Blade users thread (NO DEBATING CLUBHEADS! NO Buy Sell Trade!)

At my home course, they've been crazy busy. In spite of not being allowed to have people sitting inside during the month, the food and beverage area had the best month of May they've ever had, in terms of sales. All this with very little "post round beverages and chatter" activity, and also without any of the big scramble events, which haven't been allowed yet.

We're also seeing players who normally visit a course once a year at the absolute most, based on conversations I've overhead around the putting green. Tee sheets are pretty busy.

We never had a full^on lockdown here, but a lot of stores and factories shut, which brought out the golfers. I went for nine holes with my daughter a month or so ago, and bumped into a bloke I've played with before who runs a nearby factory. He was about to tee off with some other people, but he said he had so much time on his hands now he was playing golf almost every day, and if I was looking for a game I should give him a call. I think there are a lot of people in that situation. Work is fairly slack, so they head off to the golf course.

Portland's courses have stayed fairly busy. I have not seen a change in the overall amount of play here. In fact when Washington courses were all closed over a month ago it was busier than ever in Portland. But now it's usual busy summer golf.

+1 for the apex grinds! Picked up a great set 3-pw for $50 earlier this year. They're basically indistinguishable from my set of Redlines in feel and launch, and they play great in soft Florida turf. Very underrated--just keep in mind the sweet spot is a tad closer to the shaft.

My current Apex MBs are very close in spirit to the Redlines and Grinds. A little bit softer in feel, which I like, and you can see/feel the Hogan DNA.

Took my ApexMB for their first outing yesterday, quick 9 holes after work, and I'm in love. I know this could be a the honeymoon period setting in but man I was impressed... I didn't think they could improve on the Protos but I reckon they have with these. I caught a 7 iron a bit low on the face and the feedback was instant but not harsh (even with the CTaper 130x in hand) the ball still flew on a nice flight and carried further than I thought it would. Ended up shooting 1 over for the 9.

Playing 18 on Sunday so I will get a better idea of what I'm dealing with then.

The Apex MB’s are such a great set of irons, for me one of the best if not the best feeling irons on the market. Almost ended up with a set myself

Shot like crap today. Let's just say it was in the 90s. I'm blaming a really sore right hand from two days of pistol shooting, which I'm new to, beforehand. But on a good note I still hit some good shots and played with fellow WRXers spud3 and WishIPlayedMore.

And muahahahaha I am slowly converting WishIPlayedMore to full blades. About a month ago I told him he'd kick a$$ with my Retro TBs but he said he didn't have the game. LOL I'm the absolute last person to ever say that to. So today I challenged him that he would play fine with my Retros and let him use them for the round. And by the end of it I asked him what he thought of them and he said he loved them. LOL I wasn't surprised. He also asked me how much I want for them, so now I'm doing my homework on the pricing. I never thought I'd sell my 'Dirty Girls' but they simply don't make it into the rotation with my two BB sets. What do you all think, should I let go of these babes?

I would not know, but my personal comfort on "nice" purchases hover around $350-$500.

I don't think I could go that low for that set. It's got Rifle 5.0s and GripMasters on it plus the condition is just barely used.

I completely understand that sentiment. I'm just pointing out as a blade ho where I come from. I could see those fetching more say $750 or so but buyer has to want them. Fair or not, some blades command more than they deserve and some less, they are Miura's (big plus) but not BB's. I paid thru the nose for VR Pro's & Titleist T's, were they worth it? No. But I can easily unload them, yet some of my better buys I probably cannot. Ebay under sold/completed listings is pretty solid gauge on what you might expect.

New irons, especially blades can be quite costly, the floor is now what $1300 (full set) & may go over $2K on high end, so yeah, I might be too low minded, but a few years ago there were mint blades floating about for $350. I don't see that so much these days, but then again I'm not really looking either. But when I go in GG and put irons in my hands and see price, I feel better about all the hoeing.

Your perspective helps and thanks! I just settled on a number with my buddy. Giving him a great deal and it covers most of the cost I paid. Plus he could probably flip them and make some profit. But I don't care and he's a buddy. He just picked them up and is giving them a trial at the range today.

LOL I hear ya. I love that set but I seriously don't ever play it and it's shorter than both my BBs. My buddy would put it to good use and thoroughly enjoy it like it's supposed to be enjoyed. It's literally collected dust for the last three years.

LOL in less than two hours at the range with them he bought 'em. He's coming from Cobra MBs that have those inserts, so the Miura steel feel is unreal to him. I'll miss those babes ? but since we play all the time I'll still see them. ?

LOL no way. He's got more game than me so I don't want to level the playing field that much. My BBs are my handicap and competitive edge against him. I'm just going to keep encouraging him to enjoy those Retros. ?

The FG-17s are such a good design. I love their curved top of muscle shape and very simple flat sole design. I put them up there with the FG-59s as far as the finest W/S blades.

I spent a little more than that (about $100 including shipping) to get my almost-FG-17s (think they're a Japanese market model, but essentially the same). One of my favourite sets of irons I own, and I've got quite a lot of sets.

How are you finding the 130X C-tapers? Sounds like you're getting on fine with them.

Absolutely no problem, I was nervous on the first round but I haven't had any issues. Even the tired swings are no issue, still getting great distance out of them. I actually think I've picked up a few metres.

I think the main difference with the heavier shaft is that I don't try and hit the ball from the top of my backswing anymore, the added stiffness lets me release the clubhead with no fear.
