I live about 30 miles from Firekeeper and knew nothing of this event. Must have my head in the sand. I confirm everything you wrote about Firekeeper. You would have been hitting into a pretty good wind over those two days on that open range.

Steep as a jeep. Quit pulling down with your arms. Can't believe Dan can't fix that.

He's not close to steep

Reigning Champion: PING G30 (9°) Alta X (Big + setting) 45.75"

Challenger: Taylormade M2 (10.5°) Graphite Design AD DI 6X (Standard setting) 45.00"

Driver was always the most difficult club for me to hit. I distinctly remember playing in the 2014 Kansas Amateur and only hitting driver twice over 36 holes, one nearly OB. I was scared to hit it, and rightfully so. I could play decent golf hitting 3i off of every tee, but I couldn't go low. Since then, I made a commitment to improve with D and 3W in-hand, and it has allowed me to go low. Finding the Taylormade Mini last year was a big part of that, but I still was in search of the perfect driver for me.

Over the past year, I have been hitting the PING G30 decent. It was much more forgiving than other models I've played in the past (Razr Hawk Tour, Anser, SLDR, etc.), but my dispersion was still a little off.

Last month, I had the opportunity to travel to Scottsdale and stopped by the PING campus for a driver fitting.

I was getting pretty consistent carry/total numbers across the board, even with different shafts and lofts. I tried 3-4 shafts with my G30 9.5 and found the stock Alta X had the best feel and dispersion (blue circle).

Fitting_Results.jpg

(NOTE: On the chart, the TFC 419D shaft is actually the stock Alta shaft, but they couldn't input that because it wasn't offered on the G30, just the G).

Since getting back from Scottsdale, I've been hitting driver the best I ever have. Of course, that meant I should get a new driver to try for fun. :russian_roulette:

The M2 came in last week and it is one gorgeous golf club!

M2_AD_DI.jpg

I have had 2-3 chances to get the G30 and M2 out side-by-side on the course, but I still want a few more rounds to make my final decision.

My initial impression is that the M2 is long, really long. The 2 pictures below are a few open par fives at my home club. Good-for-good, the M2 was 9 and 14 yards longer, respectively.

M2_Comparison_1.jpg

M2_Comparison_2.jpg

However, with my G30, I am now confident that I will not miss it left. I can aim down the left side and my miss is an over-cut. My dispersion with the M2 is lacking; it misses can be a slight draw or an over-cut. You all know how hard it is to play with a two-way miss.

At this point, I'm going to fiddle around with the hosel settings on the M2. I'm thinking maybe I need the face little closed like on my G30.

If I can sort the dispersion out a little, the M2 will unseat the G30. If not, to the BST it goes!

Thanks for posting the results of your testing thus far. I tried the M2 briefly (both driver and FW) and was also impressed by the ball speeds. Hope you get that dispersion figured because it seems like the driver has a lot of potential. Slightly surprised that even in 10.5* the M2 is working so well distance wise.

I was torn when ordering it, but my G30 is set to 10° and I prefer a higher ball flight. The launch windows are very similar, with the M2 actually coming out a little lower occasionally.

At the beginning of the year, I wrote down a series of goals for the 2016 golf season. One of those goals was to win a KGA Mid-Amateur Series event.

The Kansas Golf Association puts on one-day tournaments across the state throughout the season as part of this Mid-Am Series. They are great for guys that can't get out of the office for many of the big multi-day events. Also, Mid-Amateur Player-of-the-Year points are awarded which determines year end awards, participants in the annual (east v. west) Kanza Players Cup (another goal), and exemptions into the Kansas Amateur.

Last year, I played in one or two, and I found them to be invaluable in getting more experience in competition. They are smaller and more informal than your big state amateur stroke play or match play events, but they still get the competitive juices and first-tee jitters going. I want to play in as many events as I can so I'm not getting too anxious or pumped up training and waiting weeks or monthts for the bigger events.

Yesterday was the first event of the year and was played at my old club, Canyon Farms. Many locals can attest, it is not as easy track! We got about 5" of rain the night before, so the field shrank and the course was playing long. The wind was also blowing 15-20 MPH with gusts up to 30. With the conditions, I felt like it was playing 4-5 shots harder than normal.

I got the first W of my young golfing career and crossed off one of my goals for 2016!

I was staring at 68 ... but wanted 67!

18 is usually a reachable par five, but it was playing straight into the howling wind. I hit a great drive and great 4i leaving 120 to a back left pin. I wanted to end with a birdie and tried to flight a 9i under the wind. I was hitting the ball well all day, especially having to flight almost every shot, so I felt comfortable with the shot. I just pulled it fractionally and the wind took it. It skipped off the green into the water. :censored2:

Looking back, I could have coasted in with a 68 hitting PW to 30 feet and two-putting. But I wanted the 67! :D

Putter get hot, or hit shots close, or both?

You know, a little bit of both, but more than anything just solid, smart golf.

If I had to pin-point a few things:

  • After charting some yardages with wedges, I feel much more comfortable from 30-130 yards. I knocked down some flags with wedge in hand for a few tap-ins.
  • Getting off the tee has been night-and-day better than before. I feel like I can aim down the left side, and it is not going left.

Which driver? M2? Really awesome to reach your goals, not easy to do in tournament golf.

The G30 is still in the bag. I just haven't had enough testing with the M2; it is long but the dispersion is a little off. The G30 is reliable at this point, and more importantly, I know where it is going to miss.
