It really depends on the situation for me. I'll play a little bit different shot if the pin is front, back, tucked behind a bunker/hazard. Assuming theres no wind and the pin is right in the middle of the green then I'm just hitting a stock 5 iron. However if the pin is in the front of the green and you can miss short then I'm gonna muscle a 6 iron there.

Whether the pin is front, back, or middle, we are still talking about a 200 yard shot.

No kidding? But if you're not hitting a different shot to front/back pins then you probably aren't that good of a player. If I'm 200 yards to a front pin and I'm trying to get it close, as in sub 20 feet then I'm hitting a hard 6 iron so it flies quite a bit higher than a normal 5 iron swing. Maybe to understand things, if you're 125 yards out to a back pin are you going to hit a full gap wedge and try to fly it past the hole and spin it back? No, most good players will hit a flip PW and bounce it in...where as the same shot to a front pin you're probably going to hit that full gap wedge past the pin and let it spin back a little bit. Most of the courses I play are hard enough where you cant stop a 5 iron to a front pin unless you land it in the fringe with little to no margin for error.

Well could be one of three things, draw a 6, normal 5, or fade a 4.

Obviously I misread then. I understand what you mean now, and I do the same as you in those situations.

Assuming the ball had a perfect lie, there was no wind, the pin was right in the centre of the green, no elevation change between me and the green, the ground was neither wet nor dry, and that I am playing above sea level (like here in Alberta), I would hit a 5 iron.

But obviously my club choice would change depending on many variables. ;)

I will frame my responses similar to above: no elevation change, no wind but for me, it is AT sea level and here in Houston, hot and humid. As I am a new resident here, I am still getting used to the longer flight I am getting on my clubs from when I played in NY/NJ.

Off the tee, I hit a 4 iron, maybe a 5 iron (as I get used to how far things are flying here)

Off the deck, I would hit a hard 4 or a choke down 3 iron.

I may not be the longest hitter, but I hit my 2 iron 220-240 off the deck and driver goes 280+, and here in Houston, more like averaging 300.

4 iron

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if someone hits a 7-8 iron 200 yards then wouldn't they be hitting their PW about 160-170? What would they do for the 80-150 yard scoring zone, play 5 different wedges? Or play 3/4, 5/8, 7/8 ... 13/16 shots?? Almost seems like as much/more of a disadvantage than advantage.

i would hit an 8 iron hard, then realise i could have knocked a 7 pin high without any effort and not be left with a 25foot putt

off to the range again tonight

bring it on

You are either bullshitting us, or you have no accuracy what so ever.

Edit: after thinking about it, there are players who can hit their 7 iron 200, but I am still going to call b/s.
