Mizuno JPX923 Hot Metal players…what are you using for your gap wedge?

PINSEEKER72

Recommended Posts

I just demoed the JPX923 Hot Metals and they are great clubs, but I’m disappointed that Mizuno does not include a gap wedge that matches the set. I have always preferred using a GW that has the same cavity and look as the rest of the set, and if this iron series is marketed as game improvement, I would think that the target market for this set would feel the same way.

For all of you JPX923 HM players, what are you using for your gap wedge that is not a specialty wedge?  I was considering maybe the Hot Metal HL GW, but thinking it might be too big and have too much offset. I’ve see a few posts saying that there is a HM Pro GW, but Mizuno doesn’t list it on their site. Is the 923 Forged GW a possibility?

Interested to hear what you are using and how it is working out for you. Thanks in advance for your replies.

I believe they have one…the loft may not be your traditional GW loft you like though.

In my short dalliance with the 923 HMs, I had ordered it 5-GW. The 923 HM gap  wedge was 48*. It blended nicely into the set.

Then I used my 52* CBX Zipcore as the next wedge.

I’d encourage you to give the 923 HM Gap wedge a chance. It’s got a soft feel with the feedback needed for those closer shots. It also has great turf interaction. I found it just as easy to hit as the 923 HMP PW even though the design is different from rest of set.

So i picked up a set of 923HM 5-P, and went had the same dilemma,  i was hesitant to order the "set" gap wedge, but my brother plays 919HM's and its his favorite club in the bag, claims its way more forgiving than any vokey 48* wedge, so i have one coming,

I have the 919 HMP and the GW is a 919 HM but didn’t exactly match the set as it was for HM and HMP.  Local Mizuno fitter swears by the GW they offer. He had his 225 Mizuno Pros thru PW and then a 48 Vokey and had to order a GW. Said the 48 Vokey just didn’t go anywhere compared to the GW they sell.

I got some black Testers paint and matched it to my 919 HMPs so they look the same now.  OCD I guess.

They been having this issue since the JPX 900 I bought in 2017.  The gap wedge that came with the set didn't gap the distances well.

Today, I tested the JPX 923 HM Pros and learned they don't provide a GW with it, however, I hit the S23 and was very pleasantly surprised.  I'm planning on getting a 49* or 50* to my JPX 923 HMP order.

If the intent is to blend aesthetics along with gapping, performance, similar feel, etc. then 923F would be an option. Just to note though, looks and feel may stand out a little since you’re blending a set forged gap wedge with cast irons. Other option is to get the same OEM GW with your other wedges. My $.02.

The GW listed on the site is not the same as the rest of the set, I saw it at the pro shop. It’s not as “bladey” as a Vokey or Jaws wedge, but doesn’t have the same cavity as the PW or the other Hot Metal irons.

How does it look at address?  Does it blend in with the PW?

I play the 923 HMP’s with the set gap wedge. It blends great, distance gap is good, etc. From there I go RTX Zipcore 54/12 & 58/6

The set gap wedge looks great at address & feels really nice.

Why would you want a cavity back wedge? Most if not all people don’t need SGI /GI features in wedges, IMHO

I ordered the G wedge that comes with the 923 HMs.  As far as looks and full shots it blends well with rest of the iron set.  I've only played two rounds with them so I'm still trying to get the feel of using the GW for chipping.  My old Cleveland Rotex 50 degree has an entirely different feel, but I think the Mizuno will be fine once I practice and use it some more.

I ordered the 923 HMP (5-pw, all bent 1 degree weak) and then ordered the set gap wedge at the standard 48 degrees so that I had less of a gap between the pw and the gw.   Then for the end of the bag I ordered the S23 52 degree and 56 degree.   Unfortunately I will be waiting a while to get them due to the crazy wait times on custom orders.

If the gap wedge is more blade like, do the sand wedge and lob wedge match the gap wedge or do they become more blade like as well? Would love to see pics as nearest shop that carries them is over 50 miles away.

Here is a picture (off eBay) of the HL gap wedge and the other “blade like” wedges for the hot metal line
