Does the guy you work with do any online type lessons? I really like the move you put on the ball and badly want to get rid of my inside out move, my short game is easily good enough to compete in similar events but my long game has me 1-2 shots on the outside of qualifiers. I think I missed qualifying for the 3 biggest events of my year by 1 stroke each this year :(

Congrats on playing so well!

George Gankas does offer online lessons. I am not sure of the exact price, but I think they are pretty reasonable as part of his membership site. Full disclosure, I have never done an online lesson with him. I have visited him in LA twice now and we keep in touch through text. But I know he is incredibly busy on the range and has recently been traveling quite a bit with Sung Kang, so I don't know what turnaround times may be.

Have you gotten solidly into the + range this year? I hover between +1 and 0 can't seem to get any lower, with my tournament scores more being in the 74 range.

With the revision yesterday, I am at my lowest handicap so far (+2.3) which includes 11 T scores in those last 20 rounds.

That's what I figured and where I'd love to get to. Too much time spent to not want to get better.

Under the watchful eye of KSGolfCoach (Josh Nahm), I've been really working hard on my putting this year.

As part of the DECADE tutorials, there is a great speed drill I've been doing. Paired with using the Pelz Putting Tutor to work on line, my putting has improved:

  • Season SGP -0.32
  • Last 20 Rounds SGP -0.22
  • Last 10 Rounds SGP +0.89
  • Season 3-Putt Avoidance 4.92%
  • Last 10 Rounds 3-Putt Avoidance 1.17%
  • Season Make Rate 4-8' 76%
  • Last 10 Rounds Make Rate 4-8' 86%
  • Season Make Rate 8-10' 46%
  • Last 10 Rounds Make Rate 8-10' 63%

Yes, sir. I have been using Aimpoint Express for probably three years now. I have really bad eyes, which is also another reason I use the yellow Srixon. It has helped me immensely.

High Plains Amateur

August 26-27, 2017

Golf Club at Southwind

Southwind%2015.jpg

I recently made the 6-hour trek to Garden City, Kansas to compete in the High Plains Amateur. It is held at the Golf Club at Southwind. Surprisingly, Garden City has two fine courses: Southwind (private) hosts an Adams Tour Pro-Am event, and Buffalo Dunes (public) hosts the Symetra Tour.

I wasn't striking it very well, especially my mid-irons, but I managed my game well and a solid Saturday 72 put me in the penultimate group. Unfortunately, I was birdie-free during on Sunday and two balls found the gunch, which took me 2 and 3 shots respectively to get out, and dashed my hopes of a title. Instead, I finished T8th.

Looks like a fun course, but one where you better be driving it well I'm guessing?

Not the finish you wanted, I'm sure, but sounds like you're still putting up some good scores even on off weeks! Good stuff

That picture of 14 looks hard, and it was so much harder than it looks...

Welcome to GolfWRX, Park! Prepare to waste an inordinate amount of time.

14 @ KCCC is such a stout par 3. 200-230 yards, crosswind, sloping green, deep bunkers, no bailout, and OB left/long. GOOD LUCK!

There are worse ways I could waste my time I guess.

The last match when I lost to Chase, they put us on kiddie tee's. I remember hitting gap wedge and it was hard green to hit. Then I remembered every other round and usually you play another 100 yards back... Got to be one of the hardest par 3's without a bunch of water there is.

  • 2 weeks later...

October is a bittersweet time of year. I think it is the best time to golf, but the competitive season comes to an end.

Events:

  • Kanza Players Cup (Team W, 1-1-1)
  • Konza Prairie Amateur (51st)
  • Kansas City Fourball (6th)
  • Kansas Amateur Match Play (Qualified for match play, lost in extra holes to #7 seed)
  • Heart of America Fourball (Quarterfinals)
  • High Plains Amateur (8th)
  • Kansas Mid Amateur (30th)

I was disappointed in my finishes in the Konza Prairie Amateur and Kansas Mid Amateur on two courses I thought suited me well, but that is golf. My game/swing didn't feel any different, but I just didn't score. I'm learning.

I finished 6th in the East in Mid Amateur Player of the Year and qualified for another Kanza Players Cup! The West will host at Flint Hills National, Golf Digest #97 and 2017 USGA Junior Amateur host, on May 14-16.

59402.jpg

Statistics (in tournament rounds):

  • 75.19 Scoring Average (74.4 Last 10)
  • -0.25 Strokes Gained Putting (+0.04 Last 10)
  • 5.38% Three Putt Avoidance (5.03% Last 10)
  • 59.12% Greens in Regulation
  • 50.38% Short Game Saves (92.3% < 10 yards, 54.1% 10-20 yards, 28.57% 20-30 yards)
  • 33.3% Sand Saves
  • 58.51% Fairways Hit (16.6% miss left, 24.9% miss right)

There are definitely some places for improvement, and I look forward to attacking those weaknesses this off-season.

I've considered adding an event or two. I thought about the Nebraska Amateur or Texas Mid Amateur to visit Bram, but unfortunately they all seem to have residency requirements.

To be honest, it gets pricey too. Just last year:

  • Kanza Players Cup (including new bag) $230
  • Konza Prairie Amateur $150
  • Kansas Amateur Qualifier $90
  • Kansas City Fourball $150
  • Kansas Amateur $110
  • Heart of America Fourball $100
  • High Plains Amateur $135
  • Kansas Mid Amateur $165
  • Kansas Mid Amateur Series $75/ea.

$1,205 for entries and that doesn't even include travel expenses, cart fees, etc.

Don't even get me started on USGA entry fees; the 18-hole Mid Amateur and Fourball Qualifiers were $175 and $150 respectively.

I haven't bought a club since I was fitted by Callaway at the ECPC. I'm going to need a new 60* wedge over the off-season, but that is it. I'll likely go through 2018 with the same setup, although a new Apex Pro iteration would be hard to look away from.
