Any one still Rocking Old School 390-400 cc driver

I am so much more comfortable with a small headed driver. Thinking of going back to an R510tp or R7Quad TP.

2questions:

1) Anyone do something similar

2) any thoughts on the clubs above?

I play a 975D at 260cc. It doesn’t take long for your eyes to adjust to the size, which is still quite big in relation to a little golf ball. Plenty of room on the face for playability and the options you listed are great ones. Go for it.

This 390Cc to 400CC head size is excellent and suitable for all skill level players, from beginner to Tour pro. The major brands should be offering this head size driver, but they don't because

'bigger is better' is an easy sell.

An old Nike Ignite 410 for me.

It still looks like a balloon on the end of a bamboo cane to me, but it's an acceptably smaller look at address with its deep face, and it has the nearest thing to a proper pear shape of any 'modern' driver. As a natural drawer of the ball, I often struggle to turn over the bigger, more modern heads, and I like the fact that the Nike gives me a flight that consistently falls left at the top of the flight. I'm a high spin player, so a bit of loft (10.5 degrees) and a tip stiff shaft - actually the only driver shaft I've played in the last 20 years, in an almost Stenson-like show of devotion) - work really well for me, in giving me a decent launch angle and peak height while keeping the the spin off. It's pretty much optimal in terms of the launch angle/spin/ball speed metrics, so it goes about as far as I'm ever going to hit a driver, despite being comedically vintage. I'm an old fart, used to gauging things by eye, but technology has confirmed what my senses and instincts tell me about the flight and the distance and dispersion relative to more modern options. I'm not playing proper golf these days, so being right on the ragged edge of performance metrics doesn't matter so much now. Whatever fractions I could gain in driver performance with a 600 quid bit of kit can be nullified in a single, clumsy short-side miss with a 7-iron approach.

My back-up driver (I cracked the face of a second Nike) is a Titleist 905S with the same shaft: a Grafalloy Blue. It's a similar 'compact' size and  performs similarly, and ticks the same boxes from a performance standpoint, but I get better results with the Nike.

Using an R510TP now. Have used the SQ 460 for a few years, about 8 years ago.

The 510 is a true deep face driver, flattish trajectory with lots of kick on landing. The SQ is higher launching & more forgiving. Find the R510 to be more accurate. I love the driver but it is a tougher club from a forgiveness perspective than most all larger Ti heads. On the screws long as anything I ever hit. I'm using it now because it's easiest swinging with a heavily damaged shoulder. Just bought a SQ 425 on eBay for giggles.

  Big fan of the 975D.

You must not be THAT old. I had to give up the 905S/Blue nearly 15 years ago. Superb stick.
