Drawing a straight sight line on a golf ball

I'm not sure if this been discussed before but I'll throw it out there anyway.

After years of struggling with drawing a straight line on my ball, I finally figured out an easy way to do so without shelling out 10 bucks for one of those clips.

Take a toilet paper roll (I assume they come in a standard size) and stick your golf ball in one end. The fit is pretty snug so all you need to do now is align the seam or logo or wherever you want the line to be and use the edge of the TP roll as a guide to draw the line.

It may not improve your game, but I thought it was a worthwhile tip for anyone else that likes having a STRAIGHT aiming line on their ball.

I have tried the gatorade lid tip as well, but I found it to be a little fiddly and difficult to make the line just so. Then again, I am a little picky as I like to draw the line all around the ball directly aligned with the logo. However even a gatorade bottle ring is far better than paying for a piece of plastic.

I've tried the alternatives (gatorade ring, etc.) and I'd use them if I had to, but for crying out loud you pay $10 for a plastic clip and use it for the rest of your life. I bought mine in 2002 and still use it to this day. I've never put a crooked line on a ball in all that time.

Seriously, there are better ways to save your golf money.

That was my thinking when I bought it... and like you, I use it every time I tee it up (or at least use a new ball).

I just paid $6 plus tax on Amazon for two clips and two markers - a red and a black, if you’re thinking about buying. My question is, is it ok in the official golf rules to draw a straight line on the ball. I understand ball identification marking, but this seems to go bejond that to a potential competitive advantage. I like putting a lot better with the lines, but don’t want to be in violation of the rules. Thanks in advance for your responses!  https://www.amazon.com/Jupitoo-Marker-Liner-Drawing-Pieces/dp/B08H88WM82/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=golf+ball+line+marker&qid=1628128076&sr=8-5

I like those Callaway triple track lines. My buddy gave me a device that stencils 3 lines.

I went to find a picture for this post and ended up buying this set of 4 of them for $7 from Amazon. (includes markers and some tees! 🤣)

The Internet, amirite?

It doesn't violate any rules. It's doesn't matter whether the manufacturer adds the line(s) or you draw them yourself.

I'm waiting for Pepperturbo to chime and explain how, when he was teaching at École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he used to draw perfect circles around golf balls blindfolded to illustrate the importance of touch and feel in the visual arts as well as in golf.

Wish has a 3 line stencil that's $2, or free if you wait long enough.

Why blow $10 when you can spend hours that must have zero value on some stopgap measure.

Saving a an empty roll of toilet paper? I don't know what you do with those - paint them, spray them with perfume or what? Over here the time invested in sticking a golf ball into that would be almost zero.

Ordering some plastic appliance from Amazon, eBay or such would involve at least 15 minutes. Finding it, using PayPal or Amazon Check out, waiting for the mail delivery and checking the mail box a few extra times ...

So, the toilet paper thing seems the way to go*, unless you want the really good stuff (Check go ball spinner) that does other things as well. But for just drawing a line?

* unless your outhouse is really sophisticated - Japanese-style water cleaning instead of paper 🙂

I used to draw all the way around it.  But I've found, when I use the line in a perpendicular fashion to the target on shorter puts, less line makes me picture a smaller degree of direction from top to bottom on my putt path.  It makes me hone in more on the line.  I point the line at my target on longer putts.
