can you go back to the past, cleveland TA 5 irons

Years ago I played a all Cleveland bag irons were TA 5 my handicap was down to a 3.5 since moving on my handicap fluctuates mostly hanging around 10 to 12. I am considering going back to a set of TA 5's or is there something out there comparable to them? I do like that they are not a tall iron behind the ball I think that is where my lack in confidence is most irons made have a tall blade height.

Any suggestions or do I go back to what works?

If you want a set, go buy a set :)
They must be pretty cheap and if you've got good memories of them, hopefully they quickly return.

The Cleveland GI formula is a good one. The later clubs like the CG7, and 588TT are awesome. GI forgiveness but not too much offset.

I had TA5 Gunmetals for a good 10 years. Then I stopped playing for a bit. When I got back into it, the technology had surpassed them and I had a better ball flight and control when I picked up a set of Burner 2.0s to try, which I bought because they just worked so much better (and kicking myself for selling them).

I had the gunmetal TA5's and loved them. Played some of my most consistent golf with them. At one point, I also had the gunmetal TA7's, not the same.

I hear you there I was talked into trading my TA5's in on a set of TA7's was not the same at all.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just pulled out my TA7 3,5, and 7 irons after getting in from work to hit a few balls b4 dark. I have never in my time of playing this game been able to hit a 3 iron tee'd up or not. I proceeded to hit 20 shots with the 3 iron only one fat shot and the same with the 5 iron. Something tells me they will be in the bag for the next round. Lord the money I could have saved many years ago had I never sold my first set. I had forgotten how nice a pured shot feels with these irons.

Great irons...arguably the best irons Cleveland every made. The TA7's sold more sets, but those TA5s were sweet. Mid-profile compared to a lot of current clubs, but as easy to hit as anything made today. The TA6's came out a few years later and were a VERY underrated iron. To me they were an updated TA5.

Markp,

I can't believe you wrote about your experience with TA5s.

Without a doubt the best irons EVER for me. I was playing the very best golf of my life with them, and they were just a couple years old when the Launcher irons were introduced by Cleveland. Foolishly I traded the TA5s for a set of Launchers.

I never played as well with the Launchers (or the subsequent 5 or 6 sets of irons I bought) as I did with the TA5s. One of the dumbest things I ever did and I'll always regret it. I would have saved myself thousands of dollars, lots of time, and I just know my game would be much better, if I had stayed with the TA5s.

I would love to see Cleveland bring them back - re-introduce them. I would immediately buy 2 sets. One to play, and a spare set in case of theft, airline loss, etc.

Now I'll be thinking about my TA5s for days....................................

I bought a mint set of TA5 irons at a thrift store for $15 total. I gave them to a friend who was just getting into golf like I was-- wish I kept them longer. I played with them once and felt like I was hitting a "cleaner" looking Ping Eye 2.

A friend of mine gave me his. My first real set of irons, got them a year ago.

Really like them. Of course, I dont have anything to compare it with. But I really enjoy them.

What a nice friend. Wouldnt take anything for them. I have hopefully given him enough gifts to repay him. But he really did it out of kindness.
