Titleist Tour Balata. I like the Low Trac ones the best. Spalding Tour Edition spun like crazy but made a funny sound when you putted with them. Maxfli Balata flew farther and straighter than a Titleist Balata but it had that funny dimple pattern and it didnt roll well on the greens. It was a real accomplishment back in those days if you could play with a balata ball and not smile it. Those covers made the present day Pro V's and spin milled wedges look durable. And after you hit it once or twice it changed from white to a yellowish color. And the rock flites had high, regular and low trajectory. And gosh were they hard. I can remember trying to lay up on a par 5 and hitting a 4 iron from about 250 and the Rockflite hit a hard place in the fairway and it bounced over the green. Balls are much better today.

I use to play the titliest 100 however in early morning fall-spring they hit like a rock and I usually was greeted with a "smile." I never like the faultless and topflight also was a rock but lasted forever. Dont forget the dupont hex dimple designed.

I was in high school 15 years ago playing on the school team. When I had money I played Titliest Professional 100. Most of the time I played the Ultra Tour Balata 100, if you cut the cover on them while playing you could send the ball in and they would send you a free sleeve. I never did cut one though, they were super soft but very durable. I tried the titliest tour balata 100s but they wouldn't last long enough for me on a high school budget.

I found a 15ball pack of TC2's (never been open) when cleaning out my garage recently

Also an unopened 3 pack of Molitors and a dozen Maxfli XS Tours and a bunch of other golf stuff I forgot I had.

It was a huge fad for me, but I loved the Bullet Balatas. Those things spun like mad. Extremely undurable though. I also liked the older Maxfli HT Balata.

I probably played Wilson Ultras or Ultra 500 Tours the most, followed by the Precept EV Extra Spin (00 of course).

I am not sure if it was 15 years ago, but I fell in love with the Strata when it came out. Spun good for a solid ball at the time, didn't go out of round, and was still soft on the putter.

Of coure the Titleist Tour Balata and Professional were always an option, but I always gravitated to the high spinning (a joke compared to now) solid balls, as I could get more play out of them. Balatas were always fun on par 3's though.

I still remember when the Nike Tour Accuracy came out and turned the ball world on it's head (god I loved the TA TW ball) but that wasn't 15 years ago.

When I first started playing I used whatever I found, or from the .50 cent bin of balls on the counter that were dug out of the pond. Usually Pinnacles, top Flites, or Ultras. To my great shame I made my first and only hole in one of my life with a pinnacle. As I got better I tended to gravitate towards the Titleist DT's. I really loved those balls and played them for years. The Tour Edition did spin like crazy and I remember going through a few dozen of those for a season or so. There was another ball on the market that was very similar to the Tour Edition it was made by Ram, but I cannot remember what it was called????? Anyway it spun even more than the tour edition if you can believe it. The old Tour Balatas were great balls, but unlike the Pro V you needed to be a good ball striker to use them. The covers would cut very easy and they did not go as far as the other balls. The Maxfli HT was maybe the best balata ball ever made, it was long, it spun, felt great and was a little more durable than the tour balata if I remember correctly. Hogan also made a decent ball for a while, both in balata and surlyn, but I really dont remember buying them too often.

My vote: Titleist DT, Long, good feel, spun enough unless the greens were realy hard and fast, wound ball with surlyn cover at a good price. I would compare them to the Bridgestone e5, NXT.

Titleist DT 90 or Maxfli Blue Max.

First dozen golf balls I ever bought were a cheap - $6.32 at K-Mart - Arnold Palmer model... Surlyn cover in a green box with Arnie's picture on it. Each ball had the Palmer name and a little drawing of an umbrella - I thought that was cool.

Titleist Low Trajectory (90 compression).

Hard to forget, as I played in a charity event in Orlando with Payne Stewart....and he was playing the same ball.

(Actually in retrospect, that was more like 1989, so 19 years ago.....damn!!)

I had to really think about this one. I think my favorite was the Precept EV Extra Spin. I never liked the Titleist Professional as the ball wouldn't last one round.

I remember really liking the Acushnet Club Specials, but I think that was a lot longer than 15 years ago!!

Club Specials were from the early to mid 1970's - I remember playing them as they were about the cheapest balls around. I was only 12 and a beginner. My parents would buy me a box of x-outs for my birthday every year.

They would cut as I recall but not as easily as some others.

After that came harder covered balls like the Starflite and Canada Cup.

I remember playing the old 384 Tour Balata. That thing would shred in your pocket. I also remember playing with balls that were well out of round, lining up the smile with where I'd hit it cos someone told me that that reduced the effect of it being out of round. Then the Tour 90s for a while, then, after Faldo won the open with one, I shamelessly copied him and played a Rextar promodel for a while. Played pretty well with it too. Then onto the professional and the prestige, which was probably about 8 or 9 years ago I guess, before the Pro v1 came out.

To my great shame I made my first and only hole in one of my life with a pinnacle.

YOUR SHAME?!?!? Nothing to be ashamed off, I don't have a hole in one yet! :man_in_love:

I know, I know, it is just when I pull out an old scuffed up Pinnacle to "show off" as my hole in one ball it takes a little of the luster off of the whole deal. Dont get me wrong I know that some people can play fore life and never get one, so I do feel lucky in that regard. Didn't mean to to sound ungreatful.

This may have been more than 15 years ago too. I was playing K28's. I think Dunlop made them. Also liked the Titleist DT 90. Pretty much played whatever I could get my hands on. I still have some new Professional 90's at home I think. I was pretty brutal on balls back then, taking my hacks with some cheap blades my dad gave me. I could put a smile on a balata in no time.

This thread is funny to me, we just had a discussion about this in chat the other night, i still have a bunch of the old balls in boxes and sleeves.

I have kept a surplus of them as i have bought so many to give away as company balls, i just said i should put them all together and take pics of them, this will force me to do so.

I have Professionals and Tour Prestige ( these were probably my favorites.)

DT Wounds, Revolutions, A10s, Maxfli Patriots, Titleist Tour Distance, Titleist Tour Distance SF, Tour Balatas and i dont even remember what else, i will see what i can find.

Great thread.
