Shell’s WW of Golf - favorite matches

Like others I am killing down time watching some great older Shell matches on line

It’s great to see some old time players on classic courses and different countries ... and at some courses I’ve played

Favorites so far:

Nelson vs Littler at Pine Valley 1962. The course, wow. I wish Nelson hadn’t retired so youngHogan vs Snead Houston TX 1965. Hogan is a machine Knudson vs Balding at CPH in Nova Scotia 1965 ... Knudson all time top 10 swings and in heavy wind, lots of 2 ironsPalmer vs Boros in Eleuthera Bahamas 1968 ... two greats ant the now closed Cotton BayAlliss vs Sikes vs Geiberger 1969 at Mauna Kea HI ... great course and nice to see PA play even with his yipsBruce Devlin vs Tommy Jacobs 1967 Rome Italy ... loved Devlin’s swing, 5 back 9 birds for TJTony Lema vs Roberto DiVicenzo 1966 Athens Greece ... two amazing talentsNicklaus vs Snead Pebble Beach 1963 ... two greats on a classic track. Palmer and Player playing a Nicklaus course in Hawaii had a great moment when Player remarked about the natural beauty of something and Palmer said "Jack put that there."

Any of the five matches won by Fred Couples!

There is one with Couples vs Norman where they both shoot a million.

Man I’m watching Burke Jr vs Stan Leonard at Banff Springs ... and its only 25 minutes ... where’s the rest?

I just watched Nicklaus v Snead in 1963 at Pebble Beach.

Epic match as it went down to the wire.

Snead could still play after his prime.

Nicklaus v Palmer at Pinehurst #2 (1994), when commentators were amazed that someone like Arnold Palmer would be carrying a 5-wood. Horrors! Also, a crowd shot where they note the presence of "Walker Cup star" Kelly Mitchum, who currently teaches the putting and short game school at the Pinehurst Academy.

Sarazen v. Cotton at The Old Course. Brutal conditions.

Nicklaus v. Snead and Nicklaus v. Watson at Pebble.

Anything with Peter Thomson.

Nicklaus v. Crenshaw - I think that’s the one where the hilarious story about how they first met is told.

Nicklaus was surgical and made about everything in that match.

Norman and Faldo at Sunningdale is my favorite...

Melbourne, Sunningdale, The Old Course, Pinehurst, Pebble, Turnberry, Portmarnock, Royal County Down, Gleneagles Kings Course ---- just a few reasons to watch!

It’s fun to watch and listen to Sarazen and Demaret ... I guess Jimmy took over from George Rogers

i read somewhere a while ago that Gene didn’t get along with one of them but can’t find the story

Snead vs Demaret in 1966 was also good but Jimmy was way past his prime but I guess the camera liked him enough that he got Rogers job

I always wanted to see Demaret play as Hogan was a fan of his ballstriking, the video on YouTube of his swing in his younger days (1940) is amazing

Just watched Chi Chi play Doug Sanders in 1964 Puerto Rico. Chi Chi was bombing it

i couldn’t believe how young Sanders looked compared to when he missed his short putt at St. Andrew’s

All the matches listed are great. One not listed is Couples vs. Els played Nicklaus North Golf Course at Whistler. So many fantastic things about this match from Ernies Taylormade bubble driver to Freddie being able to swing the club with looking like his back is going to explode. I could be wrong, but looks like freddie is rocking the LYNX Parallax Irons and possibly the Tear drop putter. Regardless its obvious they both enjoy each others company and the course is beautiful. Not to be missed is Els 2 iron on the 13th.

Palmer vs Rodriguez vs Brewer at El Conquistador is a great one. Birdies and eagles everywhere.

Also can’t beat Hogan vs Snead at Houston CC. 7,056 yards long with those balls and drivers. It rained before and during the match too to make it play even longer. Hogan hit every fairway and every green.

My current favorite is Hogan vs Snead at the Houston CC (1964).

As an aside, not part of the WWOG series, is the matchup between Dean Martin and Sam Snead on Celebrity Golf Challenge. Surprised he did so well.

Was watching couples against Daily on a very hard course in Oregon on youtube last night

I knew JD would eventually fold like a cheap camera , it was fun to watch a relatively healthy boom boom

imo couples has the best tempo I've ever seen to this day .

I have enjoyed all that I have watched so far but the Palmer vs. Boros match in the Bahamas is my favorite. The production seems really tight and for some reason hearing Jimmy Demarit say "On Shells wonderful world of golf" makes me happy. The info presented on the Bahamas is interesting to watch and the music and style of dress all bring back some memories of that time. I was also impressed with what a terrific ball striker Palmer was though he did have some trouble on the greens on that day while Boros made everything. https://youtu.be/PKb56_EKXdY

Casper v Sanders at The Country Club is great just for the interview with Francis Quimet and the showing of the clubhouse and porch.

I walked some holes on that course a few years ago. My wife and I love Eleuthera and considered spending a winter there .. but it has no golf course since this closed down. Shame as it looks pretty solid

The Norman course on Exuma is pretty good

Enjoyed watching Player vs Thomson at Royal Melbourne last night

Thomson must be the most natural looking golfer I have ever seen when he stands over a shot

How does one not love Dean Martin? His old roasts where he and Don Rickles get on a roll remind me of my youth and are very entertaining

Rickles would be crucified nowadays for some of the stuff he said back in the day

Watched Boros vs Snead at Peachtree .. could watch them both swing all day

the big added bonus is Bobby Jones is there and chats with Sarazen before and after
