I'm with Abb on this.

I mean. . .Eagle says yesterday he finished the year 14/18 breaking 80.

Goof for him, but we all know that kind of statement is missing a very important piece of information. I'm not saying, you gotta tip it out like a man, but I've played about 75% of my rounds the last two years from 7000+ at Hobbits and Waverly.

I'm not saying that like "man up", but I am saying that like the percentage of times you break 80 is pretty closely linked to what course you're playing. You want me to break 80 20/20, get me in line at Clifton.

Yes you are, "Man up and play the back tees" If you can't play the next tees up and shoot 70's everytime DON'T move back(unless your ego is real big)

J3sus, Chr1st, no, i"m not kent. Try to follow along.

I don't even play the tips unless I'm playing with Abb or PQ.

I don't care what tees you play. But, we werre talking about how we PLAYED last year, and when Abb is talking about shooting a bunch of 78's and 79's and he's doing it on a course that is 75.1/138, it means something completely different than someone shooting 78/79 on a course that is 71.1/123.

It just is. End of story. I don't care if you don't think so, or Eagle doesn't think so, or if the "math is hard".

You guys all have a line (eg. Bethpage vs EPP). . .you just seem to have drawn your line at a place where you go, "oh, after a certain point, breaking 80 is breaking 80. I don't care how long or difficult the course is." Usually that line is usually on the side of the distance you play.

I broke 80 about one time from the tips at Hobbits this year, but you shoot 76 all the time. You tell me who has the ego.

You Napoleon

You should rethink the effect that distance and course setup has on the difficulty of playing the game.

i don't think anyone is saying that the differential doesn't have validity when comparing rounds/difficulty of courses. but casually telling someone your score for the day doesn't require the differential to justify the level of quality of said score.

Let's put it this way.

The question posed to DT was "are you equally happy with both rounds?" The question Abb should have asked was "do you think you played equally well both rounds?"

OK, fine, he's equally happy with both rounds. That's DT. I can't argue with that.

Personally, I'm walking off the white tees at P-Tux like, "wow, I played like crap. I lost balls. I didn't make a putt. Fortunately it was playing so short because I was able to hit 4 iron off a bunch of tees and get the ball in good position and I reached every 5 and had wedges in on the par 3's." I'm NOT happy with that round.

And I'm walking off Waverly like, "man, I was pounding it. Didn't make any birdies and bogeyed 3 of those par 3's playing 180-230. DIdn't reach any 5's, but I'm pretty happy with that score."

I guess I'm the oddball.

Everyone arguing on here makes it sad.

are you kidding? this is the first great thread debate of 2017! we're gonna look back on this and think about city saying "everyone gets a trophy for breaking a non-existent scoring barrier because they didn't play from the tips!" and we'll laugh and laugh...

we need puppet to post a 'street fighter' meme and dagoose to post a 'let it go!' image and then we'll be finished with it.

Apparently, people really believe that PQ's 79 at Bethpage was pretty much the same as Bangas rounding the same 9 twice in a row and putting up a 79. Everybody gets a trophy!!!!

No one thinks they are "the same", we just dont give AF. I think some people are capable at looking at two great rounds and say hey you know what, two good friends shooting two great scores - and then moving on.

Its OK (I think) to enjoy an excellent round(s) of golf without the need to quantitatively compare the inner workings of each round to another. That's what your index is for. I can acknowledge how an index is calculated - and why - without the need to use its' invididual pieces in my personal enjoyment of someone's great round.

If DT shoots a great round at Oak Creek one day, I can just buy him a beer and enjoy it without saying "Well, I was going to enjoy this round, but you were 1.8 above Fabb's differential from yesterday, so its not as great".

I guess I'm the oddball.

Nowwwwww we're getting somewhere...

I shoot the same scores from 6500 to 7100 yds. Rocky Point from the tips is the same length as SPPC from the white tees. So should I be happier with the tips or the whites.

Personally I like to play from 6500 to 6800 yds. in my later years. Don't reach par 5's in two anymore and don't reach 460 yd. par 4's on a regular basis. But neither do almost all the rest of the guys on here. Just more enjoyable to play from a distance where I can score and be challenged. For me it is maintain and be consistent. Improvement, well that train let the station a few years ago. Differentials really don't give a Sh!t

I'm just going to accept that Abb and I are being trolled at this point.

Oddly enough the rest of us are thinking the same thing

Or not. Apparently, people really believe that PQ's 79 at Bethpage was pretty much the same as Bangas rounding the same 9 twice in a row and putting up a 79. Everybody gets a trophy!!!!

It was a 76. We played the blues on the second 9. And it was the Men's Championship so I did win a trophy.

Longest is Torrey South. But they pair that with Torrey north for the first 2 rounds, so 25% of the scoring comes on one THE shortest played on tour all year (#9 on the list.)

Shortest is Pebble, but they pair that with 2 others, so only 50% is played on that course. (But the other 2 are #3 & #4 on the list of shortest courses, so similar group.)

Longest with all 4 rounds on same course is at Quail Hollow.

Shortest with all 4 on same course is at Harbortowne. (Not counting Sony, but not everyone wants to go to Hawaii for a vanilla course…)

Let’s go to the numbers…

Torrey South-72. 7,698 yds, 78.2/144 Ave winning score over last 16 years (since renovations) is -13.25. Again, that’s with 1 round on one of the shortest on tour…

Pebble Beach-72. 6,816 yds, 75.5/145 Ave winning score over last 16 years (matching Torrey) is -16.125. And that’s with 2 rounds on short courses.

With that rating difference of 2.7 the winning scores should be around 8-10 shots lower (factoring other courses) over the 4 rounds...but it's less than 3.

Torrey and Pebble hosted US Opens close to one another, and Torrey’s winning score was -1 (2008) and Pebbles was Even (2010.) I know, there’s the “but wait, Tiger shot -12 at Pebble.” And…he won by 15 shots. Meaning NOONE ELSE was under par.

Harbortowne-71. 7,099 yds, 75.6/148 Ave winning score over last 16 years is -12.8.

Quail Hollow-72. 7,575 yds, 76.5/143 Ave winning score over last 14 years is -12.9.

Almost identical under par at the longer course (Quail Hollow) as to the shortest (Harbortowne.)

Just imagine if Eagle had posted his fake driving stats.

the current statistical differential between Fairways Hit and WEDs (well executed drives) sits at zero.

small sample size tho.

so what you're saying is... a player's score matters more than his differential?

is that right?

;)

p.s. on a somewhat serious note, that is some interesting info. i knew torrey was long (forgot about them playing the north course for a round). figured harbortown was the shortest. didn't know about pebble being that short, or quail hollow being that long.
