QMany's Swing/Sticks (KS Mid-Am Team Champion p. 125)

Swing is looking good. Did you have a steep backswing before you went to see George or is that something you worked on with him?

That is something we specifically worked on.

I was progressing nicely when I got to the full swing, but I still had a little steepening at the top. That was the next point of emphasis for GG. He checked it out on video and then had me hit a few and then freeze at the top on a few. He noticed that my shoulder was very tight and had pretty much exhausted its external rotation. (I didn’t even tell him that I had shoulder injuries in the past and have always had limitations and some pain with extreme external rotation.) He noticed that the shoulder was so tight and wound up in external rotation that the first the it wanted to do was spring back from that position and go into some internal rotation (and steepen the shaft). I was at my full range of external rotation and couldn’t go further into external rotation from there to help shallow the shaft.

He had me try a few “cross-ups” where you feel really internally rotated at the top (think: chicken wing) and then let it naturally externally rotate with the correct pivot (“sitting into the right side” to be addressed more later).

Basically, he wants me going steep-to-shallow dynamically. It is a very comfortable feeling; it was really hard for me to get in that picture-perfect "waiter holding a tray" position at the top. However, it was hard for my to trust it as the lesson was in May and my competitive season was just ramping up. At the end of my season the first week of October, I committed to that feeling and I've been hitting it really well.

you used to struggle with shallowing before didn't you? not anymore!

Yeah, I had a little steeping move at the top and then tried to shallow it out later. It feels and looks a little better, but I hope to improve it more this off-season. It is good when I stay wide.

LOL, they should be chasing his positions!

Guessing the pros are better at not trying to copy or model someone else's swing, or are they? Always wondered if they get sucked into that as well, just on a different level.

most of them were influenced by older players for sure. Dufner with hogan, scott with Tiger list goes on and on. Even guys who don't look similar usually had a big influence

No question. Look at guys emulating Nicklaus and now Tiger. Just curious if they are as gullible as some of us in general. As many players think they need to change their swings, maybe they are.

Anyway, Q - swing looks awesome and if ballstriking is best ever that tells you what you need to know!

I think most of them keep their general shape of swing, what got them on tour atleast that would be wise but some of them do chase perfection after getting on tour and it brings them down (sean o hair comes to mind). Q has been changing the shape of his swing so not sure where you are going with this. Q also admitted to having shoulder issues so I'm not sure you would want to chase his positions like you suggested either.

No idea what you are talking about and not going anywhere, sorry, don't know how to respond.

"Pros chasing QMany" was a simple compliment, his swing looks great. Not suggesting he is chasing/copying any pro's particular positions - he isn't.

Nothing more to it.

does looks better, I think Q is still trying to get rid of this below during actual playing rounds

Q's swing transition during callaway trip recently

Just wondering if there were any pro's backswings he liked and look to for inspiration, think he was into Justin Rose at one point not sure if thats changed because his backswing looks different to me. Watching Tigers old swing helps me, also watching hunter mahans tempo/rhythm use to help me as well even if I dont look like a carbon copy of them

I enjoy watching Tour swings, but I don't chase any of their positions. My favorite swing on Tour right now is probably Emiliano Grillo and then Dustin Johnson is just fun to watch.

That is a tough camera angle to draw lines and do swing analysis. That being said, yes, I do want to get my first move from the top shallower.

Q! I'm slowly becoming green with jealously lol I'm joking of course but I stumbled on this thread (thanks for posting) and saw that you worked with GG. I usually spend a solid 15 minutes a night rewatching those vids on his IG. Sometimes the amount he talks makes my head spin but the guy seems to really knows his stuff. And on top of that produces results for his students.

I liked the stuff on practice/range and will work to incorporate that this year. Practice on the range is always a source of frustration with no real direction out there.

His Instagram is a rabbit hole, you can get lost going video to video on Instagram! He really does know his stuff and is a great dude. The practice routine stuff has been big for me; I feel I'm much more efficient on the range and now should probably be spending that extra time on/around the greens.

You have a very nice swing Matt, hit the ball a long way and are a nice guy. Good combinations. :-)

Thanks for the kind words, brother! cheers.gif

I saw a series of videos by MDLT, and am going to give that a try. He really simplifies things, and I am a simple guy.

I need to do some further research tonight from the beginning of this thread and watch some of those GG videos posted. I bought a pass to a local indoor facility that has a camera setup. I plan on going at the very least Tues/Thurs on my lunch to work on my swing at the very least.

I've noticed that I'm very stable in my back swing, hips don't sway backwards, pressure is on the inside of my right leg, pretty even pressure in footing too. But in my down swing it looks like my hips tend to sway forward rather than the sitting motion and turn that he constantly discusses. Any tips on getting started with that motion? Like I said though, going to read up on it a little more and start to work on it tomorrow.

EDIT: I will add that sometimes I get confused on whether the dramatic squat and turn is needed? As I watch swings like Rory's and I can't honestly tell how much that happens in his swing. I want to see if I'm able to save copies of my swing on video to post in a new thread here for feedback.

Practice

One of the big takeaways was how I should practice and prepare for events. In the past, I’ll be the first to tell you I didn’t practice efficiently. I would hit balls more than anyone I know, but it probably wasn’t the best way to bring about a swing change. For example, I would grind for an hour or two hitting 9i after 9i at the 150 flag, maybe working on a specific feel, and then get disappointed if I wasn’t flagging it.

GG talked to me a lot about moving between internal and external focus during a practice session. For example, set aside 10 balls and work on exaggerated moves [like] sitting into the R and keeping the hands high at 50%. You can think about mechanics but don’t worry about where the ball goes! Then, set aside 10 balls and only think about targets, such as playing the iron point game. Alternate between those modes and it should help incorporate the change faster.

It seems like when I do this, my range sessions are quicker and more productive. It might look something like this:

  • Warmup
  • 10 balls: Freezers at 30-60-90%
  • 5 balls: Iron point game with left pin starting at 150 yards (full pre-shot routine)
  • 5 balls: Iron point game with right pin starting at 165 yards (full pre-shot routine)
  • 10 balls: 90-90 swings working on rotation
  • 5 balls: Iron point game with right pin starting at 200 yards (full pre-shot routine)
  • 5 balls: Freezers with D
  • X balls: Driver point game

During the season, I had weekly practice goals that I wanted to check off my list:

  • Landing spots chipping drill
  • 30-70 wedge control drill
  • 80-120 wedge control drill
  • Iron point game (5)
  • Driver point game
  • Play 36 holes
  • Eyeline putting mirror for mechanics
  • Lag putting game (36 holes)

I try to have my tasks planned before I get to the range, so I have a purpose and am not just aimlessly beating balls.

The regular EPIC, not the Sub Zero. I don't fight excessive spin, and we liked the adjustability to help take out the left side.
