QMany's Swing/Sticks (KS Mid-Am Team Champion p. 125)

Little town in Southeast corner, Falls City, Neb. Play in this almost every year and they get a few past Huskers. Played with Neil Smith a few years back. Johnny Rodgers is usually there. They also had "The Pipeline" from I believe the 94 and 95 seasons. Kind of wasted on a Cowboys fan, but always enjoyed it when Nebraska would beat OU, so knew names.

Congrats man! I still regret not making time to play that place before I moved from Topeka.

THANKS! Firekeeper is a pretty good track, but you can't play it during the dog days of summer. It has bent grass fairways that they keep soaked when it is hot. It makes for terrible playing conditions on a course design that should play firm and fast. But their greens are always good! It is a fun stay & play weekend with the casino and lodging right there.

CLUBHOUSE-PUTTING-GREEN-AERIAL.jpg

Founded on May 1, 1896, The Kansas City Country Club is the third oldest country clubs west of the Mississippi River. The Club has a proud heritage and was founded on a strong love of the game of golf.

With 127 founding members the Club was originally located at the current site of Loose Park in Missouri. In 1926 the Club relocated to its current location in Mission Hills, Kansas. Renowned golf course architect, A.W. Tillinghast, was hired to design the new golf course. He provided models of greens, traps, blue prints and surveys of the course.

The golf course is the definition of traditional. The small fast green are guarded with thick rough and bunkers. Fairways are fairly narrow and play between large trees and thick rough to penalize errant shots. There is nothing tricky about this golf course, what you see is what you get. This is an important design principle that guided Mr. Tillinghast in his work. This philosophy is best summed up his following quote:

"Any great course will take a good beating from good men, and there is nothing that can be done to fairly stop it, nor any reason why there should. There is no course in the world that will prevent the right player from breaking 70 if it is his day to get all the breaks."

Over the years The Kansas City Country Club has hosted many regional and national tournaments. It has hosted the Trans-Mississippi Amateur, the Missouri Amateur, the Kansas Amateur, numerous state championships and USGA qualifiers.

A number of great players have called the Club their home course through the years. These players have won Missouri and Kansas Amateur titles, the Trans-Mississippi Amateur, and city championships. The Club is also home to five-time British Open Champion, Tom Watson. The skills Mr. Watson learned from long-time club professional Stan Thirsk helped him win eight major championships, and it all started at this Club.

What a week! The Kansas Amateur is always my favorite event of the year. And Kansas City CC was an incredible venue!

DFNcc-fU0AEA_Rz.jpg

73-75

Wednesday (Round 2) was tough! We played the front nine in the rain and then the back nine in hot, humid, wind. I had about 3-4 holes (11-14) where my swing left me. But I collected myself and hit perfect tee shots on two of the toughest par fours (15-16) to make clutch pars. I was cumulative +7 on 18 tee. After a good tee shot rolled in the first cut, I caught a flier that was in jail over the green, deep rough, downhill, and downwind. I was trying to just flop in on the green knowing 5 would be good from there but was unable to even get it to the fringe. My subsequent chipped just wouldn't stop. I went through my routine and drilled a 20' to finish at 148 and qualify for match play. 149 was a 5 for 3 playoff.

Stroke Play Results

In the first round today, I drew University of Kansas golfer, Andy Spencer. Last month, he torched the field at The Watson Challenge, hosted by Tom Watson to crown the best player in Kansas City (pro or am), winning by 7!

I played really well, and we had a great match. I was 2U after 14, but hit it in the trees on 15 to make bogey. On 17, I was 1U. A severe dogleg left, he hit it dead straight, what I thought was jail, but it kicked straight down into the rough. He hit an incredible punch 3W under the trees from 290 to 15 feet to square the match. I was short-sided in the deep rough on 18 but hit a great chip to 2' to extend.

On the first playoff hole, I had a severe hanging lie, so aimed about 8 yards left of the tucked right pin. I thought I flushed a wedge, only to look up and see it squirting right into the deep rough. I couldn't get up and down, and he beat me with par.

Match Play Bracket and Results

It was a tough way to finish, but I don't hang my head. I take nothing but positives from this experience. I made match play for the first time and then took one of the best players in the city/state the distance. This gives me nothing but confidence about how far my game has progressed; I can play with the best.

Dude, way to battle. I hate the result didn't pan out the way you'd (or I'd) have liked for it to. I knew you had game. Hope it doesn't sound condescending to say I'm proud of you.

Great playing Q, definite head held high after that performance, always good when you can pull down deep in the clutch and pull shots off. Very unlucky with the tough draw but certainly did yourself proud running a player of that calibre all the way! nice one buddy

Gave the kid a good fight, Q, well done!

I'm sorry, did you say "punch 3 wood from 290"? No comprende, senor.

That's how I felt too! :taunt: I hit a similar tee shot the previous day and was completely blocked out. There is a tree about 50 yards away that you have to stay under. I hit a perfect punch-draw 4i that scooted to about 80 yards. I thought he would do well to replicate that. I don't have the 290 punch 3W in the bag, and my heart sank watching it trundle and roll on tight.

Guess that was your (and by proxy, our) regularly scheduled reminder that those days of being 21 and pulling off physically impossible shots are over and not coming back. Something similar happens to me almost every time I play with the college kids in state events here in FL. It does provide the fuel for getting after it in the gym, though.

Heart of America Fourball

August 7-9, 2017

Topeka CC

The Kansas Golf Assoc. and Kansas City Golf Assoc. recently revitalized a great event, the Heart of America Fourball. It has rich history with great champions including Payne Stewart, Jim Colbert, Matt Gogel, etc. Each association hosts their own event, the State and City Fourball Championship, and the Top-16 from each qualify for the Heart. From there, it is March Madness bracket-style match play with the Kansas Golf Assoc. teams on one side and the Kansas City Golf Assoc. on the other.

I paired with a member from my club, and we went in as the #6 seed on the Kansas City Golf Assoc. side.

Topeka CC is a hidden gem designed by Perry Maxwell (Prairie Dunes, Southern Hills, and Augusta renovations including #10). It is a very tight tree-lined course with many doglegs and small undulating greens. It made a great match play venue!

We played well on Day One. In the morning, we won 2&1 when my partner went bananas on the back nine birdieing 4 of the last 7. In the afternoon, we fought all day and found ourselves 1D after they hit a impossible 50-foot bomb on the 15th hole. I birdied 16 to square the match, then my partner birdied 17 to square. In extra holes, I hit a 20' par putt to extend and then drilled a 20' snaking birdie to win! We were the last match of the day with a little gallery; it was an incredible feeling and put us into the Elite Eight!

Day Two, we played even better but found ourselves 1D on 18, a driveable par four. I drove the fringe, but on the wrong side, the best I could do after a perfect pitch was 20'. Do or die, with everyone else in the hole, I drilled it to extend! Unfortunately, we missed a few great chances on the first two extra holes and lost on the third with our first team-bogey all day.

It was a great experience, and I can't wait to compete again next year!
