Metro hit the Rack in Scottsdale rather often when he lived in Arizona. It's the only way to shop.

UNC is decent.  But it’s mostly a great QB.  This defense isn’t anything special.  Our line is just that bad.  Wow.

... Opening scene was a statement in itself. Knowing exactly what goes into a continuous shot like that where sooooooooo much can go wrong so easily, you just have to be driven by the desire for excellence and won't except anything less.

... I worked for a director on a TV show and he gave me zero direction for 3 days and on the 4th day he told me not to look down because the way the scene was lit, he lost my face in shadow. I said to him at dinner it was unusual for a director to give zero direction. He said some actors need direction and some don't. You don't. And more importantly, it's just TV and I have 8 days to shoot 16 days of material so good enough is always good enough. 

... That is something that has never entered Paul Thomas Andersons thoughts. Every time I watch the opening scene I am blown away. (2.39 AR because TS would want to know)

There Will Be Blood is one of the best films ever made. Ever. (But also ... DDL. Kinda makes it easy.) 

 

I lived in LA long enough - and Ms. aenemated is an OG Valley Girl (though of the goth kinds Tom Petty described as "all the Vampires walking through the Valley") to more appreciate his Licorice Pizza. I absolutely freaking loved that film. 

 

It was like ... a complete opposite of the childhood I had but very much the childhood she has. She was a child actor and was just being like "Yep, that happened" so much through it. What I loved so much was it kinda described my own childhood ... but as a little honky kid in the rural south. Whereas for her, it was her actual childhood. We sat up all night talking about it. Kinda one of our things is to sit up all night and talk things like that. 

 

As much as I claim Vegas, most of my adult life has been spent in LA. For good or ill. Mostly ill on multiple levels. But then the best cuz of Ms. aenemated.
