Whoop strap

Recommended Posts

I wear it on the wrist since it came out. I rotate between wrists and clean it every morning with rubbing alcohol as well. If I dont I start to get  a red rash...

Lol...whoop strap when I was younger didn't measure heart rate...it raised it.

It was around my dad's waist...it was called a belt.

When I read the title of the thread this is what I thought it was about. I've gotten as far as your post and still don't know what it is.

That’s interesting. Ive never used any of these and never looked at it quite the way you do.

Ive been hardcore fitness for 6 years now. One benefit is my resting heart rate is down at 50bpm. But I only check it every week or so, I’ll just feel my pulse and watch the stopwatch on my phone lol.

Even when I was cycling hard with intervals, I never monitored my heart rate.

But I see what you mean that you “like what it tells you”

I assume you mean that you see your heart rate elevate a lot when you drink and even stays high the day after.

How do you mean it tells you to ride your bike more btw?

For those of you wearing a Whoop, do you wear a regular watch or Apple Watch (or other smart watch) on the opposite?

My wife got me a Whoop in 2021 and the data is unreal. Far better than my Apple Watch. Most of the time I wear the Whoop on my right and a regular watch on my left.  Just curious what others do.

100% accurate. The respiratory data is accurate. It’s accurate when I’m coming down with something or my allergies are flaring up.

So, one of the most important things that it tells me is how good my recovery is, which is when I sleep.  It measures my resting heart rate, and also heart rate variability, which is a measure of the time variance between beets.  The higher the heart rate variability, the better.  It means that the parasympathetic and the other nervous symptom measure are in sync.  (You can read up on that.).  In any event, if I have a few drinks, my recovery sucks.

It also measures "strain" when I exercise.  Strain is a measure of how hard my heart is working.  Depending upon my nightly recovery, I have a "target" strain the next day.  The other day, I took a long bike ride, and overdid it - I way exceeded my target strain rate.  I paid for that with less than optimal recovery, and I felt tired all day the next day.  My strain is a measure dependent upon the long term trends of what I have done before.  The measures are all personal to me.

The better shape you are in, the more strain you can handle.  But, it is all personal, my optimal strain would be different than yours.  My recovery is particular to me; yours might be better; but measure worse relative to your trends.

I have had this over a year, and I have continued to pay for it, because it is valuable information.  When I ride my bike, I can measure my heart rate and strain in real time.  So when I reach my optimal strain, I can ride a bit easier on the way home.

By the way, the Whoop strap was developed by a science guy who also played top level squash at an Ivy school.  He wondered why sometimes he played better than expectations, and some days felt tired on the court and couldn't play as well as he was supposed to.  So he decided to come up with measures of how hard his training was, and how good his recovery was over night.

They call it a "strap" because they don't like being compared to smart watches. So that is really a part of their branding. Don't tell Whoop people they make a smart watch, haha

They really market themselves to sporty types---a lot of people swear by it.

They are a cool company, very passionate about what they do

Thats cool!

I just put in the work, alternate strength and HIIT days, eat and sleep properly, rinse repeat.

The key is crafting sustainable workout plans and diet that you can do for years and years, day after day, and measure progression.

I’ll never get a fitness band, just not my style. But appreciate the data driven approach! Anything that keeps you busting out the work, is money and time well spent.

I wore a Whoop 3.0 for 18 months.

The recovery score was a joke. I called it the "WRNG" - the "Whoop Random Number Generator."

There were days it wouldn't detect when I woke up so I'd adjust my wake-up time by like 11 minutes… and the score would change 30 points for my "recovery."

It was nearly useless.
