Interesting I look forward to seeing more pics. I just wish someone would take the Scottsdale Anser / CamiCo / 009 headshape and make a production putter for everyone that was around $300 especially with the amount of companies that have this or a similar shape (Ping, Titleist, Nike (that is Rory's putter), Byron, Machine, C&L, now Scratch etc). Byron's DH89 is IMO the closest to an 009 or perhaps we should say the 009 is closest to the DH89 as it came first. Anyway, it seems the Cameron marketing machine and artificially limiting the supply has also artificially kept the prices of this head shape higher. Below is one of my favorite comparison photos for all those that get bent out of shape when a Cameron is copied. Also please check out this interview with Scotty http://www.golfdigest.com/magazine/2006-01/myshot_gd0601?currentPage=1 = some nice quotes:

Is my Newport putter a takeoff on the Ping Anser? Of course it is. Is the American Classic similar to the Bulls Eye? Certainly. But is it wrong to take off on their original designs and try to make them better? Absolutely not. Schwinn didn't invent the bicycle, but I dare you to call the Grey Ghost model a knockoff. My approach to putter design is the same.

I don't believe the greatest minds in clubmaking today are any more innovative than the best minds of 40 years ago. Before Karsten Solheim came along, there were blade putters and mallet putters. I can't fathom what went through his mind when he created the Ping Anser putter, which was so radical for its time that players were self-conscious about trying it. Karsten has been gone for some time now, and I can only wonder what he would design today with current technology and materials, high-speed cameras and so on. Picking up where men like Karsten left off is a big challenge.

Thanks for the mention above and previously by others.

I don't think anyone has a problem with other makers creating "new bicycles." Or taking old designs where any patents have long expired and trying to make them better. Yes, most of us do that and its can be a great challenge, especially when the original was so good to begin with. We all try to bring our own twists, technologies and style to the party, and the consumer benefits with more options and choices.

But taking someone else's new ideas, designs and inventions, and incorporating them, "borrowing" or even being "inspired by" may not be so cool if they don't do it with permission, license, etc. where property rights are concerned. It would also be nice to give credit where credit is due to current peers that get borrowed from, not just one or two of the old masters that are well established and / or no longer with us.

I think the bicycle / Grey Ghost analogy is a little bit of a red herring or straw man. A more accurate analogy would be how would Schwinn feel if another competitor started making Grey Ghost copies? Or what if a small bicycle maker designed the Grey Ghost and Schwinn just made it known and popular with all their marketing prowess?

Congrats to the OP on a cool project, and to Ari, James and the Scratch team for taking on this project and overall subject in an open, if not gutsy manner. Hand making this iconic head shape definitely requires some mad skills to pull off properly. I'm a fan of James and his work, and look forward to seeing the next photos and end product.

Best,

-Dave

I thought this comment from Dave nailed it. SC has always paid tribute to the two old masters, he never said he created Anser or One. Nevertheless, anything outside those 2 masters' work is perceived as his original work. I would never think SC any less if he gave credits where they are due, but I guess whatever makes him sleep at night.

It's not even an exact replica. There are clear differences in the pictures. Not a copy.

The naked eye can detect enough differences in the original posted photos. Amazing work though!!

Being that it is mostly handmade it's expected. If a 009 head was put into a 3D scanner and the image programmed into a multi axis CNC milling machine, then it would be an exact replica, but that sort of defeats the intended purpose.

I was actually thinking about this thread just the other day. Would love to see some updates. Hopefully it didnt disappear because people call9ng it a ''copy''. Its done by hand, JI is a master builder but making an ''exact copy'' by hand is virtually impossible. Meaning all this ''law suit/copying Cameron is kinda laughable.I hope to see an update soon.
