a superb write up and some superb teaching going on there. sounds like he really knows his onions.

when I first saw your swing on his instagram it looked a whole lot shallower and you can really see that criss cross drill working.

Intriguing about the wedge game, will give that a try.

Whats the iron game?

Whats the iron game?

Pick a distance to start at, say 150. There are +2 to -2 points available for every ball.

  • Distance control. If you are +/- 5 yards of your distance, you get +1 point (zero points if you miss distance). The distance changes with each ball: 150, 130, 140, 135, 145. Great for working on distance control with the same club.
  • Accuracy. Decide if you want to work on left pins or right pins. For this example, we will work on left pins. Segment an imaginary green on the range. There is a heavy emphasis on not short-siding yourself. Since we are working on left pins, we do not want to miss left. Missing the green on the short side (left) is -2. Hitting the correct portion of the green (left) is +1. Hitting the fat side of the green (right) is 0. Missing the green on the other side (right) is -1.

Keep track of your scores. Change the pin location (and point zones change).

I think it is a great way to add some pressure to your practice session, get target-oriented, simulate on-course shots, and work on controlling distance and misses.

Does it feel like you are straightening the right arm a little from the top in order to keep it wide on the downswing?

Not so much for me, but I know some of his students have that feeling. I'm thinking more "maintain width" than "increase width," I guess you could say. I just don't want to get too narrow and have the right elbow get too pitchy.

Great thread. Its unfortunate it will have to get deleted because of the GG mention... ;)

Exactly what I was thinking! All of us GG supporters will be banned sooner or later...

Man, just givin it all away!! lol

Did he ever get back to you on changes for front pins vs. back in the 30-70 game? Seemed like the video on the member site indicated tempo was the answer....long/slow for front pin to get higher trajectory?

Great job on the changes btw, sounds like you got a ton out of your time there!

I never heard back, and I forgot to ask him while I was there.

Have you been working on 30-70 and 80-120? I'm going to hammer those 2-3X per week. I can already tell a big difference in 30-70 since I started focusing on them. So much more confidence on the course from those distances. I'm guessing it will translate to 80-120 distances once I work on that more too.

Yup, I just finished my garage driving range build with Flightscope, so the 30-70 and 80-120 is my daily warm up :) Still working on full swing changes from Dana, but those 30-70 yardages especially have me licking my chops on the course.

I still can't fathom 11' though...haha

Is this the same feeling as keeping then hands the same distance from right shoulder from. the top of the backswing to the downswing that Dan talks about?

Yeah...when you get to the top, you have width established.

If there's even a hint of arm pull from the top, that angle will narrow.

Staying wide means staying stable with the arms. Keep what you built up top. Let the leg work handle the downswing, and that will yank on your lat muscles, which will get you rotating correctly and shallowing the club. After that, you can let the arms go.

That's why George has us doing freezers. You have to get to the top, stop at a good position, then lead with the lower body. Arms stay where you had them at the top.

At first, we do it slow. 8 irons at 75 yard tempo. It's easier to feel that way.

Can you explain how you feel your left arm works in the foreswing?

By foreswing, I take it you mean downswing. The only left arm feel I have is keeping the arms high/wide as I stay in flexion and pivot. I don't think about any internal rotation or conscious manipulations.

THis 30-70 drill is really only possible with a launch monitor yeah?

I haven't used a launch monitor at all. First time was at GG's facility with a short game area with about 70 yards of FW. The second time was the other night during the evening at my club. I found an open hole, measured off the distances, hit, and measured.

Is this the same feeling as keeping then hands the same distance from right shoulder from. the top of the backswing to the downswing that Dan talks about?

Yes, very much so.

Can you describe the 30-70 drill?
One ball each from 30 yards, 40 yards, 50 yards, 60 yards, and 70 yards at the same pin. Measure the cumulative distance. He recommends doing it for a front, middle, and back pin 2-3 times per week.

All using the same club?

I guess you don't have to use the same club, but I do. 60° wedge.

There was a recent YouTube or Instagram post where he walks through that drill with one of his new juniors.

I think he mentions using a lob wedge for front/middle pins and a sand wedge or pitching wedge for back pins. Obviously there can be differing factors that can cause you to use a LW to a back pin but just for a stock shot/location that was his recommendation.

YMMV

For those interested, Gankas just posted a video going through the 30-70 drill.

Awesome thread, it's been cool stumbling on this and seeing your progress. Looks like a good 2016 schedule. Wondering if you think it's worth my time to enter those tournaments as a 3.2 index? I've never played competitively and don't want to embarrass myself, but would also like to get the competitive juices flowing at some point.

100% yes. The KGA Series events are a good way to get your feet wet, and the scores vary from a few under to a lot over. I entered my first Missouri Amateur when I was a 2-3 handicap. You will be just fine! I was hesitant at first as well, and jumping in was the best decision I made for my game.
