I can't find the list of shaft equivalents. I know it's been posted before. Sorry to ask the same question that's been asked many times.

What do s300 and kbs tour stiff match up with. 120x or 120S. 125 S or X. And the 130's. S?

Thanks. I know it's been posted before.

KBS Tour and S300 are different profiles.

For the S300, the 125S would be comparable.
For the KBS Tour Stiff, I would think the 130S, potentially soft stepped.

I find the 120 to be more comparable to the KBS C-Taper from a launch perspective, but with more spin.

Had the chance to demo the Modus 105 in a Ping i head.

I have gravitated (fr DG & KB Tour) to shafts that weigh about 115 gr, so I was not sure that I would get along with a sub-110 shaft. However, the 105 was very stable and gave me a strong - not ballooning - ball flight.

Went ahead and ordered them in my new Pings.

I think the 130 would be closer to the DG300. Certainly similar bulk and weight.

Far from it, 130 is counterbalanced with soft tip and high flight. DG is balanced weighted with stiff tip and low flight.

I can confirm this as well...moddus 130 launchs much higher than DG s300 and KBS tour.

I play the 130S and I think it is very similar to project x 6.5. Ball flight is high but it flattens out. 130S is quite stout definitely think about soft stepping if you are coming from kbs stiff or dg s300 they aren't even in the same ball park. Send Markheardjr a pm or look through this thread, he has a ton of information regarding the shafts and from my experience with the 120x and 130s he is spot on with his descriptions and advice.

Fair enough. I'm finding the 130 a long way from KBS Tour tho, for me they have the bulk and weight of a DG300 if not the profile. The 130 reminds me more of the KBS Tour V. I think the 1150 Tours are closer to KBS Tour.

Mark-

A while back you said this...
The only OEM specific shafts I have ever known or liked was the old Apex shafts in the Hogan Apex forged irons.

I've been playing 'old' Apex 4 in 1983 Hogan Personals and 'newer' Apex 4 in 1999 Apex. I've dabbled with DGS400 in the 2002 Nike blades. I hold the lag, take some DEEP divots and launch irons probably a bit too high.

Any recommendation on where to start with Nippon?

What didn't you like about the S400? That might help diagnose and make a better suggestion.

120X or 125S hard-stepped would be my recommendation. With the lag the 120X might not fit but if it does it could be exactly what you want. Stiffer mid and tip will help you as a digger and it was preferred by DG players prior to the 125 release. 125S in my mind is similar to an S400 but feels far smoother and spins less for me. 120X will launch lower a spin a touch more, 125S hard-stepped will launch mid-height with lower spin than 120X.

With the comment about height I'm on the fence. How is spin? If spin is not a problem, maybe 120X. If spin is an issue and you often balloon, maybe 125X soft-stepped even to help get launch and spin down.

@NipponShaft: Superb -8 1st round of 62 @WyndhamChamp for MODUS3 Tour 105 S flex player hitting 15 GIR. currently leading the way in 1st place. #PGATour

Meant to post that yesterday but if the Nippon Twitter account is to be believed (why would they not?), McGirt uses 105S??

Not judging, but that's one of the last shafts I'd expect someone like him to be using!

They are heavy and a bit muted feeling, dull maybe. If you want something a tad more lively and balanced the 125 Is just that. Good Luck.

One reason I went with SPB instead of looking for a set of 125's is that I rather like heavy shafts. Over the years, I've used a lot of 90g shafts in driver, and have even almost gone for a set of 7.0 Rifles back in the day (instead of DGX), after seeing something suggesting they may be close to 140g in the 5 iron.

That's my kind of party. :)

Mark, can you help out a bit?
I played the 1150 stiff all season till just recently picking up new set of irons with Kbs tour stiff....not really liking them, too much dispersion and left issues. Should I go back to the 1150's or how do you think the 105's would compare? Thanks in advance.

I'd say try 105's. If tour players can use 105S and get the dispersion and control they require you should be able to also. I agree with KBS, too spinny and dispersion was all over the place. Felt good, performed not-so-good.

Thanks Mark. Couple more things...I read somewhere last night where the 1150's are a "flighted" shaft & also that they are like a softer modus 125. Also this reviewer said the modus 105's where more like the 1050's. Can you comment on any of those or have your own comments on those comparisons?

Thanks again.

Another thought on this. I'm being reminded of one of the nice side effects of playing DGX, compared with some other shafts, that being the slightly greater vibration one feels on every shot.

Muted feeling Xstiff shafts wouldn't be a bad thing for that reason.

We'll see if I still feel that way later :)

Wow. What can I say. I put some modus3 120x in my gamers... Hit 15 greens yesterday and all 9 tonight. I cannot get over how tight the dispersion is compared to the KBS X. Trajectory a tad lower and straight up and down. I remember turning away in frustration on a 195 yard par 3 because I thought I over cooked it left and the ball just held its line.... Right over top of flag stick. These things are serious. Will have to change wedges now too. Impressive. Highly recommended.

Second Demo time with the Pro Modus 105 S yesterday in the Ping i #7 Demo.

I really can't speak highly enough about this shaft. I know it's light, but in spite of that, the weight belies any normal issues some golfers may find with a lighter shaft. I don't know how Nippon do it, but they really have made a package that in spite of its weight, wants to help the ball to elevate quickly, but just hold it's line. It's neither a harsh shaft or indeed, soft to flex. It can hold enough energy in transition without feeling 'lost', and yet stores that energy so effortlessly until you need it, and it does it in a quiet way. No big kick, no drama at impact, just lets go at the right time.

If anyone is worried about overpowering this shaft, don't worry. Go try it if you can, most will not be disappointed I'm sure.

I just hope more OEM's will consider adding this option to their Custom shaft ranges for any new imminent Iron releases they may have coming through.

    • Titleist GT drivers - 2024 the Memorial Tournament
Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
