Who would try a 15 in. cup?

pkwilli1999

Personally I think it would be fun. Lots of long putts and a few chip ins? Sounds good to me!

What about you guys? Would you guys try it? Do you think they might soon share a green with a standard 4.5 in. cup?

Or does Mark King just have his head in the clouds?

I would worry about stepping in it and breaking my ankle -- However, my putting stats would certainly improve. Ten footers would be automatic!

Sergio and Justin Rose played 9 holes on Monday post Masters at a TM event kicking off the program. Sergio shot -6 but JR only -3.

It would be interesting to try it but that just seems like your odds of making a putt from any distance would increase factorially. If it gets more people to play the game, great...if it improves pace...great...not sure I'm going to feel better about the score I shot though.

Played in an event where half the holes were 5 lb coffee cans and the other half would barely fit a golf ball. (you had to get the ball out of the cup with a spoon)

The coffee can was weird. You didn't make as much as you thought. Ran some 35 footers well past because I thought I couldn't miss.

The smaller cup made me hit some great putts. Didn't make any but if the hole were regulation, some ocean-liners would have dropped.

I think it'd be fun to play a round like that, I certainly wouldn't want to play all the time with a 15" cup though.I still probably find a way to 3 putt during the round somehow.

Really, even my hacker friends are capable of two putting pretty much everything. It's the getting there in a decent amount of strokes which seems to be the killer for them. Plus putting is the one strong point of my game that is well above average. I'd be pretty pissed to be equalized to the rest of the field, just because they can't hit the ocean if they fall of the deck of their boat.

Why don't we make the High school rims 5 feet in diameter and bring the baseball fences into 200ft while we are at it???

Just a dumb idea...Hey we can give equal sized trophies to every finishing spot in pop warner too, first place gets the same as dead last...wait we already do that cr@p.

For all the purists. Yes, you can keep the current hole size and your handicap. But for some rounds I think it would be a blast. It was proven though that the people who gained the most from the oversize cup were the lower handicaps. If you are already on the green in 6 the larger cup ain't gonna prove anything. High handicaps chip and pitch to 20 feet and then still 2 putt to the 15" hole, the lower caps chipped and pitched much closer or in the hole and the 15" helped them alot.

It would definately speed up play. People spend WAY TOO much time on the greens trying to save a triple bogey from 8 feet into that tiny hole. For the casual round, not affecting precious handicaps, the 15" hole makes great sense. There is no reason to not play sometimes to a larger hole. We are not talking ALL the time.

I agree with TeeJay... its a dumb idea, least for actual 'golfers'. Add it onto clown and windmill golf and they might have something.

I understand why King is proposing this stuff, so that he can "grow the game" and sell more clubs. Fine.

But why should I care about growing the game? Golf's not going away anytime soon. Hell, if anything, if you eliminated 1/2 of the golfers out there it would be better for me and a lot of guys on here. Sure some courses might close and some planned developments might go under. But overcrowding and long rounds being a thing of the past? I personally would value that more than growth.

Golf is not for everyone, never has been. I guess it makes me a golf elitist, or even a golf a****** lol, i guess I am.

That said, I am for things that make the game more fun, and easier, within reason. Transparent sales driven behavior dressed up as altruism? That's what this sounds like to me.

I've played in a few 8in cup tournaments, and it's not as easy as it may seem.

The size of the hole causes you to be very aggressive and most of the time makes you have 10 footers coming back. Also, if you hit the lip the ball rolls much past the hole as it has a lot more time to build up speed on the lip, compared to a 3 in cup.

I agree 100%, but especially "golf is not for everyone". Also, I have no problems paying a bit more in green fee's to offset the loss of people and improve pace of play.

Making the cup 15" or such, is ludicrous though. Besides, hackers will struggle with that too, then want it even bigger. I am however, all for someone investing their money in a separate golf course setup with cups as large as they want and what ever else. I can say without a doubt, a number of colleagues that are dedicated golfers would no longer hold company tournaments at such a facility, that includes me.

In trying to keep my promise of not becoming a grumpy old man yelling at people to stay off my lawn, I'll say if be willing to give it a try.

Ultimately I'd still play most of my rounds on the traditional course/holes but I like to mix it up now and then.

The larger the cup, lower is the number of Putters being sold.

While we're at it, close all Golf courses and build more driving ranges with simulators on demand.

And this is why it works so nicely for King, as TM is not a big putter company, while his competitors Titleist, Ping and Callaway, are. Smart guy.

I would enjoy it. If anything, it'll speed up rounds because anything inside of 6 feet should be nearly impossible to miss. I don't think it will have that big of impact on scores though. A current hole has what, 2.125 inches on either side of center? A 15 inch hole will be 7.5 on either side, so just over 5 inches more "play" on any given side. I see a lot of people miss most of their longer putts by more than 5 inches either short or wide.

I know it's hard to believe, but it's what I've witnessed. They miss more 5-10 footers than I do for sure. But they miss to where their next putt is a tap-in, which takes what? An extra 15 seconds? I can only think of one friend who putted like the first iteration of Happy Gilmore, pre-Odyssey hockey stick putter. It's the arduous pre-shot routine followed by Duff Man (oh no, can't breathe) that kills any rhythm of the round.
