Most Forgiving Driving Iron?

Anyone with a moderate swing speed (99ish with driver) play the gapr lo? Or would it be too hard to elevate without faster clubhead speed?
am at 105.

fitter told me that I should go with mid at least.

Maybe it's just me.

Adams Dhy is pretty good off the tee and the deck. I have had one in the bag for about 3 years now. Nothing has been as consistent from tee to green.

I think we first need to define What you mean by forgiving. Most companies call a club forgiving when you can hit it all over the face and it preserves distance. This is the opposite of what I want. It means that my Off-line shots are going to go just as far and end up in trouble. To me, a club is more forgiving when it Does not preserve distance on mishits. Short is safe.

Easiest to hit for me was the Ping Crossover, could not believe how easy it was to hit that club. Hit it as high as a hybrid, if that is a good thing. Could never get used to the look of it, so, not in my bag anymore.

I have tried just about all of them and the King Utility has been my favorite by far and was my gamer last year... that said I’m using the Apex 19 2HY this year instead.

Not many P790 votes here. Interesting.

Anyway, I’d also like to see a “longest DI” thread and a “favorite DI shaft” thread.

1. longest DI: TM UDI

2. Any steel shaft from your iron set.

Yeah..

When I hit it off the tee passing third driver, they say nothing.

But, when I mishit off the deck, my friends get really happy. lol

Forgiving from the tee, without a doubt, the Srixons; the U45, U65 and U85. Really no difference between them besides the stock shafts.

Forgiving from anywhere else, the fairway, rough and bunkers, and again without a doubt, the GAPR Hi. The hybrid like sole really pays off in forgiveness and glides / cuts through everything so much better then the standard chunky DI sole. And for you narrower sole fans, face it, it's really no contest.

Sorry WRX, but this format is not ready for prime time. The viewing format seems designed for first graders or some of our extra senior friends with those gigantic button phones. The comment editor is double spacing and just hideous. If the goal is to provide the the least amount of content in the most amount of space, then... I know you're working hard, but this is one of the worst conversions I've seen. New hosting?

  • 2 weeks later...

I had been gaming the 790 udi for quite a while with good results. Recently picked up a gapr lo and I cannot believe how much better it is in all areas. I find it much more forgiving across the face, especially high on the face, where as the udi can sting you pretty good if you miss it high. Its definitely easier to hit off the deck as well, something the 790 udi lacked.

I'm enjoying the black club head as well, has a pretty sleek look to it. Visually it does look a little more hybridish than a lot of the true driving irons available, but I don't really mind that as it does instill a feeling of confidence at address.

Just ordered one with a ctaper lite. Crazy cheap vs most driving irons and like you I have heard amazing things. I have a matrix program f15 waiting if I don’t like the c taper. And a kbs tour Proto if I don’t like that.

+1 for the above. I just put a (really) old TM RAC CGB 3i in the bag for the hell of it and results are crazy good so a modern GI/SGI 3i/4i makes tons of sense. Obviously not if you're going to a DI to hit low stingers on windy links or Texas but if it's for one of the other many possible reasons then I don't know anyone in real life that complains of hitting a 2i/3i/DI too high and too straight...

Did you find the head to be too light? I measured mine at c-8. I love miura stuff. I actually just put the k grind 2.0 in the bag. Those driving irons look great but when I demoed it I felt the need to put 5 pounds of lead tape on the head to be able to feel it.

whatever with bigger head—aka thicker sole—except Callie's 1st gen X Utility Prototype.

not joking, i've tried like 10 different ones from almost every brand. so there's a warning. 'considerations' in the head makes a DI more forgiving, same time hard to call if it's an 'iron' sans it's made of steel. some DIs are seriously chunky hence no big difference to the hybrid heads. going for 'forgiving', giving up the crispy/sharp look&feel of a low-lofted iron.

also in my opinion: if your swing can handle that length of x-stiff shaft, forgiving-ness would not be your concern any more.

currently using TP UDI 18º + DG X100 and Vapor Pro 19º + Fujikura Pro 95i. liking TP UDI more in many ways.

I've had a half dozen in the bag over the last couple of years, looking for "the one", including the p790, a ping crossover and recently I tried a gapr. What I ended up with? An RSI 2 iron shafted with a recoil shaft. It's butter smooth, super easy to hit from the tee or the rough, and it's tough to work it side to side, so its tough to have the "disaster" miss.

The Wilson V4 utility was a close second for me, and absolutely would have ended up in the bag if I hadn't stumbled across this 2 iron head on the BST and taken a flyer on it.
