There aren't really any "hidden" gems in MB. Just about every course along the strand is pretty well known. Some would argue that there aren't many gems in MB, but that's a different story. :D One of the lesser known courses that is among the better courses in the northern area is Bald Head Island. It's not cheap, but it makes for a fun day. You need to take a ferry to the Island

It is about as "hidden" as you can get with that ferry ride. Definitely a unique experience, but I don't know if it would fit into the OP's sub-$100 range. It can be a pricey day after the tips and food/drink for the day. Definitely suggest that anyone in the area with a free day to golf should consider, very fun.

I would watch the monday after the masters will be i think at Barefoot.

My Hidden Gem would be Bald Head Island worth the trip up there to play it. It is a wicked good course.

Private though? or is there a way to get on?

We played the Big Cats last year, and ended with Sandpiper Bay which I really enjoyed.

Watch out at the Cats...can't tell you how many balls our group lost in rough just off the fairway. Rough about 3" tall ... can literally watch your ball roll gently off the fairway and never find your ball unless you step on it.

Shaftesbury Glen is my favorite track down there and not far from where you are.
Sorry, but I have to completely disagree here. I've played about 15 different MB courses and Shaftesbury is probably the one I am least likely to ever return to.

After 3 holes my partners and I turned to each other and all agreed "this course is awesome - maybe the best we've ever played down here." The conditions were perfect for an early spring trip and far superior to the other 3 courses we played that week.

But...

By hole 12 or 13 we were bored out of our minds. EVERY hole was essentially the same. Long straight holes with no trouble off the tee to an elevated green with bunkers flanking on either side. There was zero variety. The joke became "the course hired the architect to design one hole and then they built 18 of them."

Never once was there a decision to make on club selection. On 14 driving holes our group pulled driver on every one. (For comparison I played Glen Dornoch to prior day and I think I pulled 8 drivers, 5 3woods, & 1 7wood off the tee.) With the exception of the identical greenside bunkers, a hazard never came into play. It was so boring and monotonous we even passed on a free afternoon replay we had.

Pros
Conditioning
Good for wild bombers
Decent practice area

Cons
Mind numbing monotony

Have been to Myrtle a few times. I second Possum Trot for price. Carolina National and Rivers Edge are really nice in their own right. Heard many good things about Farmstead.

I can't suggest Bald Head Island. The scenery on the last two holes is nice. But, when I played it, the condition wasn't up to the price of the greens fees paid.

Big cats are nice. Leopard will kick your butt, tiger is the easy one out of the 4.

Agree 100%. The course is wide open, monotonous. As I recall, the greens are all very large, and relatively flat.

Dornoch is a good challenge. Heather Glen across the street is also good, I'd recommend the white and blue 9s (red is nice, but I feel is the weaker 9)

The final 3 holes at Glen Dornach are just tricked up hard. Not great at all.
Heather Glen is better, but Pearl beats them both.
Grande Dunes is a very good course.
Tidewater is OK.
