Hey Matt, apologies if I missed this in all the posts on various threads, and I know its probably way too early to say, but what do you think the odds are for the new irons to stay in the bag? Any issues on the course that would make you question the Cally's over your old TM's?

I'm sorry for the delay; mobile has been glitchy and I'm currently on my honeymoon. But she's sleeping and I found WiFi, so here we are.

 

The Apex Pro irons are really good. They have similar shape, size, flight, and forgiveness to my Taylormade Tour Preferred MC. But the Apex Pros are a little softer and a little easier to hit in the long irons. I think the shaft fitting probably helped me out the most. I only have a small sample size at this point, but going from KBS Tour to X100 seems to have improved my dispersion and made it easier to flight in the wind. I'm looking forward to further testing when I get home and the weather allows.

It can't get here fast enough! I hope we get a few sneaky good days in February-March like we did last year. I'm very lucky though, I get to spend a week in Naples in mid-March to practice and play everyday. A perfect way to kick off the season!

That is something we specifically worked on.

 

I was progressing nicely when I got to the full swing, but I still had a little steepening at the top. That was the next point of emphasis for GG. He checked it out on video and then had me hit a few and then freeze at the top on a few. He noticed that my shoulder was very tight and had pretty much exhausted its external rotation. (I didn’t even tell him that I had shoulder injuries in the past and have always had limitations and some pain with extreme external rotation.) He noticed that the shoulder was so tight and wound up in external rotation that the first the it wanted to do was spring back from that position and go into some internal rotation (and steepen the shaft). I was at my full range of external rotation and couldn’t go further into external rotation from there to help shallow the shaft.

 

He had me try a few “cross-ups” where you feel really internally rotated at the top (think: chicken wing) and then let it naturally externally rotate with the correct pivot (“sitting into the right side” to be addressed more later).

 

Basically, he wants me going steep-to-shallow dynamically. It is a very comfortable feeling; it was really hard for me to get in that picture-perfect "waiter holding a tray" position at the top. However, it was hard for my to trust it as the lesson was in May and my competitive season was just ramping up. At the end of my season the first week of October, I committed to that feeling and I've been hitting it really well.
