Have you played your home state's "Bucket List" course

Ohio has a lot of bucket list courses in terms of Top 100 US courses. Widdling it down to just Columbus, I consider 4 of them the 'Big 4'. Those are the 4 courses which are top 100 US courses in the city. I have played 3 of the 4. They are:

Muirfield Village (Played a handful of times and used to Caddy there)
Scioto Country Club (Played once)
Double Eagle (Played twice)
The Golf Club (still on my bucket list)

Outside of Columbus I would still love to play Firestone South, Camargo Club and Inverness Club
I've also played Longaberger and Avalon Lakes which have/are ranked pretty high. Played The Quarry which was supposedly #2 best public, nah. Just has crazy elevation stuff going on, nothing special to me.

I think I have. Old Waverly has held a US Womens Open and I have played there 15 times or so. Annandale is where the PGA tournament is held and I have played there 3 times. And Fallen Oak is where our Sr. PGA event is held and I have played there quite a few times.

Our State am this year is at Dancing Rabbit which is a top 5 course. I have played the Old course (which is where the state am is) once but havent played the new 18. I can only think of a couple courses that I havent played that are great courses: CC of Jackson, Reunion CC, and Tunica National.
I played Fallen Oak while in Biloxi for a conference this past October. What a beautiful course and amazing experience. Can't wait to watch the Senior Event this March now.

Of golf.com's top public by state, I've played 4 of the top 15 in Illinois, and I plan on knocking a few more off the list this summer:
- Thunderhawk (Favorite)
- Pine Meadow
- Stonewall Orchard
- Highlands of Elgin

3 in Wisconsin:
- University Ridge
-The Brute
- Palmer at Geneva National

1 in Michigan:
-Tullymore

I'll be playing 3 more of the top 20 in Michigan (Greywalls, TimberStone, and Sweetgrass) in July.

Im in Florida, and have a few knocked off, but still have a few to go. Im in the business so Ive been pretty lucky. Played Sawgrass more times than I can remember and PGA National. I have a buddy who works for Trump so this spring before they close for the summer I am scheduled to play the Trump course in Palm Beach, Doral, and the big fish Seminole.

I live in MA. Top course is most likely The Country Club in Brookline. Got to play there in the fall of 2012 with my boss (member) and two co-workers. It was a beautiful day. I had three birdies in four holes on the front. It was my first round playing with a caddie, and I think it messed me up more than it helped. His idea of "fast" on the greens and mine were apparently different. I hit a great approach into the wind on 18 and had an 18-foot downhill birdie putt. He told me it was really fast, and I left it 3-4 feet short. It was a really memorable day.

Does driving by Medinah everyday count? I've only lived in Il for 6 years and haven't been out on any of the top courses yet. Was lucky enough to walk Medinah in '06 for the PGA and '12 for the Ryder. Did get to play Pniehurst #2 when I lived in NC but my abilities were pretty bad at the time so it's hard for me to say I "played" it.

CT here-

I've played all of the top public and private but nothing nationally known, other than maybe Yale, #1 rated collegiate course. I have played some of New York's best though: Bethpage Black, Winged Foot West, Sebonack, and Maidstone. I'm going to make it my mission to play National and Shinnecock this summer.

Another depressed Illinois guy here. It really sucks admitting that the land of cheese is better than us at not only football, but public golf as well. It's not even close. What is it, like 6 top 100 public tracks? And Sand Valley on its way! Anyway, back to Illinois bucket list. Growing up my bucket list course was Medinah, followed by Rich Harvest Farms(lived near by and would take the long way to most anywhere just so I could catch any glimpse of the holes). Eventually I played both, along with every top public track except The Glen Club, no desire to pay the price for that course. So my Bucket list course now is Chicago Golf Club. It's also top 5 bucket list in the US for me. I've played with 2 people who KNOW members but that's as close as I've gotten. We can always dream right?
One course I drove by on my way to French Lick this fall, was Canyata. Pulled up to the gate but it's so far from the actual course I couldn't see anything. Luckily for me there is google maps. And if you drive a few country blocks to the back side of the property you can catch a glimpse of a few holes. This course basically has no write ups anywhere. The place reminds me so much of Rich Harvest before the Solheim Cup. Family owned, uber private. Would love to talk to someone who's played it.

