Do you compliment someone's swing at the driving range?

Just hit some balls with my gf at the range. Someone was talking to me about my swing. 

 

She made a comment after that she hates when people watch me hit balls and never say anything. Said they should 'own it'

 

Ive personally never complimented anyone at the range or chatted unless engaged.

 

I'm pretty sure 95% of people are at the range to work on swing and not be social.

If I ever went to the range ... And if someone actually watched me ... I don't think "compliment" would describe how they talked about my swing.

Warm up before golf is different, seems to be a lot of people there just to whack a few balls and discuss anything and everything….

What does this mean? What are they owning? She thinks you're awesome and people should be patting you on the back? You draw crowds?

Odd comment.  Not sure if she is jealous or why she thinks people should stop and watch you.  Most people can tell the better players and ones more serious about their game.  I only talk to people I know and it is not about their swing.  I don't engage with strangers unless they something first.  Usually there to work on my game, not to be social.  I'm not really a social person anyway.

I have. I was hitting balls at a small driving range next to a young lady, obviously a college golfer, who was absolutely striping it. Her swing was a thing of beauty. I was hitting it good too so before I left I watched her hit a few more. When she stopped for a second I complimented her and asked how she came about her game. Turns out her dad owned the range. We had a great conversation about college golf in my day, the mid 70s, to today. She was very thankful as she knew the compliments and encouragement wasn't coming from a hacker.

The only time I even look towards other people at the range is to make sure they are far enough away to not receive an unfortunate slice from me.

I view the range as the I do the gym. I am there to work, not to socialize. Those that are there to socialize, I don't want to be around.

Honestly ... The driving range is like the single's bar of the golf world. I'm only there if a friend tricked me into going, and once I'm in, I ain't making eye contact and I'm pretending to be mute.

I have told 2 people in my life time that their swing was awesome.

Both times, you can hear the ball being punished over and over and over.

 

I do it after I am done hitting so not to have a long conversation, just pay the compliment and leave.

I've had a few people saying something about my swing both good and bad but whatever.

 

I've only told 1 person about their swing, it was a girl and honestly it was just a smooth swing, like Couples would compliment on how smooth it was.

The only compliment I ever gave to a stranger on the range was to a 15yr old kid the other day swinging a full set of mint BeCu Ping Eye2's.  His swing sucked, but I'm a WRX'er...   what do I care about trivial things like actual golfing ability?

Sorry, I will add a little more context. The girlfriend is new to the sport. She is a little self conscious of course and is worried people are watching her etc. I tried to explain no one cares and everyone is just getting loose or working on things.

She insisted that she see's people watching others all the time and why don't more people just talk about it/be social. 

That is really all that inspired the post. We were having dinner and had different takes. Sorry for the way it came across.

Obviously she is clearly right about people watching. People LOVE to compare themselves to others.
