Anyone planning on trying the G430 irons?

I love PING. I've probably bought more PING clubs over the year than any other brand. But they essentially are selling a 6-W set as a 5-PW set. Most golfers are not going to be able to hit a 22* 5-iron.

Yeah that's my gripe. I don't want an iron with less than 24° loft. The 23.5° in the previous models is Ok but 22° is a 3 iron from just a few years ago.

If you look back at traditional lofts the previous 5-PW was effectively 4-9 iron compared to older lofts. Now the 5-PW has gone one step further and is effectively 3-8 in traditional terms. By 'traditional' I'm comparing to a Ping classic the Ping Eye2.

I thought we'd reached peak 'jacked' lofts already but not sure why the companies feel the need to keep going one club stronger again. Carry 4 wedges used to seem excessive but now 5 must be the minimum when your PW is 41°.

I'm sorry but you are shooting in the 70's on a really hard course...clearly you are playing the wrong irons. You need blades.

Blades with ctapers and TX wood shafts of course!

I'm 67 & not getting any younger, I have Mizuno MP68's, Titleist 718 AP2's, .... if I can break 80 again with my new G430's .... the game has just became more fun than frustrating.

Edit: I was smoking my Ping G425 Max driver, which made less work for my iron's. I guess hitting greens in reg is over rated, regardless of the sticks.

Well, then look no further.  The G430s are long, straight, and forgiving.  It's almost like cheating.

I don’t get why everyone is so concerned about the gapping thing. It’s just a number on the club. So instead of starting at 4 Iron you are starting at 5. Or instead of 5 starting at 6 or whatever. I guess the club lengths are shorter compared to more traditional lofted clubs though.

It's more like a 6 iron that goes as far as a 5 iron, but has the height and accuracy of a 7 iron.  Literally the best of both worlds.

I’m curious if there are some large gaps once you get to the wedges.

A 41 degree pitching wedge would probably go about 150 to 160 for me (107 driver ss) from looking at some of the YT videos distances and swing speeds. I know Ping makes a gap wedge that would be in the 140-150 range. Then it would fall off to a standard 50 degree wedge which goes about 110-120 for me.

a 20-30 yard gap is huge at part of the bag.

Any thoughts or am I missing something?

It's a 5 degree difference, as the gap wedge is 45 degrees, so the gap should only be about 10-12 yards, not 20.  Perfect gapping, in other words.

You guys who are complaining about lofts & wedge gaps, just keep playing your existing set and hopefully that will make you happy.  I played my 2nd round today with my new G430's at PGA West - Stadium course, the one the PGA Tour play during the American Express tourney in mid-January.

I had an incredible fun round, shot 76 from the Blue's, lost 1 ball in water, made Eagle on Par 5 and one Birdie and missed 2-3 other Birdie opportunities.  I ended up buying the 45* & 50* only used them once or twice today, could of gripped down on the 41* P/W so they may not be all that necessary, time will tell.

The G430's are the best set of irons I ever owned, nice high trajectory and the ball hits & holds the greens. Get fit for the right shaft like I did and give these some serious consideration.

A few pic's ....

Cheers

I'm sure the clubs are great but we all know it is the Indian more than the arrow that shoots good scores. Great round. 👍

Tks for the positive feedback.

Sometimes the Indian (First Nations in Canada) upgrades his Bow & it shoots much farther, straighter & hits it's target, too.

Back home in Alberta, I got 83 rounds in last summer, haven't broke 80 since late July, I can hardly wait to get back on the home track with my buddies to see how these new sticks perform.

I went from i20s to G425s. Stock grahite regular shafts in both sets.

How would you describe the differences? Just curious.

For me the switch gave me much better misses (especially when leaking to the right) both in distance and left-right.

And surprisingly, I got more spin and (not surprisingly) more height.

The graphite is new to me and I finding that tempo pays a dividend.

I am getting better distance forgiveness on the poor strikes. My miss is usually toward the toe.

Not sure if more spin but height is definitely different.

I can't make a judgement on right/left dispersion yet but I have avoided the long and left miss so far.

We are a month from having our bermuda fairways provide nice lies and I am looking forward to finding out just how good they play.

Not at all, I’m getting up there in age and was thinking it would be nice to use these jacked lofts and swing easier to ease the wear and tear on my body. It did not work for me.

That was sort of my initial impression, but I have to say that after hitting them for a month (indoors only), they no longer give me that impression at all.  Especially when I look at the improved swing speed.

Just got to Palm Springs today (March 29) and looking forward to playing a few courses over the next week.  PGA West is on my list, but unfortunately, I don't think I'll score that well.  Tomorrow is Mission Hills West Gary Players Signature course.  I always play it first because it's right near where we are staying.

My club had a demo set of G430 irons with AWT Stock Shafts, so I tried them yesterday.  Love Ping stuff and have always enjoyed playing the G-Model for some extra forgiveness.

