Why? Then they are just playing out of fairway bunkers all day and there is no penalty for missing the fairway.

It’s not a matter of difficulty, it’s a matter of randomness.  Two guys can hit almost exactly the same miss.  One has an easy recovery, the other is unplayable.  I can’t see how that’s a good design element of a golf course.

its called a hazard for a reason

But it’s not a typical hazard; and it’s everywhere.  There aren’t many courses where you can easily have an unplayable lie three feet from the fairway’s edge.  That said, the fairways are pretty wide, so guys missing these fairways a lot probably deserve whatever they get.

It’s not a matter of having native grasses or not.  It’s the volume of it.  This course takes it way over the top.

It’s like my pro told me when I complained about some new bunkers - “Duct, don’t hit it there”.

It's fun to watch for us, but I agree with your premise.

The field is hitting 67% of the fairways (so far) and when you miss them it's basically in the lap of the gods whether you have a shot or not. Basically, more luck is in the equation much like some British Opens.

Rory is driving magnificently, so well on a tough set-up that you can't imagine he will be any more than 2-3 shots away by the Sunday evening. And I think the way he putts is okay on fast greens, he's a decent lag putter and 25 feet to 2 feet for par often does the job in US Opens.

But I just don't trust the consistency of his wedges and short irons to win this thing, could see him miss a few greens when the pressure is on.

Might be able to double that come the end play.

IIRC, the Women's US Open cut went from like +4 to +8 by the end of Friday.  Even right down to one of the last players missing a putt, moving it from +7 to +8 and letting in half a dozen players.

Ping G425 MAX Flat Big + (Grand Bassara 29R)

Adams Idea Pro A12 Proto 16* and 20* (Adams Ultralight 50 Ladies)

Honma Rose Proto 4-9  (Bassara 50HI)

ProtoC P2 46.5* (Bassara 50HI)

Ping Glide 4 52* and 58* (BAssara 50HI)

McGregor Bobby Grace VFoil M5K Putter

Besides loving the look of the native brown and sand, the native grass is actually more fair or at least exciting than the typical 6-8” Oakmont or Winged Foot rough. There a player uniformly has no shot other than a sand wedge out.

Here, sometimes a lucky lie results, or better yet, a semi-good lie tempting the pro to go for it!

Have you played The Old Course?  It's a matter or inches with the contour that creates drastically different outcomes.

Why is it so hard to understand for people? Hit it in a different spot, take spin off, add spin, hit it higher, hit it lower. None of these are random. If your ball didn't end up where you wanted it to, you didn't hit the shot the hole required. Period. No 2 shots are ever identical. It's not unfair and it's not random. It's golf.

So if they put evenly spaced holes our there in the rough where half the balls stayed on hard dirt and the other half fell through a hole and ran back to the teebox, you’d be okay with that level of randomness in a round of golf?

You understand that there are degrees of randomness that can be introduced into a golf course from minor to ridiculous, right?

This course introduces very high degree of randomness, both in the rough and the greens, relative to other courses.  That’s all I was saying.  And yes, to a point, that’s golf.  To a point.  I love steep penalties for missing fairways (and would love it if the native grass was everywhere in the rough), but not as big a fan of the rough and greens being Russian roulette.  It’s great to watch for entertainment value though.

Point taken.  The randomness is why I like this type of native area.  It's a fun 300 yard walk with anticipation to see what you get.  Plus more skilled guys can pull off the shots easier.  I prefer it to boring rough.

I really don’t miss seeing Tyrell Hatton’s whining and carrying on.  He’s back in our lives for one day and he’s already wildly gesticulating when he misses short putts, as if the earth moved and threw his perfect putt off line.  What a tool.

And the announcers LOVE him. I don't get that at all. Guy is a gigantic man-baby.
