Better players: how often do you try a shaft-head combo that you just can't hit?

iron shafts, I've tried them all. TT s200 works

I guess I was the only one on the planet that could not hit the Ping G400 driver

I couldn't either. For whatever reason, it spun north of 3000 rpms no matter what shaft we tried. Terrible. Callaway, TM, Cobr, Titleist all worked pretty well that day but I couldn't get the Ping to do anything but spin up. Golf is weird.

I tried Mc 501's with MMT shafts and lasted a measly week.  I knew immediately.  I truly wanted that combo to work but just terrible for me.  After that I tried Apex Pro 21 w/MMT and also could not jive.  Before that I was Srixon z785's Modus 105 with much success.  Finally, I moved to zx7's with modus 105 with even better results.  For me, weight and feel are very important.  The Srixon/Modus combo will be very hard to knock out of the bag.  I'm about to try Apex CB's with Modus bc my zx7 faces are finally starting to wear.   I generally know within a few swings and if I'm on the fence a few rounds.  I can feel the quality of strike.

Shafts that I do not get on with.  Ventus Black, Blue or any HZRDUS shaft.

I get on very well with white profiles like 1K White, Diamana GT, TR Red and Modus shafts.  What do they all have in Common?  Firm handles!

C taper. Most any other counterbalance shaft .  Never liked anything Hzrdus and for some reason I loathe ADDI in a driver. But I’ve loved many 3 woods and hybrids with one.

ventus driver shaft.  Just don’t get on with any of them.  I’ve owned them all.

steel fiber iron shafts.  Hate the feel.  Happens often with a driver or 3 wood. I either love it first swing. Or it’s never going to work.

thought of another. 99 % of all driving irons out there.  They feel like hitting a rock with a hoe handle.  No sweet spot.  They’ll Go. But the feeling is horrible.

Which driver shafts work for you then? I'm also not a fan of any of them, but am on the search for a few shafts to tinker with over winter.

Every time I find myself in a fitting, one of the first things the fitter tries to put in my hands with a 109mph driver swing speed is a heavy x-stiff shaft, and I inevitably find myself losing my balance and very nearly completely whiffing at the ball with any shaft heavier than 65g in my driver. I can't do it. I might be fast, but that's because I get speed out of my flexibility, not actual strength.

The good fitters learn what to do quickly, the bad ones tire me out within 40-50 swings.

Usually whiteboard and some blue board profiles. Tensie white and blue.  The old diamana white 73x was a favorite . I like the kbs TD.  Accra rpg 472 . And almost always 68-75 grams. Current aha moment happened when I got the graphite design m9003 7x.  I think the main deal I need is a shaft that loads and unloads in a way that is easily felt.  I tend to throw my body at a boardy shaft.  And that throws it all out of whack.

If it’s the correct spec, practically never.

There are combinations that won’t give me great results, that I need to swing differently with, or I won’t enjoy, but I’d say none that I couldn’t physically hit 🤷🏻‍♂️

It’s one of my pet hates, people saying they just can’t hit certain brands of things. I get that the mind is a powerful thing, but people don’t realise how small the differences in clubs, both technically and in performance/results really are.

If you give me a butt-stiff, tip-soft shaft I’ll probably discard it pretty quickly, but I could still hit it.

I did a thing with an OEM years back where all the shafts were plain gloss black. People went with feel and results, and the shafts they ended up with were usually quite random, in terms of model and even flex.

I've found that any of the newer irons with extra weight in the toes, that tungsten plug on those Cobra King Forged MB/CB combos from a few years ago? That extra weight in the toe makes me feel off balance and I don't deliver the club head the way I normally would,  T100S , new Cobra King Tours , all struggled. I understand the why, to get more COG to the center supposedly, but it's something I'm mindful of when looking at irons these days.

I'm by no means a good golfer but I have had plenty of very good rounds. I usually go with Regular flex SteelFibers shafts for my irons and I get them soft stepped. For my Driver VA Composites are very nice but now I'm leaning to Graphite Design as I really like their penetrating flight along with good feel and they have a nice selection of shafts

Too often for this guy.  Sad thing is, I know what works for me, yet I'm always tinkering.  For example, I know that a low spin head with a low/low shaft is what works for me yet, I went down the rabbit hole trying to find something higher launching with more ball speed the better part of the last 2 years.  I decided to go back to the meat and potato setup I know that works for me, and my game off the tee with driver has improved which has always been the weakest part of my game.  Every other club has stayed in the bag except with lob wedge which needed to be replaced because the grooves on my old one was starting to wear down after a decade of on and off use.
