Full disclosure, I am in fact bating you because all the data around his putting and putter usage shows the following:

1) He's never been particularly strong inside 5 feet regardless of year or putter
2) All his best seasons putting have been with a Spider of some sort
3) His worst seasons inside 5 feet are pretty evenly split between all putter types
4) His best season inside 5 feet is with a Spider, his second best was with a blade

If Rory could be fixed by a putter swap we'd have seen it already, and we kinda did, everything improved year over year when he went away from blades/mallets, because he is and always has been a volatile streaky putter.

IMHo @rukahs ... Rory is better-off sticking to this putter, and building reps/ confidence with the Spider

... with a lower-MOI blade/fastback, those Rory 'major yips' might be even worse!

 

You're obviously a Rory fan too ... i hope he laps the field at Troon!

A couple of weeks ago, I  missed 4 from inside 4 feet,  on the front 9....

And I’m guessing that the greens you were putting on weren’t running at 13…

 

The putt he missed on 18 was a HARD putt; he played it well outside left, and it still broke all the way across the hole and missed right.  The first one is the one he’d like to have back, but I think BCD missed that exact same putt.

 

McIlroy didn’t win b/c of the two short putts, for sure, and I’m guessing he’s inconsolable today.  But BCD’s par on 18 was other-worldly given the situation.

I thought that stat was wild when I first saw that mentioned, but it's actually 3' not 4', and as it turns out that isn't an uncommon stat. 17 other guys have the same streak going currently and some years see as many or more finish the entire season without missing 3' and in. Including Will Zalatoris of all people. It's almost like they're REALLY good. 😅

It's a fun stat actually, since they started accurately tracking full seasons in the modern era, no one has ever finished with a 100% make rate on 3'-4' putts, but LOTS of guys have missed just one.

We see him go back to the blade about once per year and it usually doesn't last very long. His putting is fine with the Spider. People miss short putts from time to time. It happens - just brutal when it costs you a US Open.

I think Rory's putting is just fine, he's streaky yes, that putt on 18 was brutally hard, the one on 16 is the costly one. I think his obvious biggest strength is driving the ball, however, I am not sure that swing translates to good iron play and I think that putts too much pressure on having to putt great when the premium in the majors is more on iron play, proximity and GIRs. He also has a lot of scar tissue having to essentially win a major again for the first time.

 

I'd like to see him get it done, and the more he puts himself there he'll breakthrough again, and likely go on a tear and nab a few in a short span. Overall though I think he putts better with the Spider. If he hit his irons like Scottie, his putter is a none issue and he probably wins this by 8.

I think calling off the divorce has done him well. He was swinging it so well. Just a little unlucky that Bryson hat some luck and obviously the skillset to not get punished too much for missing that many fairways. While he made Bogey everytime he missed the fairway it seemed.

And of course, the nerves did not help his short putts I guess.

I do like Bryson and would love to see him more on a weekly basis, but I was wanting Rory to win this really badly. This week he would have deserved it.

These guys all miss. But I agree...it was painful to watch and he had no confidence...I mean why would he, he knew he was going to blow it. 

 

I think he just needs a mental adjustment or some way mentally to free his mind.

The only thing that is holding Rory back from more majors (aside from unbelievable pressure and expectations, marital stress, a changing golfing landscape that involved him becoming the sacrificial lamb, 10 years of major scar tissue, and an increasingly competitive, young field of competitors headlined by the most dominant player since Tiger) is putter torque.

Rory was not great with the Cameron near the end.  There's a reason that he moved on from it and improved his strokes gained.  Camerons rarely win a major these days.  Also look how much better Scottie got when he dropped his Cameron blade.

Last Cameron Major win was 2022 Open by Cam Smith.