I found these clubs unplayable.  The strong lofts gave me trajectories that couldn't hold a green, and too much distance.  The 5 iron is a very comfortable club for me, but the Ping G430 5i launch was too low to be playable.  Usually hit 8i from 150y, but was sending 9is over the green.  This thread has lots of discussion about although these irons are stronger lofts, you still get normal trajectories.  I didn't find that to be the case.

In order for these clubs to be playable FOR ME, I would need to get Retro Spec Lofts, and a shaft that is high launch to add some more spin.  If you are a low spin player not sure how you get what you need out of these irons.  I love Ping stuff, and I really like the G430 woods --but in my opinion they have ruined the G430 irons with this loft set up.

I’m a total PING fanboy. I’ve tried or owned pretty much every G level iron released over the years. Couldn’t find a shaft that would give me my desired launch with the 430’s. Felt great though.  I just prefer a very high launch, even at the expense of distance.  Sticking with my old Rapture J specs at 45* PW and original AWT shafts (I think the “J” stands for Jurassic period). Funny that they were considered extremely low lofted when they were first released.

if you normally start with a 5i but can now get there with a g430 6i then what’s the issue? You just adjust the club you use.

I play g425’s in retro lofts so a 28.3* 6i. At a recent ping driver fitting, afterward we hit the g430 7i in std loft (29*) vs my g425 in retro loft which is 32.3*. My 7i was going 125-130. The g430 I maxed out a little over 150 which is what I normally use my 6i for. If I were to buy the 430’s I would just start my iron set at the 7i then go up into my hybrids.

Now having said that...I did a bit more research and to cover 30* down to a 50* UW in the G425s results in needing 5 clubs (7-8-9-PW-UW).

With the G430's to cover 29-50* it takes 6 clubs.  (7-8-9-PW, 45*-50*).  3-4* loft gaps for a guy that only hits his 7i around 140 carry isn't needed.

So if I order another set of Pings it would be g425 7-UW in std lofts.  I don't think I need retro with a 7i on down to UW.

Too many people are overly concerned about the 430 wedges & gapping.

Played my last round today in Palm Springs, heading back home to Canada.  Only used the 45* wedge once today, I chipped in from 20 ft for 0 putts to make par. Could of used the 50*, P/W, 9 or 8 iron, but decided to grab the 45* for a bump & run.

For all the times I used the 45* I could just as easily gripped down a bit on my P/W and not even carry the 45*.  I'm considering doing just that and putting my 60* Vokey back in the bag.

Still loving the G430 irons, scrambled a bit but broke 80 from blues at Escena.

Happy Easter weekend .... cheers.

So I hit and played these clubs and did not find a big difference loft for loft then my G30’s.  Distance and dispersion really not noticeable.  Feel wise like the 30’s better and definately looks wise like the 30’s better. I feel the gray/black badge looks awful and up close looks cheap. Good thing is will be staying with my 30’s and saving some cash.

Senior golf and played my first round with G430 HL irons.

I was pleasantly surprised at three things during my round:

1.  Even when I felt like I didn't hit it well, the dispersion was shockingly good.

2. Feel was even better than I thought it would be.

3. Ball flight was really good and ball was easy to launch from just about any lie.

Even though the course was not in particularly good shape, the irons performed very well.

These irons play a little different than my T300's so I think it will take a few rounds to get them dialed in, but I'll take 9 over for 18 holes any day of the week.

I hit and then bought these things. Unbelievable.
I’ve had knee surgeries and shoulder problems ( need surgery but won’t do it until I can’t tolerate it anymore ). These clubs are my friends. Point and shoot. Pretty good looking for a GI iron.
Thanks Ping.

Had a Ping fitting while in Palm Springs over the winter, got my new G430 irons in mid-March, so far played 12 rounds with them, broke 80 on 6/12, lowest score so far was 76, today I shot 37/40 = 77.  Should of been lower I missed too many Birdie putts.  I got my distance back, my long irons (5i & 4i) are a big improvement over my old Titleist 718 AP2's, I'm hitting the longer (190 & 205 yd) Par 3 greens in reg again. I bought the 45* wedge as an after thought & it's been amazing, it's produced some excellent 1/2 & full shots, not to mention bump & runs.

For those thinking about new irons the G430's are worth taking a look at, they're very forgiving on off center hits, nice high ball flight that bounces once & holds the greens & don't worry about the jacked up lofts nor the sound, your buddies will say wow that sounded like a good shot. These will definitely help your game, possibly save you a few strokes like I experienced as well as make the game more fun again.

Cheers

I just got a 5i-50* set off global golf’s u try it program to demo for 2 weeks.  Like my g425 retro lofts in the 6 and 7i but feel like I give up too much distance in the 8-UW. So I’m hoping to see how the g430’s stack up in normal lofts.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
