How Often Do You Upgrade Irons?

Before GolfWRX, there was GEA.  Not the version that everyone remembers as a community, but the original, where there was at least as much equipment chatter as here.

I'd only started playing golf a year before that forum started, and it was not the best influence.  In my first two years of golf, I picked up two sets of irons, on top of my initial set.  After that...

Once I discovered classic iron sets, it became cartoonish.  I bought and sold three dozen sets or so in a three year period.  At Golf Nerd outings, I would sometimes swap out the entire bag at the turn, for the fun of playing each set.  I've owned 3 separate sets of Ram nickel blades, two or three different sets of Precept Tour Premiums...

But, as MtlJeff says, none of these were actual upgrades.

Finally tired of the club race, and now its just occasional curiosity purchases, except for a couple acquisitions in the last few years to flesh out my Ram Tour Grind collection.

Oh I loved Precept Tour Premiums!! Those were sooooo good.

I’m getting an itch to but a new set of irons. I’ve had mine for a few years now and they’re still in good shape, but a new set is mighty tempting.
Just curious - on average, how long do you keep a set of irons before trying something different?

Over the past 27 years what I've noticed is most people change irons like they change cars and that's fine, just try not to leave too much performance on the table or spend $$$ on stuff you don't want to buy.

Oh yes. GEA was my enabler. I'd been playing for several years before landing there in 2000 or early 2001. One set of irons became six. I swapped or outright bought every "shiny object" that caught my eye. A dozen or so in rotation. With age comes wisdom, shoulder surgeries, etc. I now have TWO sets of irons. Only two. One on the bench getting a re-shaft as the heads have been sitting in a box for several years. It's been a long lay-off so this should be interesting.

The longest I've used a set was my 712 Ap2's. Used them for 8 seasons until the grooves were so worn I was getting flyers when hitting them off a tee. Tried the 2019 T100 for a season, didn't love them. Tried the Apex Pro 21 for a season, hated them. Now I'm going into my 2nd season with i59's. I like the performance and the look but not so much the sound/feel. Might have to try and find another 712 Ap2 set somewhere.

Seems like I get about a year out of irons before I get bored with them.  I’m getting fit for Artisan irons this summer though so I plan on putting an end to that.

I was ready to change then had 2 great rounds so I froze, then played like hot garbage this past Sunday and looking again. Its not the clubs fault, but darn it there are a lot of nice options out there and I feel the need to try another shaft combo.

My Callaway X2 Hot irons are still serving me just fine since I bought them in 2014.  Out of my clubs, I would hold on to my putter the longest, then irons, fairway wood (love it!), hybrid, and least of all driver.  But changing driver is not going to magically drop my handicap by much.  I just switch to my 3W off the tee and hit it pretty much the same distance.

Before I found Golfwrx, every 4-5 years.

After, well, let's just say, way too often.

I felt this to my core. I used to be so good. I would buy a new set of irons. Play them for 5 years and then start looking. However, things have changed..

I usually replace my irons about 4 to 6 years. I usually wait until a model has been out for awhile to see what the reviews are like.

For everything in my bag I change quite frequently but I've only gone thru 2 different sets in the last 8-9 (changed the shafts in one of them so some may count that as 3), and I don't really have the desire to change em. Yes I've been intrigued by MANY different sets but because I know exactly how the ball is going to react especially from the rough I just don't see a point. I am currently using the Apex TCB's and I'll be honest I'm not the biggest fan of how it looks at address but it performs way to well for that to matter.