I have it easy in RI. Just two more to hit.

I've played Newport CC, Carnegie Abbey, Pt Judith, Sakonnet GC, and Shelter Harbor. Just have Quidnessett and RICC in Barrington to get on and my list is done.

Oh, there's also one other course that's closer to RI than NY, but it's on an island that is part of NY... Fishers Island. I've wanted to play tha course since I was young.

Lived in various areas of Ohio during my life and have been fortunate to play many/most of the courses people consider "highly ranked" or are ranked in various publications.

Cincinnati - Camargo
Columbus - Muirfield Village, The Golf Club, Double Eagle, O.S.U. Scarlett, Longaberger
Cleveland - Canterbury, The Country Club (Pepper Pike), Sand Ridge, Shaker Heights, Elyria
Dayton - N.C.R., Moraine
Akron/Canton - Brookside, Firestone South

Still haven't had an opportunity to play Inverness, Scioto, or Kirtland, but hope to at some point.

Of all these courses/clubs in Ohio, if I had a choice of where I could join or play every day, I would select either The Golf Club or Canterbury. I think both have the fun/playability factor, but can also present a significant challenge if I want to play a difficult golf course.

Have also played most of the highly regarded public courses. I completely agree with your assessment of The Quarry. I was greatly disappointed in that course considering how much ink it receives.

On another note, Fowlers Mill is severely underrated on the public side. In my opinion, it is hands-down the best public course in the state. If it were still private and/or maintained like a private course, it would likely crack the top 10 in Ohio. Its an early Pete Dye design, built about three years after he finished The Golf Club.

NYS here.

I've played Bethpage but that's not THE bucket list course in this state. That nod has to go to Shinnecock with National Golf Links of America in close pursuit. I have played neither.

Is National Golf Links the course that overlooks the Statue of Liberty? Doesn't one of the tours play a tournament there? I could swear I saw it on TV last year.

Given that the NewYork Giants play home games in Jersey, I suppose you should be given some slack, too!

Horseshoes and hand grenades...

But even if Liberty National was in NYS, it wouldn't even be close to making the list. Theres not much room behind Winged Foot, Oak Hill, Fishers Island, Sebonack, Friars Head, Maidstone....

Do you have a review of Cabot somewhere here? My brother and I were talking about taking a trip up.

While I've never been there I've talked to Keiser and people involved in Cabot and I've been told to wait for Cliffs if you can. Not to take anything away from Cabot Links, but Cliffs is supposed to blow it out of the water.

As for the bucket list.. Michigan here and I've played Oakland Hills (South), Pointe o' Woods and The Dunes Club.

I've been thinking about this and came to the realization that Arizona is so overrated when it comes to golf. We have a lot of good courses here but none that I would hope that'd be on someone's bucket list.

I see what you're saying... the golf is definitely unique and that's part of why it probably gets a pass most of the time. But there is some magnificent golf in AZ, it's just the majority of it is private. :russian_roulette:

I've been fortunate to play three of the better private clubs here in Arkansas. Pinnacle in Rogers hosts the Walmart NWA on the LPGA Tour. Hardscrabble in Fort Smith hosted the Web.com event for many years (Zach Johnson won one year.) I've also played Little Rock Country Club, a very nice older classic course with some views of the Arkansas River and downtown.

But The Alotian Club is now the premier course in Arkansas, and it isn't even close. I doubt I'll ever be able to play there. It was founded by Warren Stephens, whose family has long had ties to Augusta National. It hosted the Western Amateur last summer. Phil and Tiger have both done exhibitions there, benefiting The First Tee.

If you're from an area of the country with green, parkland style courses, the beauty of the desert courses is something unique. I would definitely put Dove Mountain and the two We Ko Pa courses on a bucket list. The courses are not lined with houses, and are truly desert courses with fantastic views.
