How did Peter Malnati get to be a Player Director?

Most don't know what Jay Monahan's job consists of.....

Managing Billions and searching for added revenue for the members. The plan all along was to berate the threatening tour and figure out a way to secure revenue from said tour.

Seem to be working out pretty well to me.

I think the issue with Jay is in raising those billions, they have been targeted and directed to a select few. No doubt that much of it is deserved, and are your prize horses, but when those horses only play 12 times a year, you can't forget the mules that pull the wagon the majority of the time. Even some of the prize horses were neglected to be heard so LIV exists. Like him or not, he mismanaged his product and now has a major competitor.

How quickly people forget. The wraparound season was created for the backend of the tour. The wraparound season was in effect from 2013-2023. Before that, the Tour concentrated on the front end. Everything is rotational.

The PGATs product is not in competition with the nonsensical LIV format. IMO

The PGAT is a business ......LIV is an exhibition League with no expectation of financial return.

PS/ There's a thread for LIV comments, we can take it over there.

*Taylor Gooch not in the field for the Valspar

I love the legs on the Taylor Gooch astersisk comments.   While I agree the Players wasn't as deep a field as it could have been with pro golf in such a state of flux there are plenty of asterisks to go around.  But you compete against those that are in the field when tee off.  Every victory is hard earned.

There's a reason 2021, 2022, and 2023 set records on the Tour for first time winners and it's not because the fields are getting stronger.

How many LIV events were there in 2021?

And more fact checking re some various years and first time winners, pretty strong fields those years. So what about these "records" on Tour you mention?

2002 - 18

2010 - 15

2011 -  14

2016 - 14

Absolutely! All of a sudden people are worried about who's not in a tournament. Agreed, you can only compete against the players put before you. There's no "coulda, woulda, shoulda" in professional golf.

I follow golf as close as anyone I know and had no idea who Peter Malnati was until they announced the new leadership structure.  For some reason I had thought he was a long-since retired pro (maybe I was thinking of Peter Senior).

I had to go to his Wiki to find out he's just the lowest of low level journeymen - one win 8 years ago, has only played in 3 majors and never made the cut.

I was a bit taken aback by his comments that "“At its core, like, players have no business running the PGA Tour" which I get from a day-to-day perspective in finding tournament partners, etc, but unlike a sports franchise where there is an owner and players, there is no "owner" of the PGA Tour.  You'd think a player would want players to have as much stake in the game as possible.

How does a guy with this thin of a resume rise to being essentially one of the 6-10 most important people influencing the future direction of the Tour?

You are taking his words out of context?

Lowest of low level journeymen?  He is the poster child of all the pro's out there chasing the dream and not giving up.   Most of us here would give anything to have 2 wins on the PGA Tour.

His 25 minute interview after his win was insightful & articulate. Not bad for a guy that was coming down off a 4 1/2 hour adrenalin rush.  He spoke off the cuff better than than most players I have seen over the years.

The tour is lucky to have him as a players rep.

I watched an interview this morning with Peter Malnati and now I know why he's on the board of directors of both the PGAT and PGAT Enterprise. Malnati gave more sensible info than JM without giving their strategy away. Malnati is a bright young man, and he sees things from both sides,....... the haves and the have-nots.

Malnati is very refreshing. IMO

I said this in the other thread, but I  found Ryan Lavner's comments on Peter disgraceful and below the role of golf journalism. I respect Ryan and other's have ideas about the "word tour" but it was uncalled for slamming Peter who just won.

He was being a dick on the golf channel pod about Peter's statements about the merger and said he was the type of player that would be cut under the world tour. Read off his Fedex cup finishes over the year. I think it was Aaron Baddeley he also attacked.  Putting down underdogs on the PGA tour, is the type of country club BS that I do not support on any level. If Ryan thinks a world tour with 70 players, thats fine but no need to slam people making the best out of today's tour.

Ive had enough of Ryan, he's full of himself. Same guy who talked about losing 12 pro-v1's off the tee himself.  He can grow up to be a talking head , I prefer humble PGA tour players over BS artists.

Reality in nearly every walk of life...there are a great many people behind the scenes, talking, pulling strings and influencing direction, yet the public has never heard their names, much less who they are as people.

I think its ahistorical to magically pretend at any era the top 25 players or so dominated the sport. Its a sport with a long calendar and to fill up these fields, you need more than 100 people every year lol Rory is full of s*** that its not cut throat, I watched the Fedex cup fall!

Again, I respect everyone having views on the merger but dont make things up.  Say what you mean, if you want 14 events and 70 players fine.
