Playing the wedges that match your set

I bet about 80- 90 % people here play wedges that are different from their irons.  ie Set wedges aren't any good. Other than a Gap wedge not many makers make wedges within an iron line, no i230 sand iron, no Titleist t150 sand Iron,, etc.   

I think ping is the only one who did it well but that was some time ago (Eye 2).   Seems there is a line between players sets and well, you know, others.

I’d agree.  I’ve played the copper mizunos with my Nike blades and my Artisans for the last few years. Eventually I’ll go for a wedge fitting at Artisan next year when I’m down in Fort Worth for business.

I would suggest one's wedge set-up at address would help determine this. If a golfer uses mainly square-face address with little or no hand manipulation, the set wedges might work out quite well. Set wedges tend to be mid-bounce.

 

For those that usually create one shot at a time per situation, specialty wedges might be preferred.

 

Also, some of the PD and Player's iron sets stop at PW or AW, so that's a consideration.

My wedges don’t even match each other, much less my irons.

Ping G2 for years and I had them down to SW. In fact,  I played the SW for several more years after I got new irons. 

 

I like my irons  be the same at least through the traditional PW loft.  Which today means at least through GW/AW. Then I'll take a SW and that's usually it. 

 

Also,  loft creep is a marketing ploy to sell hybrids at one end (because that 19 deg 4i is unusable) and wedges at the other (because you're 41 deg PW is an 8 iron).  Though at this point many flagship irons cost more per club (over $200) than premium wedges. But still,  they've convinced average golfers that they need a stable of 6 or 8 wedges of various lofts and grinds (as if that makes f*** all difference to anyone 5 or above) to select from based on the conditions of where they are playing today.

As you mentioned, my wedges have been different than my irons since the Ping Eye2 days.  Never seen anyone replicate what they did through the high lofted wedges.

The gap wedge between my PW and sand wedge is a set wedge from a completely iron set. I have Mizuno MP4s in the irons, then a Srixon Z745 A wedge, and an Artisan 56* (followed by a 2021 Vokey forged 60*).

 

I really should try to find a set of the Z745s in decent shape.

Gapping was perfect on G2 wedges.

3.5 degrees pitching to gap wedge and 3.5 degrees gap to sand.

Sounds like me..I have a 50 Vokey, 54 Mizuno and a 58 Callaway.

I currently play the new T100 3-PW irons and Vokey SM9 F52/12 & M58/8 wedges.  Also have Vokey SM6 F52/8 & M58/8 with MMT 125TX 8 iron shafts. 

 

The last time I played wedges that matched my irons was in 2003, when I ordered a custom set of 1025M blades 2i-LW by MacGregor.  Still have them in storage, outstanding irons and wedges.

Only when I had Speedblades, G30s, and going to try it with Taylormade QI irons, 5-LW. Otherwise usually Vokeys.

With my Ping G15's I went to 50 degree U wedge and had a 56 degree Ping Tour S. No with my PXG Xcor2's I go 6 to Lob Wedge. Performance of Sand and Lob Wedge have been excellent.

Very few sets of "players" irons have a matching GW or SW. If they did, I would play them, as I play full swing shots with SW all the time.
