biggest OEM golf club "flops"

Dill Pickleson

Recommended Posts

over the last decade or so, or whenever
what clubs just "flopped", in terms of sales, or i guess clubs that just didn't perform well, eather or

any opinions or facts on this?

were there any standouts that just didn't sell well at all, was it because of performance or cosmetics, what are your thoughts?

i'm not too keen on this at all really, but as far as sales go, did these clubs "flop"

i-mix
cleveland xls
scotty detour

don't get me wrong, i am by no means saying these clubs aren't good, but did they not sell very well?

anyway, what were some of the biggest golf club or marketing "flops"

clubs that oem's would like to go back in time and not release, for one reason or another

thanks in advance, just looking to open up a discussion, pretty bored

Callaway C4 Driver.

+1, I bought an ERC II, and when it became illegal I chose the C4 over the steelhead III as the replacement. I hit some ok drives with it, but it didn't have a good feeling or sound. It kept breaking and I eventually got a GBBII as a replacement, but quickly moved on to a R510tp. I haven't hit any of the other all carbon fiber heads.

Another vote for the C4. Just an awful concept. Worst part of it was that I was working at a golf shop when it came out and the pro talked us all into buying one on pro form and we were only allowed a limited number of pro form purchases so when we all realized what a stinker it was we couldn't order something different.

This won't be a popular opinion, but here goes.

The entire 2008 MacGregor product line.

Are they great - not good - great irons? Sure they are, but the strategy did not work.

Re-vamp product line

Issue demos at no charge

Shark goes into Sunday at the Open using said products

Sounds like a great idea so far...

Unfortunately it looks like the company may not make it - how else do you explain the good-as-anything else woods and hybrids selling for under $100 each - brand new? Not good.

Adaptive Golf.....look out for the one-armed man:

I guess I am a sucker I had a C4 it was ok but didn't have it long I think in large part because after I purchased it I saw the price drop so quick made me think it wasn't any good.

I had the detour I liked it rolled the ball great touch was an issue though.

I still have the imix I love it I think the problem with it was it came out in the middle of the cycle and why give up a perfectly good Ft-5 for an imix one that is why they should have released the imix versions of the new FT-IQ and FT-9 at the same time as the the glued models

My vote defintely the C4

Yes, Callaway C4 driver. That thing was hideous.

And believe it or not, but the Odyssey Marxman and new Cleveland Niblick are big sellers here... according to one fo the reps at The Golf Mart. They couldn't keep them on the shelves.

The Taylor Made CGB Max Limited was a bust, as is the iMix. I've seen 1 iMix and have never seen a CGB Max Limited on the course. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen a CGB Max driver on the course.

I'd agree on the CGBMax... anyone buy one?

IMO the Epic shaft was an epic fail. Why Grafalloy discontinued the CompNT then went in the Epic direction is beyond me. They handed aftermarket shafts at that price point to Aldila on a silver platter.

Since the obvious have been stated, I'll throw in the TM Bubble Shaft. Yeah, it's not a "club" but the shaft does attach the "club"head! :D

I would not say the 2008 line from Macgregor for the simple fact that made no attempts to market the product. Other than the cultish type following the products received on boards like this one they had nothing.

The MacTec line from Macgregor was a MONUMENTAL FLOP! Barry Schnider's attempt to bring a successful Asian line to the US was the beginning of a downward spiral for Macgregor. I hope that Macgregor can recover but if they don't I think one could thank the MacTec line.

I don't understand this one. The bubble was super hot for years! I hate that we need to find grips for them every so often though...
