biggest OEM golf club "flops"

I don't the the particular model, but Pavin won the open with Cleveland VAS irons. I mean, if that's not proof of the indian not the arrow, I don't know what is.

Per an interview in '95:

The switch to VAS Cleveland irons.

My biggest worry was how much grief I was going to receive from my peers for playing with the VAS irons. But I tested them very thoroughly before I even started talking about any contract to play them. I was very comfortable with the club before I signed on the bottom line. I wouldn't change clubs unless it was a positive change for my game. I felt some pressure to play well with the clubs for Cleveland Golf's sake. In my first three tournaments using the clubs, I finished fourth, second and first. Whatever tiny doubts I might've had, were blown apart by that good start.

Reminder pics are below.

PS: I just included the last pic because it looks extremely awkward.

Cleveland CMM metal crap, it was the worst. Felt good in the wedges, but they wore out in half a season. Genious though, make people buy new ones all the time. The CG2's were a HUGE disappointment. I was waiting for an awesome replacement to the TA-2's, was let down....way down....

Callaway C4, a pro once told me "it feels lighter than a tampon."

Nike, Callaway, whoever else made a club that ended up being non-conforming after retail release.

Cameron Detour

Taylormade Tour Burner (TP and non-TP,) that club just sucks. Sorry to all you that play it. I play the FW's, so I'm not hating on TM...but that driver was absolutely horrid. I tried an 8.5 with an X flex Ozik and all it did was hit high crappy fades about 270. I switched back to my '07 Burner TP to enter the 300+ yard hitter club again.

hmmm, cant back that...have CG1's as backup set and they still play great, not lot of wear at all

dunno about the wedges but think its same material anyway...

Anyone mention the Powerpod Driver or the Bassakward Putter? I still have an orignal one of these. Super club almost impossible to slice- but has a rep for having the head spilt in two. (http://wesellthings4uisrad.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/44dollorgolfdriver1.jpg) I had the bassackward putter too. That was a good concept. I seem to pick all the winners!

Crap, I thought my M685 McGregors were considered decent irons but now I'm starting to wonder.

I use to see a lot of Vas irons, Founders Club drivers, a TON of TM bubble shafted clubs that I wouldn't consider flops.

For me, Liquid Metal irons at 2 grand were the biggest joke I can remember. I have never seen a single set being played even when I worked at a course.

This won't be a popular opinion, but here goes.

The entire 2008 MacGregor product line.

Are they great - not good - great irons? Sure they are, but the strategy did not work.

Re-vamp product line

Issue demos at no charge

Shark goes into Sunday at the Open using said products

Sounds like a great idea so far...

Unfortunately it looks like the company may not make it - how else do you explain the good-as-anything else woods and hybrids selling for under $100 each - brand new? Not good.

I'm a huge Macgregor fan and I love the new irons, I'm a huge supporter of the Pro-M's, but unfortunately you're absolutely right. The entire line, so far, has appeared to flop and the company was recently bought out by Golfsmith from what I've heard. Sad times, but at least we can get great products at great prices! I was actually looking into purchasing a 17* 3-Hybrid soon

I have visions of someone in the mid 1990's with their brand new Cleveland VAS irons, stopping to wrestle on the awkward iron cover after each shot - to maintain their inevitably high resale value.

To the guys who hate Callaway shoes - do they fall apart or you didn't like the fit? I just bought a pair the other day - they're the first comfortable golf shoes I've worn since they banned permanent metal spikes.

I once owned a set of Tommy Armour ti100 irons I bought a demo set at a local pro shop in high school. I liked them at the time but when I replaced them with a set of TM 320's I never looked back.

It has been mentioned a ton already but my dad who has a halfway decent game but I always leave to course wondering how, still plays with a Callaway C4 driver to this day. He likes it and seemingly has no intention of replacing it soon. He slices the hell out of it but that's his swing.

He also bought that Alien lob wedge when it first came out and we had no idea how or what to use a lob wedge for and he hated it.

I had a friend with a very good game who bought TM firesole clubs and immediately regret that purchase.

Cobra L5V line. I have worked at a golf retailer since they came out and I can't say we've sold even 1. Might have helped if they offered more than one shaft, maybe something that wasn't ultra high launch. I know cobra is all about it but if they had offered that club in an 8.5 with a lower launch shaft, a lot of harder swingers might have at least condsidered it. Cobra should have just left it at the L4Vx until the S9I cam out.

Well those are good but 2 that came to mind very quickly were the TOMMY ARMOUR T100 titanium irons they were massive and also the ZEVO line. and most of NIKEs PUTTERS

If you remeber Tommy Arour paid Troy Aikman a ton of money as their poster boy for ht T100 irons, the largest irons ever made.

The Ray Cook Titanics were a decent size though.

Sadly, they were about as successful as the ship.

Knock, knock.

Who's there?

Death Stick golf.

Death Stick golf who?

Exactly.

I must admit I've never heard of those mate. I remember the Death cigarettes, complete with black skull and crossbones logoed packet, that were so beloved of image-conscious humanities students of a few years ago, but not the golf club equivalent.

I suppose it proves your point quite eloquently though.

Also, the tri-ball putter from odyssey

Why?

That was a Pelz idea. I think anything Pelz related is a flop.

What about The Perfect Club? I think the idea turned out to be the forefront of today's hybrids, but those infomercials were awful, plus I never saw anyone game it.

About the Cleveland VAS, those are the ugliest irons I have seen, however, I was paired with a guy who gamed them. He shot 79 that day. I guess it really is the Indain not the arrow.
