How did Peter Malnati get to be a Player Director?

I'm no Jay fanboy but the PGAT has billions in assets and pulls in billions in revenues annually - $18M seems like a bargain if you compare other CEO salaries of billion dollar companies.

Not to mention that he's actually around long enough to have to answer for his decisions. Unlike most, he doesn't get to institute a bunch of questionable practices for short-term profit and leave with a huge bonus only for everything to fall apart. $18M a year with accountability is a lot better than $5M a year, three $50M annual bonuses, then getting away scot-free why Rome burns.

Well, he is out there procuring Billions for the Membership. 🙂

Correct - but he was leading the charge banning and shaming players who left the PGA for LIV.

And if you read the entire document, they do EXCEPTIONAL work for charities and to grow the game. But, point being is Jay was getting his $18M while trying to intimidate players who were making much less and wanted to even explore going to LIV.

Peter is a phenomenal guy - met him when he won the (I think back then Web.com) now Korn Ferry tour event in Knoxville. He came across as geniune and grateful.

Most don't know what Jay Monahan's job consists of.....

Managing Billions and searching for added revenue for the members. The plan all along was to berate the threatening tour and figure out a way to secure revenue from said tour.

Seem to be working out pretty well to me.

He never said anything even close to "shaming" anyone - what little he said when that all got started and as it has progressed as been pretty measured and carefully said.  That's just made up.

No players were banned, at least in the sense that word is usually tossed about - but Tour membership rules those players were part of were enforced, some were adopted and some players were sanctioned which yes, included, for example, a year of ineligibility from any unauthorized event. Some resigned. LOL, no "charge" was led, but there needed to be consequences.

For those who know what they're looking at, here's some fun reading. Jay made over $18M in 2022!!!

PGA financials - 2022

Give him a raise. I don't like every decision (ex, these low cut/no cut events), but its pretty damn hard to argue has hasn't done a good job. Even when faced with an irrational actor.

I'll withhold judgement until I hear about his art collection.

A sagacious decision.  Most are etchings and watercolor.   His collection includes pieces from the likes of Cihan Polat, Susan Vera Clarke and Annabelle Shelton.

I hereby deem his collection -  very extensive.

I follow golf as close as anyone I know and had no idea who Peter Malnati was until they announced the new leadership structure.  For some reason I had thought he was a long-since retired pro (maybe I was thinking of Peter Senior).

I had to go to his Wiki to find out he's just the lowest of low level journeymen - one win 8 years ago, has only played in 3 majors and never made the cut.

I was a bit taken aback by his comments that "“At its core, like, players have no business running the PGA Tour" which I get from a day-to-day perspective in finding tournament partners, etc, but unlike a sports franchise where there is an owner and players, there is no "owner" of the PGA Tour.  You'd think a player would want players to have as much stake in the game as possible.

How does a guy with this thin of a resume rise to being essentially one of the 6-10 most important people influencing the future direction of the Tour?

But not usually right after you call him a non-nut-finding chump who has no business looking for nuts!

Benefactor of weak field like most of the winners not names Scottie Scheffler this year.

Seems like a good guy.  Just completely irrelevant to the broader business of the game.

You bitter cause someone “irrelevant” won a golf tournament?

Time for introspection, KS
