Bidding war vs buy it now.

So I listed a club on ebay for a starting bid of $125 and a But It Now of $180 figuring it would sell for about $150. 3 days left on the listing and I saw it was bid to $172 so I figured it would sell for that or somebody would buy it now. 

 

Nope, currently sitting at  $182.50 🤣

 

I don't get it. I also noticed it was a bunch of $2 bids, so somebody doesn't understand proxy bids, either.

The ones bidding above your original opening BIN probably never saw your listing until the first bud was made to make the BIN go away. 
if you place a small bid on something and go away , eBay will alert you 24 hrs and then 5 mins before the bidding ends. If you don’t bid it doesn’t do that. That’s the only thing I can assume some do it for. Otherwise , it doesn’t make sense , but common sense isn’t common anymore.

The buy it now is active until bidding goes above it. So whoever bid above $180 is paying too much. I'm not complaining, it's just baffling to me. I'm just happy it's selling.

Is that a setting you can turn on? Any time I've ever placed a starting bid on an auction with a BIN price, the option to buy goes away immediately.

Did you set a reserve? Must be something that happens since the last time I used these practice's. Not sure , but once an opening bid was made , if you didn't have a reserve , the BIN would go away. Maybe that's changed and eBay has something setup that if the bid is at $179 , the next bid must increase by $2 and that would forgo the BIN. Never seen it but I guess it could be some kind of bots set in place that doesn't understand the logic lol.

It looked like the buy it now was still an option whan I saw it was close and was expecting to get a sold notice before I got more bid received notices. 

 

I still have a couple more to list and will see what happens.

Did you have a reserve set?

No reserve set, I don't usually list stuff with a reserve.

Buy it now goes away once a bid is placed.  It might still show the buy it now to you since you listed the item, but it's no longer an option to the rest of the world.

The whole golf club selling thing is just ridiculously silly on both the bay and wrx. I actually offer stuff on wrx for what the minimum sale on the bay minus their fees would fetch get little to no traction except from those wrxers wanting stuff even cheaper which is ridiculous. So it usually net sells for more than originally offered on the bay which I don't mind. 😂

There are some exceptions that may vary by country but for the most part, buy it now disappears after a bid is placed.

 

Exceptions:

• Reserve isn't met
• No bid has reached 50% of the buy it now price (only for certain categories)

Yeah, guess it's the sellers view showing how it was listed. Again, I paid less than $20 for it so I'm happy. I was only expecting $150 tops. Global Golf has them for $160 I think. 

 

<edit> damn, looks like prices went up. Guess that's why I but in the off season. 🤣

I have a 95% win on ebay bidding wars and I usually bid at the beginning so I will get a reminder before the listing ends. I don’t bid again until the last 5second and I will never bid inbetween to bring the price up.

Yeah, I forget when they made that switch.  Years ago, the Buy It Now option would stay on until auction end.  Now it goes away as soon as there is a bid.

I can't remember why gift cards do that on eBay but it seems like they're always right around or over face value for popular gift cards. Seems like I once heard it's because people use their credit cards to do purchase them to get points but I'm pretty sure you could just use your credit card to buy them any other place for face value if that was the case. Lol. Idk. Money laundering... 🙂

I'm in the camp of the BIN disappearing right after the 1st bid is made - although someone indicated only if the bidding was up to >50% of the BIN price ?

I tried to look earlier but eBay was down.

 

Back up 20 minutes ago and an item I wanted to bid on was ending a few minutes ago and,,,,, eBay was down AGAIN.

 

Just got back up and the auction I was interested in was OVER. LMAO

To add some closure, it sold for $192.50 and the buyer didn't pay. I relisted it and it sold for $200 and he paid right away. Yay.

When you add a Buy It Now option to auction-style listings, buyers can either purchase your item right away at the Buy It Now price or place a bid. In most categories, the Buy It Now price must be at least 30% higher than the auction price.

I find the bay easier, more convenient and I have some form of recourse if needed.

I sent a set of irons that got lost in the mail, so I refunded the buyer. I thought it was insured for the declared value, but it was only covered for $100. Luckily they showed up a month later. Buyer wouldn't respond to messages but eBay was able to get my full amount back because the tracking number showed as delivered.

Works both ways, I sell a lot of machine parts there.

Interesting. I usually do non auctions buy it now but i accept offers. I feel like I have more control of getting the price I'm looking for. Auctions sometimes work out really well but other times it's a dud and it stings when that happens.

I did a putter that way and it took a while, but I got full price, so I was happy. With this club, I started it at $125 and anything over that was a bonus. I thought the $180 buy it now was fair but a stretch. I wasn't expecting $200 bidding, but ok.

it’s a strategy use. If the buy it now isn’t a good deal. Just place a single bid. You’re not on the hook for much , and about half the time you can get it cheaper than the buy it now. 
 

the ones that irritate me are the buy  it now with or best offer - offers.  In my mind that means make an offer.  Obviously I’m going to offer less than the buy it now.  Right ?  Otherwise I’d just hit the buy it now.  Right ?  
 

had a guy recently with a sik armlock.  He had an opening bid of 299.  Buy it now of 599.  Or best offer.   I offered him $500 the first day before it had any bids.  He refused. Fine. I went up to $525. Thinking that covers shipping too. He refuses.  So.  I placed a bid at $299. And waited.  It sold for $389 I believe. I wasn’t the high bidder because in that 7 days I went another way.  But I was the high bidder up to 325.  On the last day.  Just to flip it.  He messages me and says “ I’ll take $545 for it ( I think that’s accurate ).   And I replied “ I’m the high bidder at $325.  With 6 hours to go.  Why would I pay $545 now “?     
 

I have no idea why he didn’t understand how it worked.  I hope the winning bidder got his putter.  I kind of feel like he might have refused to sell it that cheap or something like that.  It was an odd deal.
