Chamblee on Rory and PGL

Very lively discussion, many strong and divergent points of view, thank you all for posting.

My take on buying a chocolate bar and thus being forever banned from complaining about abuses by the manufacturer or SA in that hypothetical---it's completely specious. It's the same argument that people who have gasoline to buy for their cars can't complain about fossil fuels. Hey, people have to drive and people have to eat (well, maybe not chocolate but for some of us it's part of the food pyramid!). The choices people have are limited by the available options and consumers do not dictate those options unless the consumers emerge as a group force. That's rare but it does happen.

For Rory to not play in SA sponsored events, the next logical step in castigating the money source of the PGL, would be a shock but I bet dollars to doughnuts he's thought of it. I personally applaud his position and his use of his stature to implement change or in this case maybe to derail it. As someone said, it is tangled, for absolute sure. But someone else said there's always a line to be crossed. Those are not mutually exclusive.

We all make choices all the time, whether "enough is enough" fuels your decision to now take a stand on something you hadn't previously, or whether you just feel uncomfortable with rich people exercising their conscience because it's too easy to do when you're rich. Actually, it's probably harder because as someone else pointed out there are real consequences bucking the big bucks folks.

I like Chamblee and his candor, and he's a helluva commentator too.

No and I have no idea how you can extrapolate from my comments that you think I agree. It's his own personal decision, he's not passing judgment on others who don't see it his way and he's not suggesting he's righteous because of this stance, of course others may suggest he is. The accusation of "selective holiness" is ludicrous.

It's irrational rage from his critics.

I doubt it. He's only brought up the money thing lately - before it was legacy and loyalty and some measure of independence, so if you take him at his word he knows what a great thing the current tours are for the players.

I give him credit for opening his mouth about it in an intelligent fashion.

Phil's stupid choice of words was "leverage". Obviously a totally different perspective.

Rory is in a complicated situation. His (perhaps perceived) inability to string four good rounds of golf together sort of makes his statements regarding his desire to play in more limited field events with only the upper crust of players is off-putting to me. If that is his desire I would borrow the mindset of some of the folks against the equipment rollback here and say maybe you need to be dominating the current situation before you ask for more challenge?

If there were no difference in points, money, etc. between events, say the Greater Greensboro Open doled out the same amount to the winner as did The Players, would players just go to the courses they wanted to play and what fit their schedules? I'd say yes. Which is why you have to implement rules about how many events a player must play in to get X and the points and money are different at each event. The money I would think is less impacted by what than it is by where and by who is there to drive interest.
