Premium Golf Ball Suggestions

Hi all,

 

I am looking at doing some ball testing. I am not a fast player, my driver SS = 91-94 mph and my 7i SS = 77-80 mph.

 

I do not hit down on the ball much with irons; therefore have very low spin. However, I hit up well on the driver around 4-5 degrees. 

 

Can somebody recommend a golf ball that will spin off the irons, but not excessively spin off the driver? So far this is my list:

I would try the TP5. Sounds like more spin would be a good thing for you and Golf.com rated the TP5 best in spin for 95 mph or less. TP5X was 2nd and then ProV1X 3rd.

I find the Vice Pro & Pro Plus to be affordable options to the ones in your list.

Do you have access to a launch monitor? If so, you can input those numbers on the Balnamic app and it will give you recommendations on your data and personal preferences.

Generally you're in a tricky spot. A lot of the spinnier premium balls are higher compression. At high speeds all balls tend to be low spin off the driver. At average swing speeds you can start to see some separation in spin off the driver.

 

I've spent plenty of time in the low 90s with driver and I also tend to be fairly up with driver and pretty neutral with irons.

 

In those situations I've always found Pro V1X to be my favorite ball to add iron spin and still give max performance off the tee with Chrome Soft X as probably a second favorite. The caveat is if start to get a little cutty with driver at those swing speeds I tend to get more spin off the driver than I want. If that's not an issue for you I'd go with either of those.

 

Vice Pro Plus is another good value option to consider.

 

I haven't hit TP5X since the old low spin version. I know they added spin in recent models but I would not think it's enough to get you where you want with irons off tests I've seen.

 

I haven't hit a more recent BXS but I know I found the older versions really good for iron spin but a touch more than I'd like vs PV1X / CSX off driver.

 

I don't know about the new Z Star Diamond but I really played the old version for a few rounds and am still using some stock I had left as my simulator ball. It's not a particularly high spin ball off the irons for me, is quite low with driver, but does well with wedges (my speed has picked up recently so I'm not the best comparison for speed at the moment so don't read too much into that)

What don't you like about the Maxfli Tour X?  They are really good balls.  Other than the markings being too larger for me, they are the only second to Pro v1 and -Pro v1 for me.  They are one of the few instances in life where low price and high performance are together in one package.

 

If you want more iron spin, you might have to switch to a non-X line.

 

The new Mizuno balls are worth a look - got a few free sleeves at the golf show and they are quite nice.

 

Left dash Pro v1x is definitely worth a try if you hit up on the ball.  They add about 8-10 yards or driver distance for me.  They feel firm which some people hate, but I don't care if it feels like a pool table ball if it performs.  They still iron and green side spin like a Pro v1.

Vice Pro, Wilson Triad/Staff Model (old version), Srixon Z Star & TP5 (old version). For iron spin look to non X/plus lines as mentioned above.

I really enjoy the Maxfil Tour X that I am using. I have $600 in pro shop credit and I was going to stock up on some balls for the upcoming season. 

 

My shop carries TP5/TP5x, PV1, PV1x, -PV1x, Chrome Tour, Chrome Tour X, and Bridgestone balls....so those are really my only options.

Try the Prov1x for sure. It's spin and launch throughout the bag is noticeably higher than the standard Prov1. Although it's higher compression, that shouldn't stop you from trying it.

For my game this describes the Maxfli Tour X perfectly.   Now my SS is a bit higher and I spin my irons a fair amount, it might not fit your game the same way.   

 

Maybe the regular Maxfli Tour or Srixon Z-Star might fill the bill a bit better  at mid 90s SS off the driver. 

 

One other I would consider is the Bridgestone BXS from what you describe....

Z star diamond is a great ball, spins more than you’d expect. Srixon will occasionally have them on sale 2 dozen for $70

Chrome Tour X.  Plenty of spin with irons and low spin with driver.  Highest ball speeds out of all the balls you listed that I've tested.  Next would be TP5x.  Doesn't spin as much as CTX but higher launch across the board and was second in ball speed.  Both balls have plenty of stopping power with irons and spin quite a bit around the greens.

Get a box of regular Pro V1.  See if you like them.  They are low driver spin and excellent iron spin.  The x and left dash spin less off of the driver, but also the irons and they are more firm.

 

If the Pro V1 spins too much with the D, then move to X.  If that spins too much then try the left dash.  You will not have to use the X in a Titleist to keep the driver spin down.  For me the difference in the Pro v1 and the X is in launch with the X launching higher.  Since you hit up on the D already, you likely do not need this so try the regular Pro V1.

 

Buy a few sleeves, or a box, at a time and save the bulk of that pro shop credit until you are sure that you like a ball.

I tinker so much, always hoping that I’ll find a cheaper distance ball that performs well enough. Started with a Titleist Velocity today. Ditched it after one hole. Just didn’t like the feel at all, for the umptenth time. Went TP5. 2021 version. Felt good, but launched high for me off driver. I’m likely going back to the ProV1 after a burn the last 9 TP5s. I need yellow, I just like the TM yellow over the Titleist yellow. But, I’m wondering if the new Chrome Tour will work? Ugh!

...or max out on Pro v1, sell them on the marketplace and go to Dick's and stock up on Maxfli Tour X.  🙂

Honestly, you're playing one of the best "budget" balls there is on the market. The Maxfli Tour X is one of the most durable, most consistent, best feeling, and best performing balls out there. I'm partial to them because I have my personal best round with them but, that was when my bag was a lot different. Different balls will be have differently with other setups. 

I'd recommend you still with the Maxfli Tour but, give the Tour and the Tour S a chance.

I would suggest V1x or a somewhat equivalent ball (Zstar diamond, Chrome tour X, Vice pro plus).

Almost no good quality balls today spin “excessively” off the driver. Just find the urethane ball that best serves your needs in the rest of your game and its driver performance will be fine. At worst you might give up a couple yards versus an ideal driver-optimized ball, maybe not even that.
